About the Journal
ACS Infectious Diseases is the first journal to highlight chemistry and its role in the multidisciplinary and collaborative field of infectious disease research. The scope of the journal encompasses all aspects of chemistry relating to infectious diseases research including research on pathogens, host-pathogen interactions, therapeutics, diagnostics, vaccines, drug-delivery systems, and other biomedical technology development pertaining to infectious diseases.
With editors well-versed in both chemistry and the biology of infectious diseases, the journal aims to bridge the gap between these two disciplines. ACS Infectious Diseases welcomes submission of articles with a balance of chemistry and biology, and encourages discussions centered on specific pathogen- and disease-related issues.
Journal Scope
Topics covered by the journal include but are not limited to the following:
Pathogens and Host-Pathogen Interactions
- Use of structural biology, chemical biology, glycobiology, physical chemistry, nucleic acid chemistry, and biochemistry to elucidate molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis
- Development of tools to dissect mechanisms of pathogenesis
Therapeutics
- Use of target-, phenotypic-, or computational-based approaches for discovery and development of new agents to treat infectious diseases, with an emphasis on establishing mechanism of action, understanding binding mode and inhibitory mechanism, and/or discussing pathogen-specific challenges to drug development
- Development of new technologies to facilitate characterization, validation, and prioritization of potential drug targets or to assess the physicochemical bases for cellular penetration of anti-infectives
- Mechanistic investigations of antimicrobial resistance
Vaccines
- Discovery and development of synthetic vaccines and small molecule vaccine adjuvants
- Structural, physical, or computational investigations of epitope binding
Diagnostics
- Development of novel and improved diagnostics using physical, surface, analytical, and nano chemistry techniques
- Use of structural biology, molecular biology, and chemical biology to investigate diagnostics targets
Drug Delivery Systems
- Use of novel materials and technologies, such as nanotechnologies, for delivery of antimicrobial agents
Instructions to Authors
Overview
Manuscripts and supporting information must be submitted through the ACS Paragon Plus Environment. Please review the Author Guidelines [PDF] before beginning your manuscript submission.
This journal does not require the use of a manuscript template and does not provide journal-specific templates. For any type of submission, the author should prepare the manuscript as a double-spaced electronic file.
Important Note: ACS Infectious Diseases requests that authors provide a short (~150 word) lay-summary (at the level of an undergraduate in biochemistry) describing the significance of the study for a broad audience. This lay summary should be included in the cover letter. It will be used to promote your research article through press communications.
Table of Contents (TOC) Art and Other Specifications
TOC art is a vital part of your manuscript submission; without it the publication of your manuscript will be delayed. TOC art should reflect the content and is a visual abstract designed to inform readers of the content and invite them to take a closer look. A guide to TOC art has been produced and is available here [PDF].
See also How to Submit a Manuscript for complete information on acceptable software, preparing and submitting manuscripts using TeX/LaTeX, correct preparation of graphics, etc.
Manuscript Transfer Service
Sometimes an ACS journal editor finds that a submitted manuscript is more suitable for a different ACS journal. The Manuscript Transfer Service allows the author(s) to transfer the manuscript and submission details to another ACS journal without restarting the entire submission process. See complete description.
