About the journal
![Supplement 1, 2010 Supplement](http://www.annfammed.org/misc/afmsupp1.10cover.jpg)
The Annals of Family Medicine is a new peer-reviewed research journal to meet the needs of scientists, practitioners, policymakers, and the patients and communities they serve.
Mission The Annals of Family Medicine is dedicated to advancing knowledge essential to understanding and improving health and primary care. The Annals supports a learning community of those who generate and use information about health and generalist health care.
Editorial Focus The Annals seeks to identify and address important questions in health and the provision of patient-centered, prioritized, high-quality health care. We welcome clinical, biomedical, social and health services research. The Annals publishes original research, methodology, and theory, as well as essays from reflective clinicians, patients, families, communities, and policymakers. We publish selected systematic reviews that build on current knowledge to advance new theory, methods, or research directions. The Annals seeks manuscripts that use and develop rigorous quantitative and/or qualitative methods, and manuscripts with application to practice, theory development, and policy. We encourage practice-based research and research that bridges disciplinary boundaries.
TRACK Discussion Forum The Annals actively engages those affected by the research it publishes through online interactive discussions. These discussions, called TRACK (Topical Response to the Annals Community of Knowledge), offer all readers the opportunity to comment on articles published in the Annals. We welcome comments from authors, clinicians, patients, families, policy makers, researchers, and others. We also offer Open Forum, an online discussion forum for the presentation of new ideas or discussion of other topics of interest. A regular editorial feature, On TRACK, synthesizes these discussions, in order to integrate diverse perspectives and different ways of knowing. Each article contains a link to TRACK. A link to Open Forum is available on the home page.
Supplements The Annals publishes a limited number of supplements. Supplements must be in keeping with the mission and focus of the Annals and must undergo the editorial and peer review process. We do not accept supplements that are funded by any organization that has a financial interest in the outcomes of the work reported.
Special Reports The Annals publishes special reports of value to the communities it serves, including:
- Evidence-based clinical practice guidelines
- Reports from sponsoring and other organizations
- Policy statements from sponsoring and other organizations
Special Reports undergo the editorial and peer review process before acceptance for publication.
Sponsoring Organizations The Annals of Family Medicine is a collaborative effort of six family medicine organizations:
The Annals publishes news and announcements from its sponsoring organizations.
Instructions to Authors
The Annals of Family Medicine publishes in print and online six times a year. The journal is indexed in a number of databases, including MEDLINE, MEDLARS, PsychINFO, Science Citation Index Expanded and Current Contents/Clinical Medicine.
We encourage a variety of contributions: The Annals welcomes manuscripts from authors with new knowledge to contribute to understanding and improving health and primary care. The Annals includes a broad range of content, from theory development to rigorous quantitative and qualitative research, to the application of research in practice, to the development and implementation of policy. We particularly welcome work that bridges boundaries between disciplines. We support efforts to bring research to practice and practice to research.
- Original Research. Reports of clinical, biomedical, behavioral, social, health-services, and policy research.
- Methodology. Development of methods to advance understanding.
- Theory. Development and testing of explanatory models.
- Selected Reviews. Critical syntheses that advance theory, methods, or identify new research directions. The Annals does not usually publish clinical updates, expert reviews, or case reports.
- Essays. Reflections from clinicians, patients, families, communities, and policymakers.
