About the journal

Journal of The Franklin Institute

     Engineering and Applied Mathematics

Editors-in-Chief:
M. Aburdene, R. Madan
See editorial board for all editors information

The Journal of The Franklin Institute has an established reputation for publishing high-quality papers in the field of engineering and applied mathematics. Its current focus is on information and communication systems, signal processing, wavelets, sensor fusion, computer and communication networks, neural networks, control theory, nonlinear dynamics, fractals and chaos theory.

The editors and the editorial board encourage authors to put forth evolving new topics for publication provided they fall within the current scope of the journal as noted above. Special focus issues with a strong theoretical foundation in newly evolving topics are planned for the future.

All submitted papers are peer-reviewed. The journal will publish original research papers and research review papers of substance. Papers are judged upon possible lasting value, which has been and continues to be the strength of Journal of The Franklin Institute.

Instructions to Authors

Papers are judged upon possible lasting value, which has been and continues to be the strength of the Journal of The Franklin Institute.

Brief Communications are short papers of no more than four to five journal pages, including figures. These will be accepted only if in the opinion of the editors they are of exceptional interest and urgency.

Submission of Manuscripts: Four single-sided copies of the manuscript, in English, should be sent to: Managing Editor, Journal of The Franklin Institute, 222 North 20th Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103-1194, USA. The written assurance of the author(s) is required that no abstract, report or copy of the manuscript has simultaneously been submitted for publication to any other journal. Upon acceptance of a manuscript, the Editors reserve the right to make minor changes in text to conform to the overall Journal style. If the paper appeared in a preliminary form in a conference proceedings, this must be clearly indicated in both your cover letter and a footnote on the title page. Complete addresses (including e-mail addresses and fax and phone numbers) should be provided for all authors. If your submission is not acknowledged within six weeks, please contact the Managing Editor at journal@fi.edu to verify its receipt.

Web Submission Site: Authors are encouraged to submit their papers electronically by using online manuscript submission at http://www.elsubmit.com/esubmit/fi. Authors interested in online submission are requested to go to the website and upload their manuscript and its associated artwork. An electronic (PDF) proof is generated and the reviewing process is carried out using that PDF. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the PDF is suitable for reviewing. This will also allow the preferred position of placement to be indicated; however please note that due to journal conventions, it may not be possible to meet all requirements for placement of artwork. Moreover, the PDF file may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards. Authors and editors send and receive all correspondence by email via the website and no paper correspondence is performed.

Proofs and offprints: Each corresponding author will receive 25 complementary offprints. An offprint order form will be supplied to the author once the paper has been received at Elsevier from the Editor. Page proofs will be sent to the authors for checking. Any corrections to proofs must be restricted to printer's errors. Other than these any substantial changes at this stage will be charged to the author.

Authors should pay particular attention to the following:
Title: Should be brief, specific, informative, and appropriate for indexing.
Abstract: An abstract not exceeding 250 words that summarizes the principal techniques and conclusions of the manuscript in relation to known results must accompany each manuscript. Because the abstract must be able to stand independently, mathematical formulas and bibliographic references should be kept to a minimum; bibliographic references must be written out in full (not given by number).
Key words: Place at least four key words below the abstract. Key words are essential for the indexing and accessibility of your article.
Special Symbols: Write all equations and formulae clearly; noting that if equations are hand-written, all letters must be clearly printed and identified, and number equations consecutively at the right-hand side of the page. Poorly written equations cannot be read clearly and therefore cause printer's errors; the charge for correcting these errors will be made to the author(s). Place superscripts and subscripts accurately; avoid superscripts that may be confused with exponents. Tables and Graphs: Include a caption for each. Avoid duplication and superfluous data. Substitute a few typical results for lengthy tables where practical.
Illustrations: All illustrations must be of professional quality with no handwritten elements. Illustrations must be numbered consecutively and cited in the text. If your article is accepted for publication, Elsevier must be supplied with camera-ready artwork. Hand-drawn artwork will not be accepted. Color illustrations will be published at the author's expense.
References: List separately at the end of the paper, number consecutively, and use appropriate number to locate references in text. Provide complete information as follows:

(1) G. Di Hu, G. Da Hu, Some simple stability criteria of neutral delay-differential systems, Appl. Math. Comput. 80 (1996) 257-271.
(2) R. L. Murray, Nuclear Energy, Pergamon Press, Oxford, 1993.

Electronic submissions: Authors who wish to send their contribution on computer disk should send a hard copy in the first instance. When the paper is accepted they will be asked to submit the final version on disk. Details of disk submission can be found at http://authors.elsevier.com.

Copyright. All authors must sign the Transfer of Copyright agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd. and The Franklin Institute to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but authors retain their proprietary rights.
