Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

Authors should submit four copies of their manuscript and figures (all of good quality) to: Professor Crispian Scully CBE, Oral Oncology, Eastman Dental Institute of Oral Healthcare Sciences, University College London, University of London, 256 Grays Inn Road, London WC1X 8LD, UK; Tel: 44-207-915-1038; Fax: 44-207-915-1232.

Please ensure that manuscripts are well packaged for international postage and in a covering letter, which should be signed by all the authors, clearly identify the person responsible for editorial correspondence (address, telephone and fax numbers and E-mail address).

Details of any previous or concurrent submissions should be given. It is also useful to include any information to support the submission (e.g. original or confirmatory date, relevance, topicality) or whether any text, figures or tables can be omitted. For colour figures, authors should agree to pay the cost of reproduction (details of costs available from Author Services).

Authors should submit on a separate sheet the names and contact details (including e-mail addresses) of up to three reviewers who have the necessary expertise to evaluate the submitted manuscript, although, the final decision for which reviewers are assigned is made by the Editor.

All contributions will be acknowledged immediately, with a reference number for enquiries.

Previous Publications:
Submission of a manuscript implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. No substantial part of the manuscript may have been or may be published elsewhere. This restriction does not apply to abstracts or press reports published in connection with scientific meetings. For advice on previous or simultaneous publications, contact the office of the Editor.

Manuscript Preparation
General:
Manuscripts should be written in English.
Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required.
The corresponding author must be identified (include full postal address, Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible.
For the initial submission of manuscripts for consideration, hardcopies are sufficient. An electronic version of the manuscript should accompany the final version if the manuscript is accepted.
Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since neither Publisher nor Editor accepts responsibility for damage or loss of manuscripts or figures.
The journal does not guarantee to return rejected manuscripts. One copy and all glossy artwork are stored for a month after the rejection date before disposal. Accepted manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.
The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity.
Manuscript length:
Reviews, up to 5000 words, abstract in structured format up to 150 words
Original papers, up to 2500 words, abstract in structured format up to 150 words, up to 30 references
Short communications, up to 1000 words, brief abstract up to 100 words, 2 tables/figures, up to 10 references
Case reports, up to 500 words, brief abstract up to 100 words, 1 table/figure, up to 10 references
Letters, up to 500 words, no abstract, 1 table/figure, up to 10 references
As a rule, there are about 250 words on one A4 page of double-spaced typing.
Abstract:
The abstract should include the methods in brief and the main findings and conclusions.
Keywords:
Include up to 10 keywords from the Medical Subject Headings from Index Medicus.
Ethics:
For clinical trials, details of ethics committee approval and the type of informed consent should be stated. Patients' and volunteers' names, initials and hospital numbers should not be used.
Text:
Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text (for manuscripts containing research data, generally follow the order: Introduction, Patients [or Subjects or Materials] and Methods, Results and Discussion), Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.
Abbreviations and units:
Generally, avoid abbreviations in the title and abbreviating single words. Otherwise explain all abbreviations at first mention in the abstract and text, except for: DNA, RNA, AIDS and HIV. Standard SI abbreviations for units do not need to be spelt out.
Drug names:
Use generic names for drugs. Commercial names may be included in parentheses at first mention in the text. Complicated drug names or regimes may be abbreviated, with the abbreviation in parentheses after first mention.
References:
In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Rogers[1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the manuscript. All publications cited in the text should be presented in the list of references. References should be given in the following form:
[1] Rogers SN, Lowe D, Brown JS, Vaughen ED. A comparison between the university of washington head and neck disease-specific measure and the medical short form 36, EORTC QQQ-C33 and EORTC head and neck 35. Oral Oncol 1998;34(5):361-72.
[2] Gullick WJ, Venter DJ. The c-erbB2 and its expression in human tumors. In: Waxman J, Sikora K, editors. The molecular biology of cancer. Oxford: Blackwell Scientific, 1989. p. 38-53.
[3] Scully C, Cawson RA. Medical Problems in Dentistry. Oxford: Butterworth-Heinemann. 1998 Journal titles should be abbreviated as in Index Medicus. If there are six or fewer authors they should all be listed; if there are seven or more, the first three authors should be listed, followed by et al.
Illustrations:
All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)" and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author's name. All figures are to have a caption supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white manuscript produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Where colour figures are required the author will be charged at the current colour printing costs.
Tables:
Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Electronic submission
Authors should submit an electronic copy of their manuscript with the final version of the manuscript if accepted for publication. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/disksub or from Author Services at Elsevier.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored manuscripts) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any others may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed. Proofs are to be returned to the Log-in Department, Elsevier, Stover Court, Bampfylde Street, Exeter, Devon EX1 2AH, UK.
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints plus a single copy of the issue will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
Copyright
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm or any other reproductions of a similar nature, and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
