Instructions to Authors
Instructions for Authors
The Journal of the Textile Institute is an international peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor & Francis on behalf of the Textile Institute, in online and print editions.
Aims and Scope The Journal of the Textile Institute welcomes papers concerning research and innovation, reflecting the professional interests of the Textile Institute in science, engineering, economics, management and design related to the textile industry and the use of fibres in consumer and engineering applications. Papers may encompass anything in the range of textile activities, from fibre production through textile processes and machines, to the design, marketing and use of products. Papers may also report fundamental theoretical or experimental investigations, practical or commercial industrial studies and may relate to technical, economic, aesthetic, social or historical aspects of textiles and the textile industry.
Submission of Manuscripts All papers must be submitted in English, written in a concise and simple manner.
If authors require support to improve the standard of English in their article before submission, details of resources available to authors can be found at ./authors_journals_resources_full~db=al.
The preferred method of manuscript submission is online at the following URL: http://joti.edmgr.com. Authors will need to register with Editorial Manager prior to submitting any paper. If you are submitting to the journal for the first time, please click here for simple full instructions on how to submit your paper. If you have attempted to use these instructions, but are still having genuine difficulty with the system, manuscripts can be e-mailed to: joti@tandf.co.uk.
In order to facilitate our double-blind peer review process, authors should prepare and upload both of the following documents as part of their submission to the journal:
-
a complete version of the manuscript
-
a version that is complete but anonymous, from which all of the identifying information has been removed, eg. all references to the authors' names; any acknowledgements referencing their colleagues, institutions or funding bodies; any running headers of author names.
Authors who do not include all these elements as part of their submission will have their paper returned to them.
Please include full postal address as well as telephone/fax/e-mail details for the corresponding author, and ensure that all correspondence addresses are included.
The Journal of the Textile Institute considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that they have been submitted only to the Journal of the Textile Institute on this occasion and that they have not been published already, nor are they under consideration for publication or in press elsewhere. Authors who fail to adhere to this condition will be charged with all costs which Journal of the Textile Institute incurs and their papers will not be published.
Manuscripts Manuscripts of the following types are accepted: Research Papers - An original research document which reports results of major value to the Textile Community Notes - See below Book Reviews - A brief critical and unbiased evaluation of a current book, normally invited by the Editor. Correspondence - Communications based on previously published manuscripts
The typical length of manuscripts is between 5 and 10 pages of the Journal (3000-6000 words). Longer manuscripts are acceptable when there is a need for an in-depth presentation of the material. Manuscripts submitted are acceptable in the following file formats: Word document (.doc), WordPerfect, LaTeX (.tex), Rich Text Format (.rtf) or PostScript (.ps). These files will automatically be converted to a PDF file for the review process.
Notes can be defined further as a short paper of 1500-2000 words in length; the paper should report novel developments/ techniques or substantial improvements of existing methods. The format should include an introduction and discussion with results; also there should be no more than 4 figures/ tables, nor more than 10 references.
Abstract and Key Words An abstract of about 150 words must precede the main text of the manuscript and draw attention to its salient points. There should be 4-6 key words applicable to the content of the manuscript.
Illustrations and Figures All images that appear in the manuscript must also be supplied as an electronic file separate from the main manuscript, preferably in TIFF (.tiff), JPEG (.jpeg) or GIF (.gif); these will be converted into PDF format in Editorial Manager subject to a successful 'Art Work Quality Check' using Pre-print Manager software, to be approved by the Author prior to submission to the Journal Office. Photomicrographs should contain scale bars. Every figure must have an explanatory legend in addition to a figure number (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.). If illustrations are taken from a previously published work, it is the responsibility of the author to obtain the necessary written permission from the publisher concerned.
Tables Tables should be typed on separate pages again in a separate file from the main manuscript. Results already represented in diagrammatic form should not be given in the form of tables. Column headings should be brief. Tables should use tabs as column separators, not spaces. Please indicate in the manuscript the approximate position of each table.
Mathematical Formulae Mathematics should be typed within the text where possible. The order of nesting brackets will be [{()}]. Equations are numbered in parentheses to the right. They are referred to in the text as Equation 1, Equation 2, Equation 5a, etc.
Symbols and Abbreviations Use of symbols and abbreviations must in general conform to that of ISO 31: Specification for Quantities, Units and Symbols.
Units SI units must be used for all numeric data. Other common or frequently used units may be given in parentheses following the SI unit.
Review Process All submitted manuscripts are assessed by two independent referees, who will make recommendations as to the suitability of the manuscript for publication. The refereeing process is subject to a double-blind review, in which the referees remain anonymous to the authors, and the authors remain anonymous to the referees. All reviews are seen by the Editor, who makes the final decision. With the introduction of our online submission system the review process will remain the same, however we will hope to improve the time it takes to reach a decision on the paper.
Proofs Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for checking. Only typographical or factual errors may be changed at proof stage.
