Instructions to Authors

OPEN ACCESS OPTION FOR AUTHORS See here for details of our Open Access method of publication.

Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence to publish form.

Please note that by submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. If your article is accepted for publication OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process. Please note that OUP does not retain copies of rejected articles

EDITORIAL POLICY

Philosophia Mathematica is a refereed journal that sets out to disseminate new work in the philosophy of pure and applied mathematics including computing, and, by doing so, to be a means of promoting world-wide scholarly discussion. The language of the journal is English.

A manuscript submitted to Philosophia Mathematica as an article should present a position that is explicitly related within the text to the historical background of issues or present some issue in a new light. The paramount criteria for acceptance will be intellectual value and interest, preferably to more than one of its constituencies. Organization, clarity, and literateness will also be evaluated. If possible, suggestions for improvement will be made.

The objective is to publish material that scholars will want to read and respond to, not merely to create an archive for librarians to file. To that end, letters are encouraged. In addition, responses to published material, longer than what one would call a letter but not necessarily as ambitious as an article may be submitted for publication as notes.

SUBMISSIONS

Submissions -- both full papers and discussion notes -- on topics of special issues, past, present, and future, are especially welcome. They should be sent to:

Professor Robert Thomas

Department of Mathematics

University of Manitoba

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Canada R3T 2N2

E-mail: Robert_Thomas@Umanitoba.CA

E-mail submissions are preferred and all but universal. Submission implies that the paper has not been published and is not under consideration elsewhere and that all named authors approve of submission.

Anonymous manuscripts must be of good quality and double-spaced (including footnotes). An abstract (maximum 100 words) and an organized list of references should also be double-spaced at the end.

Literature references in the form 'Jones [1991]' are preferred to the less memorable '[5]'. Text must be reproducible in T E X (references using the natbib package). All else must be supplied in publishable form with location in the text clearly indicated. Authors should retain originals of non-textual material and a copy of the text, as submissions will not be returned.

Funding information

Details of all funding sources for the work in question should be given in a separate section entitled 'Funding'. This should appear before the 'Acknowledgements' section.

The following rules should be followed:

  • The sentence should begin: ‘This work was supported by …’
  • The full official funding agency name should be given, i.e. ‘National Institutes of Health’, not ‘NIH’ (full RIN-approved list of UK funding agencies) Grant numbers should be given in brackets as follows: ‘[grant number xxxx]’
  • Multiple grant numbers should be separated by a comma as follows: ‘[grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]’
  • Agencies should be separated by a semi-colon (plus ‘and’ before the last funding agency)
  • Where individuals need to be specified for certain sources of funding the following text should be added after the relevant agency or grant number 'to [author initials]'.

An example is given here: ‘This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health [AA123456 to C.S., BB765432 to M.H.]; and the Alcohol & Education Research Council [hfygr667789].

Having granted an exclusive licence, authors may use their own material in publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance. In consideration of this provision, the publisher supplies the author with free online access to their article, including a pdf copy. It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to reproduce verbal or visual material from copyright sources.

Philosophia Mathematica authors have the option to publish their paper under theOxford Open initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication.
