About the journal

A fully open access, multi- and interdisciplinary journal, npj Systems Biology and Applicationsis dedicated to publishing the highest quality papers on systems biology.

Aims & Scope

npj Systems Biology and Applications is an online Open Access journal dedicated to publishing the premier research that takes a systems-oriented approach. The journal aims to provide a forum for the presentation of articles that help define this nascent field, as well as those that apply the advances to wider fields. We encourage studies that integrate, or aid the integration of, data, analyses and insight from molecules to organisms and broader systems. Important areas of interest include not only fundamental biological systems and drug discovery, but also applications to health, medical practice and implementation, big data, biotechnology, food science, human behaviour, broader biological systems and industrial applications of systems biology.

We encourage all approaches, including network biology, application of control theory to biological systems, computational modelling and analysis, comprehensive and/or high-content measurements, theoretical, analytical and computational studies of system-level properties of biological systems and computational/software/data platforms enabling such studies.

Instructions to Authors

This section will help you when preparing your manuscript for initial submission and resubmission to npj Systems Biology and Applications. Please ensure that you familiarise yourself with our editorial policies as outlined in our Guide for Authors before submitting your work. An overview of key information on submitting primary research is also available in our brief guide to manuscript submission in PDF format.

For information on our aims and scope, as well as our content types, please refer to the About the journal section.

How to submit

All manuscripts must be submitted electronically through our online submission system, from which you can upload the cover letter and manuscript files (text, figures and supplementary information, including video) and check on the status of your manuscripts during the review process.

Revised manuscripts should be uploaded through the link provided in the editor's decision letter. Please do not submit revisions as new manuscripts.

The authors must include copies of all related manuscripts with any overlap in authorship that are under consideration or in press elsewhere.

Guide for Authors

View our guide for authors for detailed information on editorial criteria, and how manuscripts are handled by our editors between submission and acceptance for publication.

Manuscripts submitted to npj Systems Biology and Applications do not need to adhere to our formatting requirements at the point of initial submission; formatting requirements only apply at the time of acceptance.

Editorial Board

Editor-in-Chief

Hiroaki Kitano, PhD
President, Systems Biology Institute and Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc
Tokyo, Japan

Hiroaki Kitano is the President of the SBI; he is also President & CEO of Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc, Principal Investigator of the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST) and Group Director at the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences. He is an expert in the fields of artificial intelligence and bioinformatics and is a leading figure in the emerging field of gene network modeling.

Associate Editors

Reka Albert, PhD
Distinguished Professor of Physics and Biology
Pennsylvania State University
PA, USA

Reka Albert is a Distinguished Professor of Physics and Biology at the Pennsylvania State University. Her research has two main thrusts: collaborating with experimental groups to develop predictive dynamic models of biological systems at various levels of organization and developing network-based dynamical methodologies to drive biological systems to beneficial attractors (phenotypes).

Stefan Hohmann, PhD
Head of Department of Biology and Biological Engineering
University of Gothenburg
Gothenburg, Sweden

Stefan Hohmann is the head of the Department of Biology and Biological Engineering, and professor at the Division of Systems Biology, Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden. His group has been studying signal transduction and stress responses employing quantitative experimentation and mathematical modeling in collaboration with theoreticians. In particular the team focuses on mechanisms that control the dynamic profiles of signaling activity and the underlying design principles. Yeast is the experimental model organism. Mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways, in particular the osmostress-controlled HOG pathway, and the AMP-activated protein kinase pathways are main topics.

Edda Klipp, PhD
Professor, Theoretical Biophysics
Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin
Berlin, Germany

Edda Klipp has been full professor of Theoretical Biophysics at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin since 2008. Edda carries out multi-disciplinary research projects to understand cellular organization, dynamics of cellular processes and stress response. Her group has long-standing experience in computational systems biology with focus on dynamic modeling of regulatory processes including signaling, cell cycle, metabolism, transcriptional regulation and growth control. Methods comprise dynamic modeling with ODE systems, dynamic systems theory, parameter estimation, sensitivity analysis and SBML models as well as spatial modeling and discrete network modeling.

Jun Seita, MD, PhD
Team Leader
RIKEN Medical Sciences Innovation Hub Program
Tokyo, Japan

Jun Seita is a Team Leader at the RIKEN Medical Sciences Innovation Hub Program. His team has been studying deep learning on health and medical data, and systems approach for developmental and stem cell biology at a single cell resolution.
