The Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines (CJNM, ISSN1672-3651) was founded in May 2003, and is sponsored by China Pharmaceutical University and the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association. Published bimonthly by Science Press, CJNM is devoted to communications among pharmaceutical and medicinal scientists who are interested in the advancement of the science of natural medicines, in particular, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The international web edition of CJNM (ISSN 1875-5364) is published by Elsevier. CJNM aims to cover a broad spectrum of original research papers and review articles in natural medicines or their products, including TCM. All of the articles of CJNM are written in English. The journal is currently being indexed by: SCIE, MEDLINE, BIOSIS Previews, BIOSIS Toxicology, CAB Abstracts, EMBASE, EMBASE Alert, Global Health, IPA, IPA Toxicology, SCOPUS, SciFinder Scholoar, ScienceDirect, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts, Elsevier Bibliographic Databases, Excerpta Medica, and Index Copernicus. CJNM is indexed in the Chinese Science Citation Database (CSCD).
CJNM was honored as one of the Outstanding S&T Journals of China in 2011 by the Ministry of Science and Technology, PRC. CJNM was evaluated as one of the prestigious journals (2011-2012) by Research Center for China Science Evaluation (RCCSE), and ranked 3rd in the field of pharmacy.

Basic Rules for a Publication in CJNM
Manuscripts will not be considered for publication in CJNM unless the following conditions, as applicable, are fulfilled:
1. Ethical considerations: Manuscripts are accepted for consideration with the understanding that they have not been published, or are under consideration for publication, anywhere else. Authors investigating the chemistry of a single species should aim to publish their results in a single manuscript rather than in a series of papers. Manuscripts should not report fragmentary parts of a larger study. Papers that have been presented as proceedings at scientific meetings are acceptable. Ethical standards with respect to the acquisition of the material studied, chemo- and bio-hazards, and animal and human subject testing must be followed. Evidence of assurance to ethical standards may presented by the authors or be required by the Editor-in-Chief.
2. Plant material (as well as other organisms) must be properly identified. The scientific name (in italics) of the organism, the author of this name and the family must be given. It should be indicated who identified the material used in the study and their affiliation. The manuscript must include references to voucher specimens of the plants (deposited in a major regional herbarium) or the material examined.
3. Isolation of compounds: Extraction and isolation should be described in detail. The type and amount of material, solvents and extraction methods must be indicated. The description of chromatographic systems should contain the quantitative information that allows the reader to repeat the work. Column dimensions, elution volumes, fraction sizes, yields of all isolates, etc. should be reported.
5. Biological and pharmacological investigations: CJNM will only consider manuscripts in which the conclusions are based on adequate statistics. In each case, positive controls (reference compounds) should be used and the dose/activity dependence should be shown. When working with experimental animals, reference must be made to principles of laboratory animal care or similar regulations, and to specific approval by the local ethical committee. The approval number and the corresponding date must be provided.
6. Biological screening: Papers dealing with the biological screening of a meaningful number of extracts of plants or other organisms can be considered for publication in CJNM. Identification of the materials tested must be properly documented, and preparation of the extracts must be clearly described. Biological activities should be reported by listing IC50, or at least a dose-response relationship should be shown by using at least two test concentrations. Positive controls (reference compounds) must be included for all biological studies.
7. Analytical studies: Key data on method validation must be provided and should typically include information on specificity, linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, accuracy, precision, intermediate precision, and some robustness studies. Information on the purity of reference compounds, and on the methods used for the determination of purity must be given. Recoveries of extraction and sample pre-purification steps must be indicated. Adequate statistical treatment of data is required. Analytical studies of a routine nature will not be considered for publication.
8. Clinical studies must be designed, implemented and analyzed in a manner to meet current standards of randomized controlled trials. Reference must be made to approval of the study by the local ethical committee for human subject research. The approval number and the corresponding dates of the approved trial must be provided.
LANGUAGE AND CONTENTS
1. Language
English is the language for all manuscript submissions. Manuscripts prepared in English may be accompanied by a Chinese abstract, but it is not a requirement. If English is not the first language, it is author’s responsibility to enlist the help of an English-speaking colleague for the correct use of the language in the whole article, including the title and abstract, before submitting the manuscript.
2. Contents
Manuscripts must be prepared using Microsoft Word for easy re-formatting and modification, and contain the following sections: Title, Authors, Keywords, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, and References.
The first page must contain: manuscript title, author(s) name and affiliation. The name, full postal address and e-mail address of the corresponding author should be clearly indicated.
1) Title: The Title should describe the content of the article clearly and precisely. The use of expressions with little information, such as ‘A study of’, ‘Investigations of’, ‘Observations on’ and abbreviations should be avoided.
2) Authors: The full name(s) of the author(s) should be provided. Only those scientists who have made an intellectual contribution to the work should be included in the author list. All authors must approve the final version of the manuscript. The corresponding author should be indicated with an asterisk.
3) Abstract: The Abstract should summarize the rationale, methods, main results and conclusions of the studies. The abstract should NOT include references to figures, tables, equations, or any other material in the main text.
4) Keywords: It is advisable to use 5−8 Keywords. The appropriate choice of Keywords increases the visibility of scientific articles.
5) Introduction: The Introduction should be brief and comprehensive, and ideally completed in a few paragraphs. It should clearly state the background and the rationale of the study, and where appropriate the hypothesis being tested.
6) Materials and Methods: This section should provide sufficient details to allow the reader to repeat the experiment, if necessary. Plant species must be authenticated by an expert botanist. Information for solvents/reagents should include manufacturer, grade and batch number. It is also required to indicate the type and source of the animals used, and the conditions under which the animals were housed and maintained.
7) Results: Results should be concisely presented and explicitly explained, with the appropriate use of figures and tables. Confidence in the data generated from the experiment will be increased by the validation of the methodology and logical elaboration of the new findings on which the value of the study relies.
8) Discussion: This section gives the authors an opportunity to describe how the results contribute to the knowledge and development of a specific subject, or more broadly in a given field of science or technology. New hypotheses and speculations must be substantiated by the results. Discussion should be kept to a minimum.
9) Acknowledgements: This section contains sponsor information and acknowledgement of the contribution by those not listed as authors, including analytical services.
10) References: Authors should follow the examples given below for references. References to unpublished data or personal communications should be avoided.
