Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery provides rapid publication of new and cutting-edge techniques and research in phototherapy, low level laser therapy (LLLT), and laser medicine and surgery.
Book reviews are published as space permits.
EXCLUSIVE PUBLICATION
Manuscripts should be submitted with the understanding that they have neither been published, nor are under consideration for publication elsewhere, except in the form of an abstract. Prior abstract publications should be described in the form of a footnote to the title. Published manuscripts become the sole property of the Journal and will be copyrighted by Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. By submitting a manuscript to the Journal, the author(s) agree(s) to each of these conditions. In addition, the author(s) explicitly assign(s) any copyrighted ownership he/she (they) may have in such manuscript to the Journal.
USE OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE
All submissions must be in English. Appropriate use of the English language is a requirement for review and publication in Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery. For authors whose native language is not English, we suggest using a service that can aid in the translation and rewriting of material into correct and proper English usage. NOTE: Plagiarism Detection
All accepted manuscripts will be processed through plagiarism detection software, and any notice of acceptance is considered conditional, pending the review and verification of the plagiarism detection report. If the report detects a high incidence of overlap in text, the Editor-in-Chief reserves the right to rescind the decision to accept the paper.
Text “Recycling”
Text recycling may be discovered in a submitted manuscript by editors and/or reviewers, or by the use of plagiarism-detection software. If any discovered overlap is considered minor, action may not be necessary, or the authors may be asked to rewrite the overlapping sections and cite their previous article(s) if they have not already done so.
More significant overlap may result in immediate rejection, or rescinding of a decision to accept.

We endorse the “Uniform Requirements of Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals.”
Prepare manuscripts double spaced throughout. Please submit text of manuscripts in Microsoft Word. The title page should include the title of the manuscript, all authors’ names and complete affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), and a running title of about 45 characters. The corresponding author should also be designated on the title page. The second page should consist of a structured abstract of no more than 250 words which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. The structured format for the abstract consists of 1) the objective of one or two sentences; 2) the background data is a short paragraph describing the present status of the field; 3) methods is a statement of the plan and/or methods used in the study; 4) the results is a concise summary of the essential features verified by the data; and 5) the conclusions is a brief description of the objective findings of the study. References are not permitted in the abstract.
Manuscripts should follow this format: abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, conclusion and summary, acknowledgments, author disclosure(s), and a complete list of cited references, prepared in the proper journal style (see http://endnote.com/downloads/style/photomedicine-and-laser-surgery). Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed. Authors are encouraged to suggest the names of appropriate reviewers.
GUIDELINES ON LENGTH
Manuscript length varies according to the type of paper, subject matter and authors' judgment. Original research papers are generally less than 3000 words; review papers may be longer (up to 6000 words and should have a 150-word abstract); only rare, novel, or exceptional Case Reports of up to 1500 words will be considered; Short Reports should be less than 1000 words with no more than one table or illustration and up to 10 references. We are happy to entertain unsolicited editorials of up to 1000 words, which will be externally peer reviewed. Letters to the Editor should be no longer than 500 words with no more than 5 references except in exceptional circumstances when the argument for this should be laid out in an accompanying letter. One table or illustration may accompany letters. Personal view papers, drug/therapy/intervention reports, critical review and debate and reports drawing attention to potential clinical problems are welcomed.
PARAMETERS
All submitted manuscripts must include a detailed description of the treatment (light or energy delivery) as well as the device used in performing such treatment (light or energy delivery). A description of the device must include the name of the manufacturer, the manufacturer’s geographical location, the equipment model, power output, the wavelength of the light source, including a description of the source, e.g., solid state, gas, laser diode, light-emitting diode, etc., and the shape, size and type of treatment applicator (delivery system or device) used in delivering treatment. Similarly, a detailed description of treatment parameters is necessary; and should at minimum include:
- The irradiance or power density measured in W/cm2,
- The dose in the form of energy density or fluence measured in J/cm2,
- The duration of each treatment session, preferably measured in seconds,
- The frequency of treatment (i.e., the number of times treatment was done
per week), and
- The cumulative dose given, i.e., the individual doses multiplied by the number of treatment sessions.
It is highly recommended that the parameters used be provided in the form of a table in addition to their inclusion in the text of the Materials and Methods section of the manuscript.

TABLES
Tables should be submitted in Microsoft Word and provided in one separate file from the main text of the manuscript. Tables should be cited in the text in order and identified as Table 1, Table 2, etc. Along with the table number, each table should have a title.
FIGURES
Please follow these instructions for submitting illustrations:
• Do not embed figures in the Microsoft Word text files.
• Do not prepare any figures in Microsoft Word.
• Prepare figures in either .tiff or .eps format.
• Line illustrations must be submitted at 900 DPI.
• Black and white halftones and color art must be submitted at 300 DPI.
• PowerPoint and Excel files cannot be uploaded.
• Color art must be saved as CMYK—not RGB.
• Please name your artwork files with the submitting author’s name, followed by the
figure number (e.g., SmithFig1).

FIGURE LEGENDS
Legends for illustrations with numbers corresponding to the figures should be uploaded as a separate file.
ABBREVIATIONS
Abbreviations of journal titles should follow the style of Medline or the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual (Arlington, VA, American Institute of Biological Sciences). The first time an uncommon abbreviation appears, it should be preceded by the full name for which it stands.
DISCLOSURE STATEMENT
Immediately following the Acknowledgments section, include a section entitled “Author Disclosure Statement.” In this portion of the paper, authors must disclose any commercial associations that might create a conflict of interest in connection with submitted manuscripts. This statement should include appropriate information for EACH author, thereby representing that competing financial interests of all authors have been appropriately disclosed according to the policy of the Journal. It is important that all conflicts of interest, whether they are actual or potential, be disclosed. This information will remain confidential while the paper is being reviewed and will not influence the editorial decision. Please see the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals at http://www.icmje.org for further guidance. If no conflicts exist, the authors must state “No competing financial interests exist."
REFERENCES
The reference section must be typed double spaced and references cited within text should be numbered consecutively as they appear. Those appearing for the first time in tables and figures must be numbered in sequence with those cited in the text where the table or figure is mentioned. All numbered in-text citations should be superscript with no parentheses. List all the authors when there are six or fewer. When there are seven or more, list the first three, then “et al.” Sample references are:

References to government publications should include the department, bureau or office, title, location of publisher, publisher, year, pages cited, and most important, the publication series, report, or monograph number.
Numbered references to personal communications, unpublished data and manuscripts either “in preparation” or “submitted for publications” are unacceptable. If essential, such material may be incorporated in the appropriate place in the text.

Upon acceptance of any manuscript processed through Manuscript Central, all authors will receive a follow-up email with instructions on completing our online Copyright Agreement form. Each author will receive individualized links to their copyright form. Authors will not be permitted to “share” or forward these individualized links as they are unique to each author. Therefore, it is critical to ensure the accuracy of ALL authors’ email addresses when uploading submissions to ensure the proper delivery of each copyright form, and any other pertinent email communications.

CORRESPONDING AUTHORSHIP
It is the Journal’s policy that a manuscript has only ONE corresponding author listed on a paper. This designation should be determined at the time of submission. Additions to corresponding authors are not permitted after acceptance or in page proofs.
PATIENT RELEASE INFORMATION
If applicable, it is incumbent upon the author(s) to obtain patient release statements of permission to reproduce any identifiable images of patients. The submitting author should provide written confirmation of this critical information. Acceptable forms of consent statements are emails or letters. The Journal does not provide a generic patient release form.
The written consent must contain specific information about the patient's name, age, and if pertinent, conservatorship -- as well as stated permission -- granting the Journal the rights to publish the photograph within its pages (which includes the name of the Journal and article title).
PERMISSIONS
Materials taken from other sources must be accompanied by a written statement from both author and publisher giving permission for reproduction. If clearances are required by the author’s institution, statements concerning such clearance should be provided in the manuscript. Obtain and submit written permission from authors to cite unpublished data or papers still in press.
PAGE PROOFS
Page proofs will be sent to the (one) corresponding author as designated when the manuscript was uploaded to Manuscript Central. It is the corresponding author’s responsibility to share the page proofs with co-authors and to coordinate all authors’ corrections into one proof. The Publisher will not accept corrections from multiple authors.
