About BMC Family Practice

This page includes information about the aims and scope of BMC Family Practice, editorial policies, open access and article-processing charges, the peer review process and other information. For details of how to prepare and submit a manuscript through the online submission system, please see the instructions for authors.

Scope

BMC Family Practice is an open access, peer-reviewed journal that considers articles on all aspects of primary health care, including clinical management of patients, professional training, shared decision making, and the organisation and evaluation of health care in the community.

It is journal policy to publish work deemed by peer reviewers to be a coherent and sound addition to scientific knowledge and to put less emphasis on interest levels, provided that the research constitutes a useful contribution to the field.

Open access

All articles published by BMC Family Practice are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers. Further information about open access can be found here.

Authors of articles published in BMC Family Practice are the copyright holders of their articles and have granted to any third party, in advance and in perpetuity, the right to use, reproduce or disseminate the article, according to the BioMed Central copyright and license agreement.

For authors who are US government employees or are prevented from being copyright holders for similar reasons, BioMed Central can accommodate non-standard copyright lines. Please contact us if further information is needed.

Article-processing charges

Open access publishing is not without costs. BMC Family Practice therefore levies an article-processing charge of £1325/$2215/€1600 for each article accepted for publication. We routinely waive charges for authors from low-income countries. Generally, if the submitting author's institution is a Member the cost of the article-processing charge is covered by the membership, and no further charge is payable. In the case of authors whose institutions are Supporter Members, however, a discounted article-processing charge is payable by the author. For further details, see our article-processing charge page.

Publication and peer review process

Publication of research articles by BMC Family Practice is dependent primarily on their scientific validity and coherence as judged by our external expert editors and/or peer reviewers, who will also assess whether the writing is comprehensible and whether the work represents a useful contribution to the field.

BMC Family Practice operates an 'open peer review' policy meaning reviewers are asked to sign their reviews. The pre-publication history including all submitted versions, reviewers' reports and authors' responses will be linked to from the published article.

Authors will be able to check the progress of their manuscript through the submission system at any time by logging into My BMC Family Practice, a personalized section of the site.

Reprints

High-quality, bound reprints can be purchased for all articles published. Please see our reprints website for further information about ordering reprints.

Supplements

BMC Family Practice will consider supplements based on proceedings (full articles or meeting abstracts), reviews or research. All articles submitted for publication in supplements are subject to peer review. Published supplements are fully searchable and freely accessible online and can also be produced in print. All full length articles (proceedings, reviews or research articles) are indexed by PubMed. PubMed displays the title of the supplement only in the case of meeting abstract collections. For further information, please contact us.

Editorial policies

All manuscripts submitted to BMC Family Practice should adhere to BioMed Central's editorial policies.

Appeals and complaints

Authors who wish to appeal a rejection or make a complaint should, in the first instance, contact the Executive Editor who will provide details of the journal's complaints procedure.

Citing articles in BMC Family Practice

Articles in BMC Family Practice should be cited in the same way as articles in a traditional journal. Because articles are not printed, they do not have page numbers; instead, they are given a unique article number.

Article citations follow this format:

Authors: Title. BMC Fam Pract [year], [volume number]:[article number].

e.g. Roberts LD, Hassall DG, Winegar DA, Haselden JN, Nicholls AW, Griffin JL: Increased hepatic oxidative metabolism distinguishes the action of Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor delta from Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor gamma in the Ob/Ob mouse. BMC Fam Pract 2009, 1:115.

refers to article 115 from Volume 1 of the journal.

Why publish your article in BMC Family Practice?

High visibility

BMC Family Practice's open access policy allows maximum visibility of articles published in the journal as they are available to a wide, global audience. Articles that have been especially highly accessed are highlighted with a 'Highly accessed' graphic, which appears on the journal's contents pages and search results.

Speed of publication

BMC Family Practice offers a fast publication schedule whilst maintaining rigorous peer review; all articles must be submitted online, and peer review is managed fully electronically (articles are distributed in PDF form, which is automatically generated from the submitted files). Articles will be published with their final citation after acceptance, in both fully browsable web form, and as a formatted PDF; the article will then be available through BMC Family Practice, BioMed Central and PubMed Central and will also be included in PubMed.

Flexibility

Online publication in BMC Family Practice gives authors the opportunity to publish large datasets, large numbers of color illustrations and moving pictures, to display data in a form that can be read directly by other software packages so as to allow readers to manipulate the data for themselves, and to create all relevant links (for example, to PubMed, to sequence and other databases, and to other articles).

Promotion and press coverage

Articles published in BMC Family Practice are included in article alerts and regular email updates. Some may be included in abstract books mailed to academics and are highlighted on BMC Family Practice's pages and on the BioMed Central homepage.

In addition, articles published in BMC Family Practice may be promoted by press releases to the general or scientific press. These activities increase the exposure and number of accesses for articles published in BMC Family Practice. A list of articles recently press-released by journals published by BioMed Central is available here.

Authors of articles published in BMC Family Practice retain the copyright of their articles and are free to reproduce and disseminate their work (for further details, see the BioMed Central copyright and license agreement).

Please make sure you have satisfied the points on the following checklist before submitting your manuscript. If you have any questions about the submission process, please contact info@biomedcentral.com. If you are submitting a manuscript to a particular Special Issue, please refer to its specific name in your covering letter.

1. Email addresses
Do you have a list of the email addresses for all the co-authors of the manuscript? You will need to provide these so that we can inform the co-authors when the manuscript has been received and when it is published.

2. Instructions for Authors and peer review policy
Have you read the detailed Instructions for Authors for BMC Family Practice? You may also like to read BMC Family Practice's peer review policy.

If you are planning to submit a TeX file, please submit your TeX file as the main manuscript file and your bib/bbl file as a dependent file. Please also convert your TeX file into a PDF and submit this PDF as an additional file with the name 'Reference PDF'. This PDF will be used by internal staff as a reference point to check the layout of the article as the author intended.

3. Covering letter, peer reviewers and editorial board selection
Have you prepared a covering letter for your submission, explaining why we should publish your manuscript and elaborating on any issues relating to our editorial policies detailed in the instructions for authors? This should be provided using the 'cover letter' section of the submission process.

Do you have all the files for the manuscript in an acceptable format?

  • Main manuscript
Formats: DOC, DOCX , PDF , RTF (rich text format) , DVI , TEX
Tables less than 2 pages (about 90 rows) should be included at the end of the manuscript. Longer tables should be submitted, and referred to in the text, as additional files. TeX files must use the BioMed Central TeX template.
  • Figure files
Formats: EPS , PDF (for line drawings) , PNG , TIFF (for photographs and screen dumps) , JPEG (for photographs and screen dumps) , BMP , DOC, DOCX , PPT, PPTX
Must be separate files, not embedded in the main manuscript.

Files must be named with the three letter file extension appropriate to the file type (eg .pdf, .xls, .txt)
Additional material files should include necessary material that cannot be included in the PDF version of the published article, such as large datasets or movies . Tables should ordinarily be included in the manuscript file, unless they are exceptionally large (more than 2 manuscript pages or 90 rows). The manuscript file should include a short description of any additional files and software necessary to view them.
  • Please refer to the Instructions for Authors for further information about suitable file types.
