Aims and Scope
Water management and water infrastructure are preconditions for civilization, and demands on our water resources are increasing. In some regions these demands are exceeding capacities to supply water. Our old water institutions, laws, regulations, treaties and agreements are straining to meet the new demographic realities.
Throughout the world there is a growing need to build a capacity for integrated water management in order to create new opportunities for cooperation, community and peace building; to respond to scarcities; and to manage local, national and trans-boundary conflicts.
Building this capacity for integrated water management calls for a new dialogue between many different private and public communities - policy making, diplomatic, administrative, financial, legal and technical/scientific. This dialogue must also include the traditional water communities - industrial, urban, agricultural and transportation.
Water Policy provides a forum for this dialogue. It invites these communities into this forum both to shape and to be shaped by thinking and debate on water policy worldwide.
The journal will publish analyses, reviews and debates on all policy aspects of water resources. Examples of such topics are:
Ecosystems, engineering, management and restoration
Engineering and design
River-basin and watershed management
Multiple uses of water
Pollution monitoring and control
Management, use and sharing of trans-boundary waters, treaties and allocation agreements
Capacity building
Flood control and disaster management
Groundwater remediation and the conjunctive use of groundwater and surface water
Public participation, consensus building and confidence building
Conflict management and negotiations of water resources
Demand management
Commercialization of water
Integrated water resources management
Allocation of risks among stakeholders
Types of contribution
Water Policy will publish reviews, research papers and progress reports in, among others, the following areas: financial, diplomatic, organizational, legal, administrative and research; organized by country, region or river basin.

Manuscript Submissions
All papers should be submitted electronically to
https://www.editorialmanager.com/wpol/
Manuscripts must be in English. Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form (in English or in any other language) without the written consent of the publisher.
All contributions will be peer reviewed. The journal will accept full-length original research papers of no more than 9,000 words, editorials and short notes on work in progress. In addition, the Editors will facilitate active discussion of topics by accepting Letters to the Editor. Review articles and special issues on key topics are encouraged.
Review process: All manuscripts are sent to a minimum of two independent reviewers. The final decision on acceptance is made by the Editor-in-Chief. Manuscripts may be sent back to the authors for revision if necessary. Revised manuscript submissions should be made as soon as possible (within six weeks) after the receipt of the reviewers?reports. All authors are asked to submit full contact details of three potential reviewers of their manuscript. The Editors may utilize all of these reviewers, but typically will utilize one of these and two other independent reviewers.
Manuscript Preparation
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced, with a font size of 12 or 10pt. Insert one return between paragraphs, and a double return between paper title, authors?names, and addresses on the first page. The corresponding author must be identified (include a fax number and e-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to a uniform standard. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
Abstract: The article must be preceded by an abstract of no more than 200 words, describing the entire paper, and a keyword list (5-10 words).
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title (10 words is the desired maximum length), Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main texts (Introduction to explain the background work, the practical applications and the nature and purpose of the paper; Body to contain the primary message, with clear lines of thought and validation of the techniques described; Conclusion to indicate the significant contribution of the manuscript with its limitations, advantages and applications), Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. Footnotes (except for Table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Units: The SI system should be used for all scientific and laboratory data; if it is necessary to quote other units, these should be added in parentheses. Temperature should be given in degrees Celsius. The unit æ…?/SPAN>illion?(109 in America, 1012 in Europe) is ambiguous and must not be used.
References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to the author/SPAN> name (without initials) and year of publication (e.g. "Since Peterson (1993) has shown that..." or "This is in the agreement with results obtained later (Kramer, 1994)". For publications by three or more authors, when the names are mentioned in the text, use Smith et al. (1999); when the names are not mentioned use (Smith et al., 1999). The list of references should be arranged alphabetically by authors?names. The manuscript should be carefully checked to ensure that the spelling of authors?names and dates is exactly the same in the text as in the reference list.
References should be given in the following form:
Ait-Kadi, M., Shady, A., & Szollosi-Nagy, A. (1997). Water, the world/SPAN> common heritage. Proceedings of the First World Water Forum. Elsevier, Marrakech, Morocco.
Grigg, N. S. (1996). Water Resources Management. McGraw-Hill, New York.
Kalbermatten, J. K. (1991). Water and sanitation for all, will it become a reality or remain a dream? Water International, 16(3), 121-126.
Figures: Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as Figures and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustration. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be grouped together on a separate page.
Photographs: If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Because figures may be resized in the course of production, scale bars, not magnification values, should be used where applicable.
Colours: Colour figures can be accommodated in the journal, but authors will be charged the full cost for their inclusion.
Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, e.g. in graphs.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt; the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Proofs are to be returned to Emma Gulseven at IWA Publishing in London.
E-prints and Offprints
The corresponding author will receive an electronic file of their paper upon publication. Alternatively, paper offprints can be ordered by the authors using the Offprint Order Form, available from IWA Publishing on request.
Copyright
Upon acceptance of a paper, authors will be asked to sign a Copyright Assignment Form releasing copyright of the paper to IWA Publishing. Provision is made on the form for work performed for the United States Government (which is not subject to copyright restriction) and some United Kingdom Government work (which may be Crown Copyright) and in other extenuating circumstances.
Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright exists.
