About the journal

About the journal

Zdravniški vestnik / Slovenian Medical Journal is the professional journal of Slovene medicine, and is published by the Slovenian Medical Association. As the only national journal of medicine, it is intended to perform the following tasks:

satisfying the professional needs of Slovene medicine,

publishing professional and research contributions by Slovene physicians and international recognition of Slovene medicine connected with this,

satisfying the intellectual and cultural needs and the need to associate of the widest circle of Slovene medicine.

The first number was published on 24.1.1929, and the first editor was Franc Derganc. It initially ceased publication during World War II, because of the cultural silence, but in 1944/45 published 10 numbers of Partizanski zdravstveni vestnik (Partisan Medical Journal). After the war, it was published as Zdravstveni vestnik. Miroslav Kališnik and Stanislav Mahkota ensured international recognition through their editorial work, in which they embedded bio-medical information and international standards, including review systems.

From 2009 is journal currently edited by Saša Markovič, Editor-in-Chief; Matija Cevc, Responsible Editor, and editors: Uroš Ahčan, Tit Albreht, Bojana Beovič, Maja Bresjanac, Ksenija Geršak and Andreja Kocijančič.

It is published in editions of 4350 copies, normally 14 number during the year totalling around 900 pages. Zdravniški vestnik-Slovenian Medical Journal regularly indexes and/or abstracts: Science Citation Index Expanded, Journal Citation Reports/Scienece Edition, CABI-Global Health, PubMed, COBISS, Biomedicina Slovenica.
Instructions to Authors

INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

These guidelines conform to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals that have been prepared by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors. Complete instructions are available in N Engl J Med; 309-15 and in Ann Intern Med 1997; 36-47 and at http://www.icmje.org.

Zdravniski vestnik-Slovene Medical Journal (ZV) is an official journal of the Slovenian Medical Association. ZV Editorial Office address is as follows: Zdravniski vestnik, Dalmatinova 10, 1000 Ljubljana. Phone: 386 1 434 25 82, Fax: 386 1 434 25 84, E-mail: vestnik@szd.si.

General editorial policy

ZV publishes only original articles never submitted or published elsewhere before appearing in the journal. Legal grounds comprise international copyright law, ethic principles and economic usage of resources. Author is responsible for all statements contained in the article. If several authors collaborate on the article, an exact address with phone number of the author who will be responsible for all further correspondency with journal should be included. Author is obliged to remind the editor-in-chief if the article contains some content(s) of which some previous report has been already published. Each such article should be noted and cited as a source in a new article. Its copies should be included so that editor-in-chief can decide on further actions. Secondary publication in the same or foreign language especially in other countries can be justified and useful if the following criteria are met:

1. The authors have received approval from the editors of both journals; the editor concerned with secondary publication must have a photocopy, reprint, or manuscript of the primary version.

2. The paper for secondary publication is intended for a different group of readers; an abbreviated version could be sufficient.

3. The secondary version faithfully reflects the data and interpretations of the primary version.

4. The footnote on the title page of the secondary version informs readers, peers, and documenting agencies that the paper has been published in whole or in part and states the primary reference.

When reporting experiments on human subjects, it must be indicated whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983 in Tokyo. Author must obtain a written consent of the investigated subject.

When reporting experiments on animals, it must be indicated whether the actions taken followed appropriate ethic guidelines for appropriate care and use of laboratory animals.

Articles will be sorted in one of the following rubrics: Editorial, Research article, Case report, Commentaries and Discussions, Review articles, Quality in health service, Letters to editor and Reviews,

Research articles must be written in English. Slovenian abstract must be expanded up to 3 printed pages while the English one should not exceed 250 words.

If submitted text demands a thorough review of the English reader, the expenses are to be covered by the author.

The rest of contributed articles should be written in Slovene, using a concise and terminology competent language. With research articles, case reports, commentaries and discussions and review articles, article title, abstract, keywords, tables and figure related text should be translated into English.

Articles should be of maximum 12 pages having 30 lines each with tables and references included.

Manuscripts should include only units of measurement in accordance with the International System of Units (SI) and those allowed by the Slovenian law.

Covering letter

Covering letter signed by all coauthors must include:

1) A statement that the manuscript sent or any text part (with the exception of Abstract) have not been sent for publication to anyone else;

2) A statement that the manuscript has been read and approved by all the authors;

3) Ethic Office approval date;

4) A statement of human subjects involved who gave a written consent for their collaboration;

5) Written consent for publication of photographs which may reveal a patient identity;

6) Written permission of the publishing company owning a copyright for reproduction of photographs, schemes or tables;

7) Written statement of possible financial or material support from the pharmaceutical industy or medical equipment manufacturer;

8) Information on relationships that might lead to a conflict of interest;

Manuscript

All articles should be submitted either in floppy disk or compact disc (CD) format. In addition, one printed copy of the manuscript should be enclosed. The text should be double-spaced having 30 lines per page. Pages should be numbered and margins should be at least 30 mm wide.

Abbreviations are allowed provided they are explained first time they appear in the text. All commonly perceived abbreviations do not need explanation (for example L for litre, mg for miligram, etc.)

Title page should carry:

a) Slovenian title of the article which should be concise but informative (if longer than 90 characters, additional shorter version for running title should be added);

b) English title of the article, author's name and surname, with his or her exact academic degree(s) and institutional affiliation; Complete name of the department(s) and institution(s) to which the work should be attributed (if article represents a team work, coauthors' information must be included; the name and address of the author responsible for correspondency about the manuscript;

c) 5 keywords (only words precisely defining the article content and not included in the title should be used); use appropriate terminology (MePo Index Medicus)

d) source(s) of support in the form of grants, equipment, drugs, or all of these; Include a contract/agreement No.

Second page should carry a structured Slovenian abstract (250 words) and should include the following headings and data:

Background - State the purpose of the present study and the main hypothesis to be investigated.

Methods - Describe the main characteristics of technique used to fulfill the purpose of the study, a selection of sample under investigation (randomization, double-blinded testing, cross-testing, placebo testing, etc.), standard test values, time relationships (prospective or retrospective study). Also, methods of sample selection, inclusion/exclusion criteria, number of subject included in the study and analysis must be described. Furthermore, all drugs and chemicals used, including generic name(s), dose(s), and route(s) of administration should be identified.

Results - Describe the main study results. Include also important measurements that have not been included in the study results. Cite a confidence interval and a precise level of statistic characteristics. With comparative studies, confidence interval should apply to differences between groups. Only absolute numbers must be quoted.

Conclusions - Cite only those findings coming from data used in your research and state their clinical application. Mention any additional studies to be done before research findings can have their clinical application. State both positive and negative conclusions.

As some articles do not follow a perceived article structure (for example Review article), their structure should be modified accordingly. It should contain 50-200 words.

The third page should carry an English version of title, key words and abstract.

The pages that follow should carry the rest of the text which should be thoughtfully and clearly divided into chapters and sub-chapters (Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Conclusion(s). Paragraphs should be lowered for one line. Tables, figure legends and abbreviation list with explanations should be written on separate sheets.

Tables

Type or print out each table on a separate sheet of paper both in Slovene and English. Number tables consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text and supply a brief title for each. Give each column a short or abbreviated heading. Place explanatory matter in footnotes, not in the heading. Explain in footnotes all nonstandard abbreviations that are used in each table. Identify statistical measures of variations, such as standard deviation and standard error of the mean. If you use data from another published or unpublished source, obtain permission and acknowledge them fully. Be sure that each table is cited in the text.

Figures

Submit one copy of a complete set of figures. Figures should be professionally drawn and photographed; freehand or typewritten lettering is unacceptable. Instead of original drawings, x-ray films, and other material, send sharp, glossy, black-and-white photographic prints, usually 127 x 173 mm but no larger than 203 x 254 mm. Letters, numbers, and symbols should be clear and even throughout and of sufficient size that when reduced for publication each item will still be legible. Titles and detailed explanations belong in the legends for illustrations not on the illustrations themselves.

Each figure should have a label pasted on its back indicating the number of the figure, author's name, and top of the figure. You are advised not to bend figures or mount them on cardboard.

Photomicrographs should have internal scale markers. Symbols, arrows, or letters used in photomicrographs should contrast with the background.

If patients' photographs are used, either the subjects must not be identifiable or their pictures must be accompanied by written permission to use the photograph.

Ensure that figures are numbered consecutively according to the order in which they have been first cited in the text.

If a figure has been already published, acknowledge the original source and submit written permission from the copyright holder to reproduce the material. Permission is required irrespective of authorship or publisher except for documents in the public domain.

Legends for illustrations

Type or print out legends for illustrations both in Slovene and English using double spacing, starting on a separate page, with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. When symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters are used to identify parts of the illustrations, identify and explain each one clearly in the legend. Explain the internal scale and identify the method of staining in photomicrographs.

Literature

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals in parentheses. References cited only in tables or figure legends should be numbered in accordance with the sequence established by the first identification in the text of the particular table or figure.

Literature should be cited at the end of the artcle according to their sequence throuhout the manuscript text. If there were 6 authors or less, cite all of them. If there were 7 authors, cite first 6 authors and add et al. Journal titles from which a citation originates should be abbreviated in accordance to the style used in Index Medicus. Please refer to http://www.nlm.nih.gov.

Avoid using abstracts as references. References to papers accepted but not yet published should be designated as "in press" or "forthcoming"; authors should obtain written permission to cite such papers as well as verification that they have been accepted for publication.

.

Avoid citing a "personal communication" unless it provides essential information not available from a public source, in which case the name of the person and date of communication should be cited in parentheses in the text. For scientific articles, authors should obtain written permission and confirmation of accuracy from the source of a personal communication. The references must be verified by the author(s) against the original documents.

References

Note: With journals that are not paginated consecutively, please add a journal number in parentheses after volume.

Note: When citing pages, add only even numbered pages range. For example, for pages from 1850 to 1856 write 1850-6.
