About the journal

Nature Reviews Materials is an online-only journal for the weekly publication of Reviews, Perspectives and Comments in all scientific disciplines within materials science.

Our Reviews aim to be balanced and objective analyses of the selected topic - with descriptions of relevant scientific literature and discussions that are easy to grasp for recent graduates in any materials-science related discipline, as well as informing principal investigators and industry-based research scientists of the latest advances. Reviews should provide the authors' insight into future directions and their opinion of the major challenges faced by researchers in the field.

Perspectives - as the name suggests - take a look at a topic from a slightly different perspective. They may offer more personal viewpoints, explain the historical background to a topic, or discuss some of the social, ethical or environmental factors related to materials science research in academia and industry.

Our Comments aim to address topical issues in materials science or offer a short, authorative opinion on a scientific area within materials science.

Reviews, Perspectives and Comments are commissioned by the editorial team.

About the Editors

Chief Editor: Alison Stoddart

Alison received her MSci in chemistry from the University of Cambridge, UK, before undertaking a PhD in the area of dendrimer synthesis with Professor Jim Feast at the Centre of Polymer Science & Technology, in Durham, UK. After an industrial position at Cambridge BioTechnology, she gained three years' editorial experience with the research journal Chemical Communications. In 2007, she joined the Nature Materials team as an Associate Editor and then Senior Editor, where she handled manuscripts in the subject areas of materials chemistry and biomaterials. She is the launch editor of Nature Reviews Materials.

Senior Editor: Giulia Pacchioni

Giulia received her Master’s degree in physics from the University of Milan, Italy, in 2011, with a thesis on the implantation of metal clusters in electroluminescent polymers for use in OLED devices. She then completed her PhD studies on the investigation of nanostructures on surfaces using scanning tunnelling microscopy in the group of Professor Harald Brune at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. Giulia joined Springer Nature in October 2015 for the launch of Nature Reviews Materials.

Associate Editor: Christine-Maria Horejs

Christine received her MSci and PhD in nanobiotechnology from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria, studying protein conformations and self-assembly using both biophysical and theoretical approaches. She then joined the lab of Molly Stevens at Imperial College London, UK, investigating the extracellular matrix and cell–material interactions. In 2015, she moved to Karolinska Institute, Sweden, conducting in vivo studies of anti-fibrotic biomaterials. In September 2017, she joined the Nature Reviews Materials team as an Associate Editor.

Associate Editor: Claire Ashworth

Claire received her MSci degree in chemistry from Imperial College London. She subsequently completed her PhD studies at Imperial, focusing on the application of computational methods for understanding molecular-level interactions and structuring within ionic liquids and related systems. Claire joined Nature Reviews in 2016 as a Copy Editor for the physical sciences. In November 2017, she joined Nature Reviews Materials as an Associate Editor.
