Instructions to Authors

Submission of manuscripts

Manuscripts must contain original new results in nonlinear science and numerical simulation. This journal aims to provide a medium for rapid publication. Authors are encouraged to submit their paper electronically via our online submission or on paper in triplicate, including reproducible figures in any common graphical format (including eps, bmp etc.) to one of the Co-Editors-in-Chief or to the International Advisory Editors Board with whom the author can communicate efficiently or who's expertise covers the content of the paper. The addresses of Advisory Editors are given in the list of editorial board members in the inside of the cover.

Upon receipt of a paper by one of the Advisory Editors or Editors the author will receive an acknowledgement of receipt. In case the manuscript cannot be handled by the (Advisory) Editor to whom the manuscript has been sent, it will be forwarded to one of the Co-Editors-in-Chief. In this case the author will be informed, on the "acknowledgement of receipt" form, who will handle the paper.

After refereeing, the manuscript will be finally judged by one of the Editors who, contrary to the Advisory Editors, has the right to accept or reject a paper. Submission of a paper will be taken to imply that it represents original work not previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted for publication it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language without the consent of the Publisher.

Manuscript preparation

All manuscripts should be written in good English. The paper copies of the text should be prepared with double line spacing and wide margins, on numbered sheets. Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation: Article title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions, Tables. There is no formal limit for the length of a paper, but the editors may recommend condensation when appropriate.

Authors in Japan kindly note that, upon request, Elsevier Japan will provide a list of people who can check and improve the English of an article before submission. Contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Japan K.K., 1-9-15 Higashi Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0044, Japan; tel.: +81-3-5561-5032; fax: +81-3-5561-5045;jp.info@elsevier.com

Corresponding author. The name, complete postal address, telephone and fax numbers and the e-mail address of the corresponding author should be given on the first page of the manuscript. In the case of multiple authors, one should be designated as the corresponding author.

Keywords. Please supply up to 4 keywords of your own choice that describe the content of your article in more detail for indexing purposes. Please note that a delay in supplying keywords may delay the publication of your paper.

References. References should be listed in numerical order, and should be numbered in the text between square brackets. The format for referencing books and articles in books, journals and proceedings is:

Formulae. Formulae should be typewritten whenever possible. Alternatively, a fine drawing pen and black ink should be used. It is extremely important that all mathematical symbols and letters used are identified and listed and that the required style of appearance of such symbols is clearly indicated, e.g., bold face, italics, script, outline, fraktur, etc. Sub- and superscript should be clearly indicated where confusion might arise. Use a full stop as a decimal sign. Identify in the margin any symbols that might be confused with similar symbols, e.g., letter l and figure 1, capital letter O and figure 0, letter e, epsilon, and element sign, etc.

Footnotes. Footnotes should be kept to an absolute minimum and used only when essential.

Illustrations Illustrations should also be submitted in triplicate: one master set and two sets of copies, numbered and a list of captions appended to the manuscript. The line drawings in the master set should be original laser printer or plotter output or drawn in black india ink, with careful lettering, large enough (3-5 mm) to remain legible after reduction for printing. The photographs should be originals, with somewhat more contrast than is required in the printed version. They should be unmounted unless part of a composite figure. Any scale markers should be inserted on the photograph, not drawn below it. Colour plates. Figures may be published in colour, if this is judged essential by the Editor. The Publisher and the author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information is available from the Publisher.

After acceptance Notification. You will be notified by the Editor of the acceptance of your article and invited to supply an electronic version of the accepted text, if this is not already available.

Copyright transfer. You will be asked to transfer the copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Proofs. Authors will receive proofs when an e-mail address is available. Authors should answer clearly any question in the proofs. No new material may be inserted at the time of proofreading. Author(s) should be diligent and prompt in proofreading.

Author Benefits

No page charges. Publishing in Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation is free.

Free offprints. The corresponding author will be provided with a PDF file of the article via e-mail. The PDF file is a watermarked version of the published article and includes a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer outlining the terms and conditions of use.

Discount. Contributors to Elsevier journals are entitled to a 30% discount on all Elsevier books.
