About the journal

Strain is an international journal that contains contributions from leading-edge research on the measurement of the mechanical behaviour of structures and systems. Strain updates engineers and scientists with new developments in measurement and current research activities. The journal includes papers from all engineering disciplines that deal with material behaviour and degradation under load, structural design and measurement techniques. Although the thrust of the journal is experimental, numerical simulations and validation are included in the coverage.

The journal is an official publication of the the European Association for Experimental Mechanics www.eurasem.org

Strain welcomes papers that deal with novel work in the following areas:

experimental techniques

non-destructive evaluation techniques

numerical analysis, simulation and validation

residual stress measurement techniques

design of composite structures and components

impact behaviour of materials and structures

signal and image processing

transducer and sensor design

structural health monitoring

biomechanics

high temperature applications.

education and training

Application based papers with particular relevance to industry are welcome, for this purpose shorter 'technical note' style articles are encouraged. Papers that describe new approaches to education and training in strain measurement are also encouraged

Submission implies that the work has not been published elsewhere and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts should be in English and should contain no more than 4000 words for a full paper or 1500 words for a Technical Note or Case Study. They should not contain more than 10 figures for a full paper or four figures for a Technical Note or Case Study.

Manuscript Style

All sections of the typescript should be on one side of A4 paper, double-spaced and with 30mm margins. Pages should be numbered consecutively. Please number all lines (guidance can be given). Figures, tables and captions should be grouped together on separate sheets. A final copy of the manuscript will be required on disk. The Editor cannot consider for publication papers that depart substantially from these 'Instructions to Authors'.

Title Page

This should contain a concise title for the article, names and initials of each author, the department and institution to which the work should be attributed, the name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and email address of the corresponding author. If the title is more that 45 characters long a short running head title should be specified.

Abstract and Keywords

For all full papers, an abstract of not more than 200 words should accompany the manuscript. This should be followed by not more that five keywords in alphabetical order.

References

References should be cited in the order in which they appear in the text and indicated with a number in square brackets [1] in the text at the relevant point.

A detailed reference list should be supplied on a separate sheet, listed in the order that they appear in the manuscript. Journal and book titles should be written out in full. The following are examples of style:

Units, spellings and measurement

Système International (SI) units should be used. Spelling should conform to the Concise Oxford Dictionary.

Electronic artwork

Submission of figures as digital images on disk or some other storage medium is encouraged. Please save vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. half-tones) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Detailed information on our digital illustration standards is available at:
http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/authors/digill.asp?site=1

Illustrations

Always enclose a hard copy of a digitally supplied figure. Computer-generated hard-copy illustrations are acceptable only if they have been printed with a good-quality laser printer. The captions should be typed on a separate page at the end of the manuscript and not included in the text or under the illustrations. Illustrations should be referred to in the text as figures using Arabic numerals e.g., Fig. 1, Fig. 2 etc., in order of appearance. Each figure should be marked on the back of the hard copy in pencil with its appropriate number, together with the names of the author(s) and the title of the paper.

If they are essential to the understanding of the figure, use coarse tints. Illustrations should be provided to either single (83mm) or double column (175mm) width. Lettering should be sans serif and 2.3 mm in height. Lines should be at least 0.33mm wide in final size and symbols should be 2.3mm in width.

Photographs should be supplied as unmounted black and white, high-contrast prints. Labelling should be clearly indicated on an overlay or photocopy.

In the printed version of Strain figures appear in black and white as the standard format however colour figures are available at the rate of ?50 for the first figure and ?0 for each subsequent figure.

It is the policy of Strain for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork. Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is:

Submission of a paper to Strain will be taken to imply that it presents original, unpublished work, not under consideration for publication elsewhere. By submitting a manuscript, authors agree to assign the Publisher exclusive licence to publish their paper if and when the article is published. To enable this each paper should be accompanied by an exclusive licence form.  It is a condition of publication that authors grant the Publisher the exclusive licence to publish all articles including abstracts. Papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless the exclusive licence to publish has been granted. To assist authors an exclusive licence form is available from the editorial office or by clicking here

Authors are themselves responsible for obtaining permission to reproduce copyright material from other sources.

NEW: Online production tracking is now available for your article through Blackwell’s Author Services.
Author Services enables authors to track their article - once it has been accepted - through the production process to publication online and in print. Authors can check the status of their articles online and choose to receive automated e-mails at key stages of production. The author will receive an e-mail with a unique link that enables them to register and have their article automatically added to the system. Please ensure that a complete e-mail address is provided when submitting the manuscript. Visit
www.blackwellpublishing.com/bauthor for more details on online production tracking and for a wealth of resources including FAQs and tips on article preparation, submission and more.
