About the journal

Journal of Statistical Mechanics: Theory and Experiment (JSTAT) is a multi-disciplinary, peer-reviewed international journal created by the International School for Advanced Studies and Institute of Physics Publishing (IOP). JSTAT's philosophy mirrors that of its successful sister journals, Journal of High Energy Physics (JHEP) and Journal of Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics (JCAP).

JSTAT brings together cutting-edge research in all aspects of statistical physics particularly emphasising experimental work that impacts on fundamental aspects of the subject. JSTAT's Board of Editors and Advisory Board features first-class scientists to guarantee high quality articles through peer review.

JSTAT offers web-only submission and aims for rapid publication. One year on from publication of the first issue the average time from submission to Editor's first decision is 37 days for papers and 26 days for letters. From submission to publication the average is 75 days and 66 days for papers and letters respectively.

Being an online journal, JSTAT offers authors the possibility to publish large data sets, tables and figures, as well as movies and other multimedia attachments (the use of colour is encouraged for these).

To submit a paper please connect to the editorial web site. There will be no page charges to authors.

A new alternative submission website has been set up at the University of Bonn. If the JSTAT Editorial website at SISSA is ever unavailable, authors can now send new submissions (not resubmissions) and browse the journal's instruction pages at jstat.uni-bonn.de. If, however, this website is accessed when the Editorial website at SISSA is available, authors will be automatically redirected to the SISSA website.

Access to full-text articles is free of charge for articles published in 2004 ensuring high visibility within the community. For 2005, a low cost subscription rate has been introduced for institutional access.

Free to developing and low income countries
Access to the content of JSTAT is free to selected developing and low-income countries, please click here for more information.

This title and other journals on the IOP website are available free of charge to participating developing countries through the EIFL program.

JSTAT News
Starting in January 2006 and continuing throughout 2006 a collection of topical articles on `Experiments in complex and magnetic materials' will be published in JSTAT. These articles will appear within the regular monthly issues, but will remain open access in order to promote experimental works in the statistical physics community. Authors wishing to make submissions to this collection should visit jstat.sissa.it and follow the instructions. After uploading the files authors are kindly requested to inform the JSTAT Editorial Office (jstat-eo@jstat.sissa.it) that their submission is intended for this collection.

Instructions to Authors

All submissions and refereeing are handled by the JSTAT Editorial Office at SISSA. To submit a paper to JSTAT, please connect to the editorial web site.

A submission to JSTAT must be the original work of the author(s) and it should be substantial and significant in content. Articles submitted to JSTAT must not have been published in other refereed journals, or be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except as an abstract or as part of a published lecture, review or thesis). Publication must have been approved by all co-authors (if any).

Papers must address one or more of the subject areas of JSTAT. The criteria for acceptance are scientific quality, originality, relevance and comprehension. Length should be appropriate to the information presented. Editors are asked to apply a strict quality filter in selecting papers for publication.

Letters are intended for especially important results which can be communicated in a short way (not more than four pages). A short article is not a letter. A letter can be either self-contained or can be an announcement of results the full details of which have yet to appear.

Editors and referees operate anonymously, but they can reveal their identity to the author if they so wish. In the event of major disagreements among Editors, or between an Editor and an author, the Advisory Board will be consulted in order to resolve the dispute.

The Advisory and Editorial Boards jointly review JSTAT's scientific policy and ensure the scientific quality of accepted papers. Editors are in charge of assigning referees to each submitted paper and for making the final publication decision. There are many Editors in order to provide comprehensive coverage across JSTAT's topic areas.
