About the journal

Aims & Scope

Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine, SBiRM, publishes Research Articles, Communications, Applications Notes that include protocols a Clinical Corner that includes case reports, Review Articles and Hypotheses and Letters to the Editor on human and animal reproduction. The journal will highlight the use of systems approaches including genomic, cellular, proteomic, metabolomic, bioinformatic, molecular, and biochemical, to address fundamental questions in reproductive biology, reproductive medicine, and translational research. The journal publishes research involving human and animal gametes, stem cells, developmental biology and toxicology, and clinical care in reproductive medicine. Specific areas of interest to the journal include: male factor infertility and germ cell biology, reproductive technologies (gamete micro-manipulation and cryopreservation, in vitro fertilization/embryo transfer (IVF/ET) and contraception. Research that is directed towards developing new or enhanced technologies for clinical medicine or scientific research in reproduction is of significant interest to the Journal.

Readership

Physiologists, andrologists, pathologists, biochemists, biophysicists, molecular biologists, toxicologists, animal scientists, veterinarians, psychiatrists, neurologists, endocrinologists, immunologists, obstetricians, gynecologists, and fertility specialists.

Submission of Manuscripts

Manuscripts should be submitted online using the journal's Manuscript Central system - http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sbrm. All manuscripts will be acknowledged by e-mail upon receipt. You may also suggest up to three expert reviewers in the field and conflicts of interest must be clearly stated. Please provide the contact information for the suggested reviewers. All manuscripts will be reviewed at arms length. Manuscripts are submitted with the understanding that they are original unpublished works and are not being submitted elsewhere. Authors are responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources and are required to sign an agreement for the transfer of copyright to the publisher. All manuscripts should be prepared using MS Word. If possible the references listed should also be attached in a separate Endnote format. Figures must also be submitted electronically at 300 dpi or higher in the EPS, TIFF, or PSD format. Systems data including, novel sequences and expression information must be submitted to the appropriate public database and referenced in the text. Authors must agree to sharing materials if requested.

Types of Papers

Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine will consider the following types of papers for publication:

Research Articles: are full length in-depth original papers of general interest. There is no upper limit to length.

Communications: are generally shorter in length than Research Articles. They may address a sub-specialty in a specific field and are generally focused to consider a single question.

Applications Notes: present detailed protocols of new or enhanced techniques. These can encompass clinical applications, basic science applications, applications in bioinformatics (new databases or analyses routines). Section headings for the Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion are not required.

Clinical Corner: can present case reports or the results of other patient based analysis. All manuscripts must include a discussion of the known biochemical or clinical basis. Section headings for the Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion are not required.

Review Articles and Hypotheses: are generally commissioned by a member of the Editorial Board. They do not require a Materials and Methods section. Proposals of topics for consideration are always be considered.

Letters to the Editor: are short comments addressing current issues in the field or a recently published article.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Papers must be submitted in English. The editors may reject a manuscript without review if it cannot be reasonably evaluated. Authors not familiar with English are encouraged to seek the assistance of a native English speaker. All manuscripts must be typed in 12 pt font and in double space with margins of at least 1 inch. Lines should be numbered as this facilitates review. For publication, text must be in Microsoft Word for Windows. Charts and tables are considered textual and should also be supplied in a format compatible with Word. All figures (illustrations, diagrams, photographs) should be supplied in the TIFF EPS of PSD format.

Title Page: This should contain the article title, a running head not exceeding 50 characters (including spaces), 4-6 keywords, list of abbreviations, and full contact detailsfor each author. One corresponding author should be identified and the email address provided. Article Type: Research Article, Communication, Applications Notes, Clinical Corner, Review and Hypothesis or Letter to the Editor should be noted along with the length of manuscript in words, and the number of figures and tables.

Abstract: One paragraph between 150-300 words summarizing the content of the article. This should outline the question(s) investigated, the design, essential findings and main conclusions of the study.

Introduction: This should provide the necessary and well-balanced background information for the reader to appreciate the material presented in the manuscript.

Results and Discussion: May be combined or provided as separate sections.

Materials and Methods: Where appropriate the author(s) is expected to clearly state that the study has been approved by the local sanctioning board. Direct subject identifiers must not be included.

Acknowledgements: This should include grant support and any other appropriate information.

Cited Literature: References should be indicated in the text within parentheses by author-date, e.g., [Smith 2004; Smith and Jones 2005; Smith et al. 2006] for multiple authors). The full references should be listed alphabetically by primary author, and presented following the text of the manuscript. Only use et al., in the cited literature list after the 10th author.

Declaration of interest:

It is the policy of all Informa Healthcare, to adhere in principle to the Conflict of Interest policy recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). (http://www.icmje.org/index.html#conflict)

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organizations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. It is the sole responsibility of authors to disclose any affiliation with any organization with a financial interest, direct or indirect, in the subject matter or materials discussed in the manuscript (such as consultancies, employment, paid expert testimony, honoraria, speakers bureaus, retainers, stock options or ownership, patents or patent applications or travel grants) that may affect the conduct or reporting of the work submitted. All sources of funding for research are to be explicitly stated. If uncertain as to what might be considered a potential conflict of interest, authors should err on the side of full disclosure.

All submissions to the journal must include full disclosure of all relationships that could be viewed as presenting a potential conflict of interest. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none. This must be stated at the point of submission (within the manuscript after the main text under a subheading "Declaration of interest" and where available within the appropriate field on the journal's Manuscript Central site). This may be made available to reviewers and will appear in the published article at the discretion of the Editors or Publisher.

If no conflict is declared, the following statement will be attached to all articles:

Declaration of interest: The authors report no conflicts of interest. The authors alone are responsible for the content and writing of the paper.

The intent of this policy is not to prevent authors with these relationships from publishing work, but rather to adopt transparency such that readers can make objective judgments on conclusions drawn.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures (illustrations) should be submitted as separate sheets or files and not be embedded in the text. A short descriptive title should appear above each table with a clear legend below. All units must be included. Figures should be completely labeled. Figure legends should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet or as a separate Word file.

Illustrations

Illustrations submitted (line drawings, halftones, photos, photomicrographs, etc.) should be digital. For highest quality reproduction digital files should follow these guidelines:

300 dpi or higher

Sized to fit on journal page

EPS, TIFF, or PSD format only

Submitted as separate files, not embedded in text files

Color illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. A custom quote will be provided for color art. Good-quality color prints should be provided in their final size. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of color prints deemed unacceptable.

Proofs

Page proofs are sent to the designated corresponding author. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Please note that in the proof stage, only typographical errors, printer's errors and errors in scientific fact can be corrected. No substantial author's changes will be made.

Reprints

Each corresponding author of the article will receive one PDF of their article. Reprints of an individual manuscript are available for order at the time authors review page proofs.
