Overview

Every day, the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) takes action to help companies in the plastics industry succeed. How? By spreading knowledge, strengthening skills and promoting plastics. Employing these vital strategies, SPE has helped the plastics industry thrive for over 60 years. In the process, we've developed a 25,000-member network of leading engineers and other plastics professionals, including technicians, salespeople, marketers, retailers and representatives from tertiary industries.

Aims and Scope

Journal of Vinyl and Additive Technology is a peer-reviewed technical publication for new work in the fields of polymer modifiers and additives, vinyl polymers and selected review papers. Over half of all papers in JVAT are based on technology of additives and modifiers for all classes of polymers: thermoset polymers and both condensation and addition thermoplastics. Papers on vinyl technology include PVC additives.

Instructions to Authors

Author Guidelines

MISSON STATEMENT

The Journal of Vinyl & Additive Technology publishes papers on all of the technical aspects of vinyl polymers, including vinyl additives as well as other vinyl topics, and ranging from basic research to applied research and development. The journal also publishes papers on the various technical aspects of all types of additives for polymers that are not in the vinyl category. Most of the papers describe new work, but critical reviews of the literature appear occasionally. Prospective authors are urged to consult recent issues of the journal for guidance on formatting and writing style.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION INFORMATION

Journal of Vinyl & Additive Technology is pleased to offer authors web-based manuscript submission and peer-review. Submit your manuscripts online at http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/vnl . Manuscripts submitted online are received on the day of submission and quickly assigned to reviewers. Through individual Author Centers on this website, authors can view the status of their manuscripts as they progress through the review process. Notification of the disposition of each manuscript will be sent by E-mail to the corresponding author on the day of decision. To submit your manuscript online:

·                                 Go to the submission website

·                                 If you do not already have an account, then create one by clicking on the "Create an Account" button. You then will be able to submit and monitor the progress of your manuscripts. If you have forgotten your password, click "Forget your password," to have your account information sent to your e-mail address.

·                                 Follow the instructions carefully. Submit the complete manuscript with text (including references), tables, and figures as separate files. You do not need to mail paper copies of your manuscript.

·                                 At the end of a successful submission, a confirmation screen with a manuscript number will appear, and you will receive an E-mail confirming that the manuscript has been received by the journal. If these two messages do not appear, then go into your Author Center and make sure that you have clicked on the “Submit” button or contact technical support at support@scholarone.com .

·                                 There is no limit on paper length, and the journal assess no page or publication charges. Submission will be taken to imply that the paper has not been previously published, that it is not being considered elsewhere for publication, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in any language, without the consent of the editor or publisher. Authors must agree to transfer copyright to the publisher when an article is accepted for publication. Unless notified to the contrary by the authors, the publisher assumes that the act of submitting the article signifies the authors’ agreement to such copyright transfer to the publisher.

All manuscripts must be typed using double spacing and a 10 or 12 point font. Figures and tables should be appended at the end, each appearing on a separate page. Each manuscript should include:

A separate title page, headed by a concise, meaningful title (no abbreviations). This page should provide:

The name and affiliations of each contributing author at the time the paper was prepared.

Acknowledgment of any prior oral presentation and original source of the material.

A separate abstract page, consisting of a single paragraph, text only, of 100-200 words to be headed by the title and the names and addresses of the authors. Define any abbreviations for substances or methods (such as ABS, SAXS, etc.).

A list of references, on a separate page at the end of the text, numbered in order of text citation. The references are to be abbreviated in the form shown below, using the names of all authors preceded by initials.

Within the text, the reference citations are typed in brackets in line with the main copy (no superscripts or subscripts), thus:

According to Cohen et al. [1] …

In the list of references the general style is as follows:

For periodicals:
1. J.F. Agassant, A. Fortin, and Y. Demay, Polym. Eng. Sci. , 34 , 110 (1994).

The journal name is italicized, the volume number is boldfaced, and the year is placed in parentheses. The issue number is given only when needed for identification. The article name is eliminated unless the reference is unclear without it.

For books:
9. J.M. Dealy and K.F. Wissburn, Melt Rheology and Its Role in Plastic Processing , Van Nostrand Reinhold (1990).(Include the state or country when the city is not identifiable.) (Add page number if appropriate.)

The title is to be spelled out in full and italicized. When necessary, include name of chapter or section within quotation marks.

For patents:
12. R. Columbo, U.S. Patent, 2820,249 (1958).

As necessary, add a nomenclature list before the references, identifying symbols and abbreviations. Footnotes are to be avoided.

Equations, numbered and typed in the appropriate place in the text.

Tables, each typed on a separate page, with a heading, and numbered with Arabic numerals that correspond to the order in which they are cited in the text. The tables should be inserted in the manuscript after the references and before the figures.

Important : English spelling is standard U.S., not British.

Figures should be numbered in the order in which they are mentioned in the text. All figure parts should be labeled a, b, c, etc. Indicate the figure number and labels on the front of each figure, but not within the figure frame . Indicate the orientation on the back of each figure. Symbols, letters, and numbers must be legible after reduction, at which time, the smallest data points should not be less than 1.5- to 1.7-mm high. Images need to be cropped and all irrelevant parts removed. Legends are to be typed together on a separate sheet of paper and should also be included under the corresponding figure. Because of the high cost of color printing, we can only print color figures if authors cover the expense. The cost is $950 for the first page of color; $500 for each page thereafter.

Electronic submission of manuscripts.

Electronic submissions of text must be in MS Word format. LaTex, Postscript, ASCII or PDF will not be accepted. Author-defined macros are unacceptable. Authors preparing disks on Macintosh computers should not use the Fast Save option. Symbols and special characters should not be created graphically; instead, use the character set provided in your word processor.

Electronic submission of graphics to publisher, post-acceptance. Images submitted electronically must be in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) or Encapsulated PostScript (EPS). They may be submitted from either a MS-DOS or Macintosh system. PowerPoint figures are acceptable, but are not preferred for best quality in print. If figures are in Adobe Photoshop or EPS, it is recommended to use Aldus Freehand or QuarkXPress. Figures prepared in Word, Excel, Microsoft Publisher, Lotus 123, Power Point and Corel Draw are not acceptable as digital files. If your files have been prepared in one of these formats and cannot be converted, you will be required to mail high quality hard copy figures. Failure to comply with these electronic submission procedures may result in a delay in publication. All images must be saved and submitted in final size. The final figure sizes are: 1 column = 3-in. (8.25-cm) wide, 1.5 column = 5-in. (13-cm) wide, 2 columns = 6-in. (17.15-cm) wide. Figures should not exceed 8-in. (21.6-cm) in height. All cropping and manipulation must be completed before the images are submitted to the publisher.

Resolutions of scanned images are as follows: Line art is to be scanned at 1200 dots per inch (dpi). Halftones are to be scanned at 300 dpi. To ensure good reproduction on press, the minimum black value on a halftone scan (high-light) should be 4% black. The maximum value (shadow) should be no higher than 95%. Avoid the use of fine lines for graphs and charts. Use only Adobe Type 1 fonts in creating images, and limit the number of fonts used. Do not reletter images in Photoshop. If relettering must be done, import the image into either Freehand or QuarkXPress and reletter, then make an EPS file. Make sure all scanned images are "clean." Look for and clean up dust specks, scratches, tape marks, and anything that is not part of the actual image. Files generated in Freehand should be saved in EPS format.

To ensure that your digital graphics are suitable for print purposes, please go to Rapid Inspector TM at http://rapidinspector.cadmus.com/wi/index.jsp. This free, stand-alone software application will help you to inspect and verify illustrations right on your computer.
