About the journal

Ionics is publishing original results in the fields of science and technology of ionic motion. This includes theoretical, experimental and practical work on electrolytes, electrode, ionic/electronic interfaces, corrosion, galvanic cells, e.g. for thermodynamic and kinetic studies, batteries, fuel cells, sensors and electrochromics. Fast solid ionic conductors are presently providing new opportunities in view of several advantages, in addition to conventional liquid electrolytes.

In addition to regular length papers, short communications ("Letters") are being published to allow rapid information of the scientific community about important findings, without need of extensive descriptions.

Depending on the progress in various areas of Ionics, also summary reports and reviews will be considered for publication.

Instructions to Authors
Instructions for authors
Ionics
International Journal of Ionics The Science and Technology of Ionic Motion

1 Legal Requirements
The author(s) guarantee(s) that the manuscript will not be published elsewhere in any language without the consent of the copyright owners, that the rights of third parties will not be violated, and that the publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Authors wishing to include figures or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Manuscripts must be accompanied by the "Copyright Transfer Statement". The form can be obtained from springer.com/journal/11581.
2 Open Choice Publication
In addition to the normal publication process (whereby an article is submitted to the journal and access to that article is granted to customers who have purchased a subscription), Springer now provides an alternative publishing option: Springer Open Choice. A Springer Open Choice article receives all the benefits of a regular "subscription-based" article, but in addition is made available publicly through Springer’s online platform SpringerLink. To publish via SpringerOpenChoice, upon acceptance please visit www.springer.com/openchoice to complete the relevant order form and provide the required payment information. Payment must be received in full before publication or articles will be published as regular subscription-model articles. We regret that Springer Open Choice cannot be ordered for published articles.
3 Editorial Procedure
Authors should submit their manuscripts to the Editor online to facilitate even quicker and more efficient processing. Electronic submission substantially reduces the editorial processing and reviewing times and shortens overall publication times.
Please log directly onto the site http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ionics and upload your manuscript following the on-screen instructions. If you have any questions please contact the Editorial office (e-mail: koch@ionics.org) When online access is unavailable, authors are asked to submit their manuscript in PDF-format to the editor for peer review or -exceptionally- in print (a triple set is asked for). The final accepted manuscript should then be submitted in print, together with one set of illustrations and in addition to electronic submission (one file including text and figures), preferably in word, rtf or latex format.
4 Manuscript Preparation
To help you prepare your manuscript, Springer offers a template that can be used with Winword 7 (Windows 95), 97, 2000, and Word for Macintosh. For details see point 5. Manuscripts may also be written in LaTeX for which Springer-Verlag offers a macropackage (see Sect. 5). All manuscripts are subject to copy editing.

Title Page

A concise and informative title
The affiliation(s) and address(es) of the author(s)
The e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers of the corresponding author

Abstract
Each paper must be preceded by an abstract presenting the most important results and conclusions in no more than 150 words.

Keywords
Up to 5 keywords are to be supplied. They should not simply be taken from the title, but should represent the content of the whole article and be characteristic of the terminology used within the particular field of study. should be supplied after the Abstract for indexing purposes.

Abbreviations, Formulae, Units
Abbreviations Should be defined at first mention in the abstract and again in the main body of the text and used consistently thereafter.

Chemical formulae and names must be unambiguous and in accordance with the relevant international recommendations, cf. "IUPAC (1993) Quantities, Units and Symbols Trade, Blackwell Scientific, Oxford". Trade names should be avoided.

Nomenclature. Insofar as possible, authors should use systematic names similar to those used by Chemical Abstract Service or IUPAC. A genus/species name should be in italics (underlined once in the typescript) and written out in full at first mention.

Formulae, symbols and all subscripts, superscripts, Greek letters and other characters must be legible and carefully checked. Standard mathematical notation should be used:
- Single letters that denote mathematical constants, variables, and unknown quantities should be set in italic type in text and in equations.
- Numerals, operators, and punctuation should be set in Roman type (upright), as are commonly defined functions or abbreviations, e.g., cos, det, e or exp, lim, log, max, min, sin, tan, d (for derivative) should also be upright.
- Vectors, tensors, and matrices should be set in an alternative typeface such as bold italic or simply bold.

Property Substances and Materials. The correct designation and the manufacturer’s name should be given. Where the manufacturer is not well known, the address should also be included.

Units and abbreviations. Please adhere to internationally agreed standards such as those adopted by the commission of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) or defined by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO). Metric SI units should be used throughout except where non-SI units are more common [e.g. litre (l) for volume].

MainText
The Introduction should state the purpose of the investigation and give a short review of the pertinent literature.

The Results section should describe the outcome of the study. Data should be presented as concisely as possible, if appropriate in the form of tables or figures, although very large tables should be avoided.

The Discussion should be an interpretation of the results and their significance with reference to work by other authors.

Conclusion should stress the major findings, outlining their significance and indicating any possible future applications.

Acknowledgements. These should be as brief as possible. Any grant that requires acknowledgement should be mentioned. The names of funding organizations should be written in full.

Essential footnotes to the text should be numbered consecutively and placed at the bottom of the page to which they refer.

References
The list of References should only include works that are cited in the text and that have been published or accepted for publication. Personal communications should only be mentioned in the text. If available the DOI can be added at the end of the reference in question.
Citations in the text should be identified by numbers in square brackets, and the list of references at the end of the paper should be listed in numerical order. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the American Chemical Society style. References with correct punctuation should be styled as follows:

Journal articles:
1. Thangadurai V, Schwenzel J, Weppner W (2005) Ionics 11:11-23

Books:
2. Britz D (2005) Digital Simulation in Electrochemistry, 3rd edn. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York

Multiauthor books:
3. Houston JE (2004) Interfacial Force Microscopy. In: Bushan B, Fuchs H, Hosaka S (eds) Applied Scanning Probe Methods. Springer, Berlin Heidelberg New York, pp. 41-115

A paper published online but not (yet) in print can be cited using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). The DOI should be added at the end of the reference in question.
Example:
Nagata M, Kitazima I (2006) Coll Polym Sci 284. DOI 10.1007/s00396-005-1393-3

Equations
Should be numbered sequentially by arabic numbers in parenthesis. The words equation and equations should be abbreviated Eq. and Eqs.

Illustrations andTables
All figures (photographs, graphs or diagrams) and tables should be cited in the text, and each numbered consecutively throughout. Lowercase letters (a, b etc.) should be used to identify figure parts. If illustrations are supplied with uppercase labeling, lowercase letters will still be used in the figure legends and citations.

Line drawings. Please submit good-quality prints. The inscriptions should be clearly legible.

Half-tone illustrations (black and white and color). Please submit well-contrasted photographic prints with the top indicated on the back. Magnification should be indicated by scale bars.

Color illustrations will be accepted; however, publication will only be free of charge to the authors if the use of color is scientifically justified. Otherwise the author will be expected to make contribution (950 ? 1150 US $, plus 16% VAT) towards the extra costs, irrespective of the number of color figures. All color illustrations will be published in color within the electronic version. But please consider that color figures appear in black and white within the printed version.

Size of figures. The figures should either match the width of the column (8.6 cm) or be 13.1 cm or 17.6 cm wide. The maximum length is 23.6 cm.

Figure legends must be brief, self-sufficient explanations of the illustrations. The legends should be placed at the end of the text. The words figure and figures should be abbreviated as Fig. and Figs.

Tables should have a title and a legend explaining any abbreviation used in that table. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript lower-case letters (or asterisks for significance values and other statistical data).
5 Electronic Submission
Text and figures must be sent as separate files. Please send only the final version of the article as accepted by the editors.

Layout guidelines
1. Use a normal, plain font (e.g., Times Roman) for text.
Other style options:
?for textual emphasis use italic types.
?for special purposes, such as for mathematical vectors, use boldface type.
2. Use the automatic page numbering function to number the pages.
3. Do not use field functions.
4. For indents use tab stops or other commands, not the space bar.
5. Use the table functions of your word processing program, not spreadsheets, to make tables.
6. Use the equation editor of your word processing program or MathType for equations.
7. Place any figure legends or tables at the end of the article.
8. Submit all figures as separate files and do not integrate them within the text.

Data formats
Word. Save your file in two formats:
1. Text: RTF (Rich Text Format) or Microsoft Word compatible formats
Figures: EPS or TIFF.
2. PDF (a single PDF file including text, tables and figures). Make sure that all fonts are embedded

LaTex
The electronic version should include the original source (including all style files and figures) and a PostScript version of the compiled submission. Authors who prepare their papers with LaTeX are encouraged to use Springer’s macro package for this journal, available at springer.com
springer.com/journal/11581

llustrations
The preferred figure formats are EPS for vector graphics exported from a drawing program and always contain a preview in TIFF of the figure. The file name (one file for each figure) should be included in the text and not in the figure file.
Scan resolution: Scanned line drawings should be digitized with a minimum resolution of 800 dpi relative to the final figure size. For digital halftones, 300 dpi is usually
sufficient.
Color illustrations: Store color illustrations as RGB (8 bits per channel) in TIFF format.
Vector graphics: Fonts used in the vector graphics must be included. Please do not draw with hairlines. The minimum line width is 0.2 mm (i.e., 0.567 pt) relative to the final size.
Chemical Structures should be submitted using ChemDraw or ISISDraw in the original format as well as in eps format.
6 Electronic Supplementary Material
Electronic supplementary material (ESM) for an article in the journal will be published in SpringerLink provided the material is:
submitted to the Editors in electronic form together with the paper and is subject to peer review
accepted by the journals Editors

ESM may consist of
?information that cannot be printed: animations, video clips, sound recordings
?information that is more convenient in electronic form: sequences, spectral data, etc.
?large original data that relate to the paper, e.g. additional tables, illustrations (color and black & white), etc. After acceptance by the journals Editors ESM will be published as received from the author in the online version only. Reference will be given in the printed version.
7 Proofreading
Authors should make their proof corrections on a printout of the pdf file supplied, checking that the text is complete and that all figures and tables are included. After online publication, further changes can only be made in the form of an Erratum, which will be hyperlinked to the article. The author is entitled to formal corrections only.
Substantial changes in content, e.g. new results, corrected values, title and authorship are not allowed without the approval of the responsible editor. In such a case please contact the editors before returning the proofs to the publisher.
8 Offprints, Free Copy
25 offprints of each contribution are supplied free of charge. If you wish to order additional offprints you must return the order form with the corrected proofs.
