About the journal
Xenotransplantation, which is published bi-monthly, will provide its readership with rapid communication of new findings in the field of organ and tissue transplantation across species barriers. Unsolicited contributions of full length and brief communications dealing with both basic and applied studies in this field will be considered for publication pending scientific review to assure high quality. In addition, review articles of timely subjects will be solicited by the editors.

The work shall not be published elsewhere in any language without the written consent of the publisher. The articles published in this journal are protected by copyright, which covers translation rights and the exclusive right to reproduce and distribute all of the articles printed in the journal. Types of papers published
Commentaries consist of brief reviews and opinions on a topic of interest in xenotransplantation, and should generally not exceed 1,000 words. The editors welcome proposals for topics warranting a commentary.
Reviews are comprehensive but concise reviews of topics of interest. There is no absolute limit on length, but normally they should not exceed 3,000 words.
Rapid Communications are original papers of high originality and interest. If submission as a Rapid Communication is considered appropriate by the editors, these papers will be reviewed quickly and, if accepted, published in the next available issue. Non-acceptance as a Rapid Communication does not preclude publication as a regular Original Paper.
Original Papers are full-length reports of completed research relevant to xenotransplantation.
Brief Communications are brief or preliminary reports not exceeding 2500 words, including the abstract. They should be organized in the same way as full-length Original Papers, but the abstract should be no longer than 250 words. The number of references, tables and figures, should be compatible with the length of the paper.
Letters to the Editor that comment on any topic of relevance to xenotransplantation should not normally exceed 500 words and should have a very limited number of references with only a single table or figure, if necessary.
Book Reviews should normally not exceed 500 words.
Manuscripts Authors submitting a paper do so on the understanding that the work has not been published before, is not being considered for publication elsewhere, and has been read and approved by all authors. Articles should ideally not exceed 3 printed pages (approx. 700 words per page). Additional pages must be paid for at a rate of US $115 per page. Manuscripts, including tables and figures, should be sent in triplicate. The journal does not hold itself responsible for loss or damage to mailed manuscripts, or for statements made by contributors. (1) Manuscripts may be mailed to either of the Editorial Offices listed above. (2) The paper should be submitted in English. (3) Type the manuscript (and legends, references, etc.) with wide margins and double-spaced. (4) Begin each manuscript component (title page, abstract, etc.) on a separate page. (5) Submit 3 printed, double-spaced copies of the manuscript, including figures and tables. (6) Also provide your manuscript on one newly-formatted 3.5-inch floppy disk containing an exact copy of the manuscript with tables and figures in a separate file (TIFF, EPS or JPEG). Label the disk clearly with the journal name, author and title, file content, computer system (DOS, Windows or Macintosh), word processor (Word, WordPerfect etc.) and version used. Do not convert your manuscript to ASCII format. Include only the files corresponding to the manuscript. The paper manuscript and the file on the disk must be the same. Include only the files corresponding to the manuscript.
Title page Should contain (1) a concise informative title; (2) author(s)' names; (3) name of department(s)/institution(s) to which the work is attributed; (4) if the title exceeds 40 characters (letters and spaces), a running head of no more than 40 characters should be provided.
Abstract page Should contain (1) authors' surnames and initials; (2) title of manuscript; (3) title of journal, abbreviated as in reference list; (4) the word Abstract followed by a summary of the article (see below); (5) 3-10 key words according to Index Medicus; (6) abbreviations used; (7) name, telephone number, fax number, e-mail and postal address of the author to whom correspondence, proofs, and requests for offprints should be directed. The Abstract should normally not be longer than 500 words and should be divided into 4 paragraphs, headed Background, Methods, Results, and Conclusions. Abstracts for Brief Communications need not be so divided and should not exceed 250 words.
Introduction Present the background briefly, but do not review the subject extensively. Give only pertinent references. State the specific questions you want to answer.
Materials and methods Identify methods, apparatus (manufacturer's name and address), and procedures in sufficient detail to allow other workers to reproduce the results. Provide references and only brief descriptions of methods that have been previously published.
Results Present results in logical sequence in tables and illustrations. In the text, explain, emphasize or summarize the most important observations. Units of measurement should be expressed in accordance with Systeme International d'Unités (SI Units).
Discussion Do not repeat in detail data given in the Results section. Emphasize the new and important aspects of the study. Relate the observations to other relevant studies. On the basis of your findings (and those of others), discuss possible implications/conclusions. When stating a new hypothesis, clearly label it as such.
Tables Type each table on a separate sheet, with titles making them self-explanatory.
Illustrations Figures should clarify the text. Their number should be kept to a minimum. Submit 3 unmounted copies of each illustration, labelled on the back with the number, first author's name, and indicate the top of the figure. Figure legends must be typed on a separate page at the end of the manuscript. Figures should be professionally drafted, and the halftones should exhibit high contrast. Details must be large enough to retain their clarity after reduction in size. After reduction, illustrations should preferably fill single-column width (81 mm) although in exceptional cases 2/3 page width (120 mm) or full-page width (168 mm) will be accepted. Any colour illustrations must be paid for by the author. If there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_P_CoW.pdf

Abbreviations and symbols Use only standard abbreviations. All units will be metric. In decimals, a decimal point (), and not a comma, will be used. Avoid abbreviations in the title. The full term for which an abbreviation stands should precede its first use in the text unless it is a standard unit of measurement.
References These should be kept to the pertinent minimum and numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in the text. Identify references in text, tables, and legends by Arabic numerals (in parentheses). Try to avoid using abstracts as references. Include manuscripts accepted, but not published; designate the abbreviated title of the journal followed by (in press). Information from manuscripts not yet accepted should be cited in the text as (submitted) or, if in final preparation, as (manuscript in preparation). Where there are more than 5 authors to a cited paper, the first 3 names should be given followed by 'et al'. Titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the style used in Index Medicus/MEDLINE.
