About the journal

The central aim of Studies in Science Education (SiSE) is to publish review articles of the highest quality which provide analytical syntheses of research into key topics and issues in science education. In addressing this aim, the Editors and Editorial Advisory Board, are guided by a commitment to:

1maintaining and developing the highest standards of scholarship associated with the Journal.

2publishing articles from as wide a range of authors as possible, in relation both to professional background and country of origin.

3publishing articles which serve both to consolidate and reflect upon existing fields of study and to promote new areas for research activity.

Studies in Science Education will be of interest to all those involved in science education including: science education researchers, doctoral students and masters students; science teachers at elementary, high school and university levels; science education policy makers; science education curriculum developers and text book writers.

Articles are made available to Studies in Science Education either by invitation from the Editors or through potential contributors offering pieces. Given the substantial nature of the review articles, the Editors are willing to give informal feedback on the suitability of proposals, though all contributions, whether invited or not, are subject to full peer review. A limited number of books of special interest and concern to those involved in science education is normally reviewed in each volume.

Peer Review Policy:
All research articles in this journal have undergone rigorous peer review, based on initial editor screening and anonymized refereeing by at least two anonymous referees.

Studies in Science Education is abstracted and indexed in Australian Research Council (ARC) Ranked Journal List; British Education Index; Contents Pages in Education; Educational Research Abstracts online (ERA) and ERIC.

Instructions to Authors

The instructions below are specifically directed at authors that wish to submit a manuscript to Studies in Science Education. For general information, please visit the Publish With Us section of our website.

Studies in Science Education considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to Studies in Science Education, that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Studies in Science Education incurs and their papers will not be published.

Studies in Science Education is an international research and policy review journal. The majority of contributions are invited, but submissions conforming with the Journal's general character are welcomed. Potential authors should note that reports of individual empirical studies are unlikely to be published. They should also note that the Journal seeks to maintain a strong international orientation. Authors of research reviews should avoid limiting themselves to particular countries or regions, and, where possible, the international implications of more localized policy studies should be drawn out.

Authors of invited articles should note that Studies in Science Education operates a policy of peer review. The Editors are willing to provide informal comment on early drafts of papers.

Manuscript Preparation

1. General guidelines

Papers are accepted only in English.

Articles should be typically 12,000–20,000 words in length. Authors should include a word count with their manuscript.

Manuscripts should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; appendices (as appropriate); references; table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figure caption(s) (as a list). A word count should be included and authors should indicate if the paper is for a special issue.

Abstracts of 100–200 words are required for all papers submitted.

Each paper should have five or six keywords.

All the authors of a paper should include their full names, affiliations, postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and email addresses on the cover page of the manuscript. One author should be identified as the Corresponding Author.

For all manuscripts non-discriminatory language is mandatory. Sexist or racist terms should not be used.

When using a word which is or is asserted to be a proprietary term or trade mark, authors must use the symbol ® or TM.

 3. Figures

It is in the author's interest to provide the highest quality figure format possible. Please be sure that all imported scanned material is scanned at the appropriate resolution: 1200 dpi for line art, 600 dpi for grayscale and 300 dpi for colour.

Figures must be saved separate to text. Please do not embed figures in the paper file.

Files should be saved as one of the following formats: TIFF (tagged image file format), PostScript or EPS (encapsulated PostScript), and should contain all the necessary font information and the source file of the application (e.g. CorelDraw/Mac, CorelDraw/PC).

All figures must be numbered in the order in which they appear in the paper (e.g. figure 1, figure 2). In multi-part figures, each part should be labelled (e.g. figure 1(a), figure 1(b)).

As an author, you are required to secure permission if you want to reproduce any figure, table, or extract from the text of another source. This applies to direct reproduction as well as "derivative reproduction" (where you have created a new figure or table which derives substantially from a copyrighted source). For further information and FAQs, please see http://journalauthors.tandf.co.uk/preparation/permission.asp

4. Colour

The Journal has no free colour pages within its annual page allowance. Authors of accepted papers who propose publishing figures in colour in the print version should consult Taylor & Francis at proof stage to agree a financial contribution to colour reproduction costs. Figures that appear in black-and-white in the print edition of the Journal will appear in colour in the online edition, assuming colour originals are supplied.

5. Reproduction of copyright material

It is a condition of publication that authors assign copyright or licence the publication rights in their articles, including abstracts, to Taylor & Francis. This enables us to ensure full copyright protection and to disseminate the article, and of course the Journal, to the widest possible readership in print and electronic formats as appropriate. Authors retain many rights under the Taylor & Francis rights policies, which can be found at
www.informaworld.com/authors_journals_copyright_position . Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.
