Instructions to Authors Author Guidelines
Scope of journal content
The Editor welcomes authoritative contributions from people working, or otherwise involved, in psychiatric, mental health and learning disability nursing. Articles must be original and focused upon nursing. They will be well-referenced, or the material will be a practice based first claim to knowledge that is outside the current literature. Papers commenting on published articles may be solicited. Points of view are welcome.
Papers required include:
- reports of clinically focused nursing research that is sound in method and ethics
- articles that incorporate multi-disciplinary collaboration
- reports of enhanced practice and evaluation, e.g. quality assurance, audit
- theoretical discussions/review articles, e.g. of research, nursing
- development units/commentaries
- proposals for special reports, e.g. research projects, analysis of political and social dialogue, conference debate.
Research and review papers
Prospective authors for review papers should initially discuss their proposals with one of the editors. Research papers should not normally exceed 3,000 words. Reviews should not exceed 5,000 words.
Practice Development
Practice development acts as the link between the researcher and the practitioner. This section will explore all aspects of the theory and application of practice development activities. Successes and failures will have equal part to play in examining the practical application of research and the role of evidence within the provision of effective mental healthcare. Papers are invited which explore the processes adopted, the methods and designs involved and the analysis of the problem-tackling techniques employed. Papers should be up to 1,000 words.
Commentary
Commentary papers should be up to 3,000 words on a subject relating to articles in the journal. The Editor reserves the right to shorten these papers. Publication of these observations is also subject to limitations on space.
Research in Brief
Short reports (500-1500 words) on recent or ongoing research or items relating to research in psychiatric and mental health nursing. Papers should contain three to four subheadings (the aims, methods and findings of the research). A maximum of three references may be included but no tables or figures.
Integrated Media and Book Reviews
Authors considering submitting a book review should contact the Integrated Media and Book Review Editor in the first instance - those wishing to be a member of the book review panel should send in their contact details and areas of expertise and experience; those wanting to participate in the integrated review process should send in their ideas or review material for consideration. Please see the Editorial Information page for contact details.
Submission of a manuscript
Manuscripts should be submitted online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jpm. Full instructions and support are available on the site and a user ID and password can be obtained on the first visit. Support can be contacted by phone (+1 434 817 2040 ext. 167), e-mail (support@scholarone.com) or at http://blackwellsupport.custhelp.com. If you cannot submit online, please contact Professor Dawn Freshwater in the Editorial Office by telephone (+44 (0) 1202 962126) or by e-mail (jpmhn@bournemouth.ac.uk). The title page will be uploaded as a separate file from the main text to avoid identification of the author during the review process. The text should be double spaced on A4 (or nearest equivalent) with wide margins (5cm/1in), leaving the right hand margin unjustified and turning the hyphenation off. Use tabs, not spaces, to separate the data in tables and ensure all pages are clearly numbered.
A covering letter/e-mail must also be included with each submission stating, on behalf of all the authors, that the work has not been published and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. It should also confirm the contact details and e-mail address of the correspondence author, in case there is a problem with the electronic file. All papers will then be peer-reviewed. Authors should ensure they keep an up-to-date copy of their paper for reference.
NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell's Author Services Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
Style Guide
Title page
This should give: the title of the article, the names and initials of each author, the department and institution to which the work should be attributed, the name, address, telephone and fax numbers of the author for correspondence, proofs and a short title of 40 characters or less if the paper title exceeds this limit.
Absract
The abstract should be less than 200 words in length and should be followed by six keywords in alphabetical order for indexing purposes.
Main text
This should begin on a separate page, and include an introduction, methods, results and discussion. Abbreviations should be written in full at the beginning of a sentence. Footnotes should be avoided. Spellings should conform to those used in the Concise Oxford Dictionary. SI units should be used throughout and authors should refer to Units, Symbols and Abbreviations published by the Royal Society of Medicine.
References
We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.
EndNote reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.endnote.com/support/enstyles.asp
Reference Manager reference styles can be searched for here: http://www.refman.com/support/rmstyles.asp
Please ensure that references in the text exactly match those in the manuscript's reference list. If editing sections of text please ensure that any references that are affected are amended accordingly in the reference list.
In the text, cite the authors names followed by the date of publication e.g., Bowers & Thompson (1992). Where there are three or more authors, the first authors name followed by et al. will suffice, e.g. Kennard et al. (1993). Where more than one reference is cited they should be listed in chronological order. Authors should use the examples given below for referencing style. References to personal communications or unpublished results should be in the text only i.e. (A.C. Bowers & J.M. Thompson pers. comm.) or (A.C. Bowers unpubl. observ.).
Examples:
Bowers A.C. & Thompson J.M. (1992) Clinical Manual of Health Assessment, 4th edn., pp. 41-42, C.V. Mosby Yearbook, London

Authors' original materials Unless specifically requested by a society or individual author, hardcopy and electronic materials will be retained for no longer than two months following publication of each issue. Any hardcopy and electronic material should then be disposed of or recycled. This includes original artwork, hardcopy and any accompanying disks/cd roms. Any author wishing for any of their materials to be returned should alert the Production Editor via the Editorial Office at the submission stage, or at the latest to the Production Editor directly on receipt of proofs. No responsibility will be taken for author material being destroyed if there has been no indication given that it should be returned.

Figures and tables should be numbered consecutively and their positions indicated clearly in the text. Each should have an appropriate caption or legend that clearly describes it. In the full-text online edition of the journal, figure legends may be truncated in abbreviated links to the full screen version. Therefore, the first 100 characters of any legend should inform the reader of key aspects of the figure. Illustrations should be referred to in the text, e.g. as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc., in order of appearance.
Approval for the reproduction or modification of figures and tables published elsewhere must be obtained from the authors and publishers before submission of papers to the Journal.
