About the journal
Bangladesh is a humid, subtropical country favouring luxuriant growth of microorganisms, fungi and plants from algae to angiosperms with rich diversity. She has the largest mangrove forest of the world in addition to diverse hilly and wetland habitats. More than a century back, foreign explorers endeavoured several floral expeditions, but little was done for non-vasculars and pteridophytes. In recent times, Bangladesh National Herbarium has been carrying out taxonomic research in Bangladesh along with few other national institutes (e.g. Department of Botany of public universities and Bangladesh Forest Research Institute). But, a complete inventory is yet to be accomplished. Moreover, the novel and applied branches of plant taxonomy are still emerging in Bangladesh with great potentials. There are a few peer-reviewed journals published from Bangladesh related to plant sciences (e.g. Bangladesh Journal of Botany) which are open to all branches of Botany including plant taxonomy. Because of page restrictions, they only publish small taxonomic papers and are not enough to meet the growing needs of native plant taxonomists. Moreover, there is no journal dedicated to ethnobotanical studies or plant conservation issues including review articles.
In 1992, Bangladesh Association of Plant Taxonomists (BAPT) was formed to promote taxonomic research in Bangladesh. BAPT is committed to promote and stimulate interest in taxonomic research and academic activities in all plant groups with a view to inventorying conservation and the plant diversity of the country and with an ultimate object for their sustainable development. The most important achievement of the BAPT lies with the publication of its Journal, 'Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy' (BJPT) on a regular basis since June 1994 to meet the needs of plant taxonomists working on the flora of Bangladesh. In addition, the journal welcomes and publishes papers from abroad, especially from Asia.
The BJPT is a peer-reviewed journal with two issues being published every year (June and December) by the Chief Editor on behalf of Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy. The Journal publishes original research papers relevant to taxonomy of all plant groups (from algae to angiosperms and also fungi), including biosystematics, biodiversity, ethnobotany and conservation issues. Review papers are occasionally invited for publication.
Instructions to Authors
The Bangladesh Journal of Plant Taxonomy (BJPT), a peer-reviewed biannual journal, has been published by the Bangladesh Association of Plant Taxonomists (BAPT) since 1994. The Journal publishes research papers relevant to taxonomy of all plant groups (from fungi, cyanobacteria and algae to angiosperms), biosystematics, ethnobotany, biodiversity and conservation.
Manuscript categories. Manuscripts submitted to the Journal should be in the form of Research Papers - articles which are complete in depth scientific studies; Short Communications - articles of limited scope; Checklists; or Review Papers - articles by specialists. Authors planning a review article must contact the Chief Editor before preparing the manuscript.
Manuscript submission. Each manuscript submitted to BJPT for review implies that the work is original research in the sense that the data and information have not been published elsewhere or will not be in this form and length. Manuscript should be submitted in duplicate to the Executive Editor to the following address. In case of postal submission, original manuscripts will not be returned to the authors, therefore copies of manuscript should be kept with the authors. Electronic submission (in a single Word File, including tables and figures at the end) is also accepted as an e-mail attachment (file size limit 2 MB). Only formal submission will be entertained.

Page limits. The printing area of the Journal is 18.5 �13.5 cm. Standard Research and Review Papers - 16 printed pages; Checklists - 12 printed pages (if an account is lengthy, may be published in instalments) and Short Communications - 6 printed pages. Shorter submissions get priority when space is limited.
Manuscript format. Manuscripts should be written in English, with British spelling, typed in A4 paper with 1.5 line space with 3 cm margin on all sides. Page number and line number should be given in every page of a manuscript. For headlines and sub-headlines, only boldface and italics should be used, not CAPITALS or underlines.
Cover page should include only the ‘Title' of the paper, name(s) of the author(s), address where the study was conducted, permanent and present addresses of the author(s) with e-mail address(es).
Text should include ‘Title', ‘Keywords' (maximum six words), ‘Abstract' (concise, maximum 200 words), ‘Introduction', ‘Materials and Methods', ‘Results and Discussion', ‘Acknowledgements' (if any), and ‘References'. In case of floristic paper, ‘Taxonomic Enumeration' may replace ‘Results and Discussion'. All tables and figures should be attached after the ‘References' section.
Authors must thoroughly check correct spelling and authors of scientific names before submission. Authors of scientific names should be mentioned at least once in the text.
References. Following examples show how references should be cited in the text: "Khan (1991) and Islam and Hossain (1995) showed that ........"; "........ highlighted the conservation issues of the species (Alam, 1999; Rahman et al., 2002)." More than one reference should be cited chronologically. If two or more articles by the same first author in the same year are cited, letters should be added to the year (e.g., Begum et al., 2006a, b, c), even if the co-authors are various and have to be cited with "et al." in the text. Recent issues of the journal should be consulted for the referencing style of BJPT, especially before preparing floristic/revision manuscripts.
In the References section, the list should be alphabetical by the last name of the first author. All publications referred to in the text must be included in the ‘References' section or vice versa. Unpublished materials should be cited only when no alternative form exists. Following are examples to list 1) a book, 2) an edited book, 3) a chapter of a book, 4) a paper published in a journal, and 5) information cited from internet:

Titles not in English must be cited in original language. If they (and the authors) appear in non-Latin script, they should be translated in English.
The authors are solely responsible for the accuracy of the references cited.
Tables and figures. These should be mentioned in the text and should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3). Tables should be typed on separate sheets. If printed copies are provided, photographs should be on glossy paper with good contrast. Figures (sketches / maps / graphs) should be drawn with permanent black ink on tracing paper or printed from a laser printer. If plates are submitted, the figures must be mounted on cardboard. Electronic photographs or drawings are also accepted with good resolution, 300 dpi and 600 dpi, respectively in TIFF or JPEG formats. Legends of tables and figures should be self-explanatory. A long table is preferred to be included as an Appendix.
To label different parts of a plate (other than algae) capital English letters (A, B, C) should be used. In case of algae, Arabic numerals should be used. "Arial" or "Helvetica" is the preferred font for any labelling. Figures should be labelled in such a manner to stand reduction to accommodate into Journal's text space. Scale should be given along the figures where necessary instead of magnification in the legend.
Units. The International System of Units (SI) should be used, except Celsius for temperature. Negative exponents should be used (e.g. mg l-1 h-1). Authors should consult following examples while preparing a manuscript: "5 cm" not "5cm", "10%" not "10 %", "n = 20" not "n=20", "Figs 1-4" not "Figs. 1-4", "13(2): 40-60" not "13(2):40-60".
Short communications. These should not exceed 6 journal pages including tables and figures. The manuscript should not have any headed sections, but ‘Keywords', ‘Acknowledgements' (if any) and ‘References'.
Review procedure. All manuscripts will be reviewed by one or two experts. Submission may, however, be returned without review if, in the opinion of the Editorial Board, is not appropriate for the Journal, is of poor quality or fails to follow the Journal's format. Executive Editor will notify the corresponding author of the acceptance, necessary revision, or rejection of the manuscript. Authors communicated for a revision should submit a revised manuscript within three months of the communication. Failure in doing so may require a resubmission or even result in rejection of the manuscript.
Proofs. Proofreading is the responsibility of the corresponding author. Only corrections of typesetting errors are accepted. Proof could be printed out, marked and sent back to the Executive Editor. Alternatively, corrections could be detailed out in an e-mail. Substantial changes at the proof stage are not allowed without Chief Editor's approval. In that case Chief Editor should be communicated before returning the proof. Authors may be charged for such major changes. Authors who expect to be absent are requested to give notice of their temporary postal addresses with dates. Corrections not returned by deadline will not be taken into consideration.
Reprints. Corresponding author will receive 25 reprints free of cost. For additional reprints, orders with payments should reach the Chief Editor / Executive Editor one month before the publication of the journal. The cost for additional reprints may be fixed on the total page numbers of the paper. A PDF version of the published paper could be sent by e-mail upon request. The 'Terms and Conditions' on using PDF versions of articles published in BJPT by the authors is available with the Executive Editor.
Charges. There is no page charge for manuscripts complying with the page limits. Each additional page will be charged Tk 300 or US$ 10. For coloured photographs/plates, Tk 3,000 or US$ 50 will be charged for the 1st plate and Tk 1,000 or US$ 25 for each consecutive plate. These charges may change in a short notice. The total applicable charges will be communicated to the corresponding author and all charges should be paid before printing of a paper. Authors from abroad have to bear the postal charges of sending reprints to them.
Declaration. Upon review, the corresponding author needs to sign a ‘Declaration Form' (available with the Executive Editor) on behalf of all authors stating that the paper is original, not published elsewhere, and the copyright is transferred to BAPT.
Copyright. Copyright of all published articles belongs to the BAPT. Copyright transfer is effective once the author receives written confirmation of acceptance of the manuscript. The copyright covers the exclusive and unlimited rights to reproduce and distribute an article in any form of reproduction (printing, electronic media, or any other form) and also translation right. The author, however, reserves the right to use the published matter in any non-profitable means. It is author's responsibility to obtain the permission from appropriate authority if figures are reused from a previously published document.

Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
- The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
- The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
- When available, the URLs to access references online are provided, including those for open access versions of the reference. The URLs are ready to click (e.g., http://pkp.sfu.ca).
- The text is in English; is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
- The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
- If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review) have been followed.

Copyright of all published articles belongs to the BAPT. Copyright transfer is effective once the author receives written confirmation of acceptance of the manuscript.
