About the journal

The Veliger (ISSN 0042-3211) is an international, peer-reviewed scientific quarterly published by the California Malacozoological Society, a non-profit educational organization. The Veliger is open to original papers pertaining to any problem connected with mollusks. Manuscripts are considered on the understanding that their contents have not appeared, or will not appear, elsewhere in substantially the same or abbreviated form. Holotypes of new species must be deposited in a recognized public museum, with catalogue numbers provided. Even for non-taxonomic papers, placement of voucher specimens in a museum is strongly encouraged and may be required. Very short papers, generally not over 750 words, are published in a "Notes, Information & News" column; in this column also appear notices of meetings and other items of interest to our members and subscribers.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts must be typed, one side only, on A4 or equivalent (e.g., 8-1/2" x 11") paper, and double-spaced throughout, including references, figure legends, footnotes, and tables. All margins should be at least 25 mm wide. Number the pages. Text should be ragged right (i.e., not full justified). Avoid hyphenating words at the right margin. Manuscripts, including figures, should be submitted in triplicate. The first mention in the text of the scientific name of a taxon should be accompanied by the taxonomic authority, including the year, if possible. Underline scientific names and other words to be printed in italics; no other manipulation of type faces is necessary on the manuscript. Metric and Celsius units are to be used. For aspects of style not addressed in this memorandum, please see a recent issue of the journal. The Veliger publishes in English only. Authors whose first language is not English should seek the assistance of a colleague who is fluent in English before submitting a manuscript. In most cases, the parts of a manuscript should be as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, literature cited, figure legends, footnotes, tables, and figures. The title page should include the title, authors' names, and addresses. The abstract should be less than 200 words long and should describe concisely the scope, main results, and conclusions of the paper; it should not include references

Literature Cited

References in the text should be given by the name of the author(s) followed by the date of publication: for one author (Phillips, 1981), for two authors (Phillips & Smith, 1982), and for more than two (Phillips et al., 1983). The reference need not be cited when author and date are given only as authority for a taxonomic name.

The Literature Cited section should include all (and only) references cited in the text, listed in alphabetical order by author. Each citation must be complete, with all journal titles unabbreviated, and in the following forms:

(a) Journal articles: Hickman, C. S. 1992. Reproduction and development of trochacean gastropods. The Veliger 35:245-272.

(b) Books: Bequaert, J. C. & W. B. Miller. 1973. The Mollusks of the Arid Southwest. University of Arizona Press: Tucson. xvi + 271 pp.

(c) Composite works: Feder, H. M. 1980. Asteroidea: the sea stars. Pp. 117-135 in R. H. Morris, D. P. Abbott & E. C. Haderlie (eds.), Intertidal Invertebrates of California. Stanford University Press: Stanford, Calif.

Tables

Tables must be numbered and each typed on a separate sheet. Each table should be headed by a brief legend. Avoid vertical rules.

Illustrations

Figures must be carefully prepared and submitted ready for publication. Each should have a concise legend, listed on a sheet following the literature cited. Text figures should be in black ink and completely lettered. Type should be no less than 1.5 mm high after reduction. Use one consecutive set of Arabic numbers for all illustrations (that is, do not separate "plates" from "text figures"). Keep in mind Veliger page format and column size when designing figures.

Photographs for halftone reproduction must be of good quality, trimmed squarely, grouped as appropriate, and mounted on suitably heavy board. When mounting prints together, leave no space between them; the printer will separate them with a fine white rule. Color photographs often lack the contrast to reproduce well in black and white. Where appropriate, a scale bar may be used in the photograph; otherwise, the specimen size should be given in the figure legend. Sets or copies of figures that accompany reviewers' copies of manuscripts must be clear enough that the referees can judge their quality.

As long as suitable hard-copy versions are included for the editor and reviewers, illustrations also may be submitted as digital files. It is the author's responsibility to ensure that such files are readable by the printer; contact Allen Press (www.allenpress.com) before submitting, to determine the types of files and media they can accept. Files that turn out to be unreadable will cause delays in publication.

Processing of Manuscripts

Upon receipt each manuscript is critically evaluated by at least two reviewers. Based on these evaluations the editor makes a preliminary decision of acceptance or rejection. The editor's decision and the reviewers' comments are sent to the author for consideration and further action. Unless requested, only one copy of the final, revised manuscript needs to be returned to the editor. The author is informed of the final decision and acceptable manuscripts are forwarded to the printer. The author will receive proofs from the printer. One set of corrected proofs should be returned promptly to the editor after review. Changes other than the correction of printing errors will be charged to the author at cost.

An order form for the purchase of reprints will accompany proofs. Reprints are ordered directly from the printer.

Common Errors of Presentation

The following errors of presentation or interpretation are so common (particularly in taxonomic manuscripts) that they are worth pointing out here. Attention to these points will increase a manuscript's chances of acceptance:

Do not confuse raw similarity (observational, objective) with phylogenetic relationship (inferential, interpretive). The term "affinity" should not be used when "similarity" or "phylogenetic relationship" is meant. Avoid using "close" as an adjective denoting resemblance.

A two-taxon statement, e.g., "[Taxon A] is closely related to [Taxon B]", is meaningless. The minimal form of such statement with any significance is "[Taxon A] and [Taxon B] are more closely related to each other than either is to [Taxon C]."

Do not refer to taxa as "advanced" (or "apomorphic") or "primitive" (or "plesiomorphic"). Apomorphy and plesiomorphy are attributes of character-states, not of taxa (which are generally mosaics of apomorphies and plesiomorphies; cf. de Queiroz, K. 1988, Philosophy of Science 55:238-259; O'Hara, R. J. 1992, Biology & Philosophy 7:135-160).

Authors' Contributions

The standard author's contribution to page costs for manuscripts received in submission after July 31, 2002, is US $50.00 per printed page (2.5 double-spaced manuscript pages normally equal one printed page). Professional biologists and others for whom publication in peer-reviewed journals such as The Veliger is normal in the course of their work are expected to contribute at this rate. Students and others whose usual professional budget does not include page costs are encouraged to seek special sources of funding. When these are not forthcoming, contribution at the rate of US $20.00 per printed page is requested and expected. This request is made only after the publication of a paper; these contributions are unrelated to the acceptance or rejection of a manuscript, which is entirely on the basis of merit. Because these contributions by individual authors are voluntary, they may be considered by authors as tax-deductible donations to the California Malacozoological Society, Inc., to the extent allowed by law. In exceptional cases where even this reduced rate constitutes a hardship, authors may request a waiver of page cost contributions. CMS, Inc. will provide a questionnaire form for this purpose. CMS, Inc. will consider these applications and grant waivers within limits of availability for each volume and issue. An institutional requirement that an author not publish in a journal that assesses page cost contributions will not be considered a valid "hardship."
