Instructions to Authors

Vascular Medicine is an ISI-ranked, peer-reviewed journal.

Vascular Medicine is the premier international journal of vascular medicine comprising original research articles and reviews on vascular biology, epidemiology, diagnosis, medical treatment and interventions for vascular disease.

Vascular Medicine adheres to a single-blind peer review process in which the reviewer’s name is routinely withheld from the author unless the reviewer requests a preference for his/her identity to be revealed. Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two referees. All manuscripts are reviewed as rapidly as possible, and an editorial decision is generally reached within 10-12 weeks of submission.

Vascular Medicine publishes original articles, reviews, case studies and correspondence on any subject relevant to vascular medicine. The principal criteria for acceptance of material are originality and quality. All material submitted for publication is assumed to be submitted exclusively to Vascular Medicine unless the contrary is stated. All authors must sign a Transfer of Copyright and present it with the material. Before acceptance, papers will be refereed and may be statistically assessed.

Priority and time of publication are decided by the Editors, who retain the customary right to edit material accepted for publication.

Vascular Medicine has a fully web-based system for the submission and review of manuscripts. All submissions should be made online at Vascular Medicine SAGETRACK website

Please ensure that you submit editable/source files only (Microsoft Word or RTF) and that your document does not include page numbers; the Vascular Medicine SAGETRACK system will generate them for you, and then automatically convert your manuscript to PDF for peer review. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor's decision and requests for revisions, will be by email.

If you would like to discuss your paper prior to submission, or seek advice on the submission process please contact the editorial office at the following email address: vascularmedicine@partners.org

Submitting a Revised Submission

Authors submitting revised manuscripts should follow the instructions above to submit through the SAGETRACK system. To create a revision, go to the 'Manuscripts with Decisions' option in your Author Dashboard and select 'create a revision in the 'Action' column. Authors of all revised submissions should, when prompted, provide information explaining the changes in your manuscript as this will be provided to reviewers.

In addition all changes should be clearly indicated in the revised manuscript itself. This may be done by using the "track changes" feature in Word, or by simply highlighting or underlining all changes.

Structure

Original articles should include title page, keywords, abstract (approximately 150 words), introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgements, references, tables, figures. If applicable, manuscripts reporting the results of clinical trails should include the clinical trail registration information at the end of the abstract. Please include the name of the registry, the clinical trail registration number and the URL for the registry.

Review articles should include title page, keywords, abstract, introduction, text, conclusion, acknowledgements, references, tables, figures.

Case reports should include title page, keywords, abstract, introduction, case history, discussion, acknowledgements, references, figures.

Images in vascular medicine should include title page, keywords, figure legend (up to 300 words) and figures.

Guidelines for word length:

o review articles, 5,000-10,000 words;

o original papers, 1,500-3,000 words with up to six tables or figures;

o case reports, up to 900 words with one table or figure;

o letters, up to 600 words;

o Images in vascular medicine, up to 300 words (to be legend only) with up to 4 figures.

Style

i) Generic names should be used for drugs. Authors should be aware of national differences in drug names and availability, and give alternative names or drugs in the text.

ii) Scientific measurements should be given in SI units, but blood pressure should be expressed in mmHg and haemoglobin as g/dl.

iii) For numbers, adopt a rule that all numbers under 10 should be written as words, except when attached to a unit of quantity (e.g. 1 mm or 3 kg), and that numbers of 10 or more should be written as digits, except at the beginning of a sentence.

iv) Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and must be clearly defined when used for the first time. Abbreviations should be typed with no full point.

v) Avoid excessive capitalization. For the titles of books and articles, capitals should be used for the initial letter of the first word only. However, for the titles of journals and series, the initial letter of all principal words should be capitalized.

vi) Use italics for emphasis only very sparingly.

Tables

Each table should be typed on a separate sheet. Each table should have an explanatory caption, and be clearly numbered. All supplied tables must be in a editable format, either word, tiff etc.

Figures

Each figure should be provided as separate jpeg files, saved as Fig1.jpeg, Fig2.jpeg, etc. or in a PowerPoint file.

All costs for reproducing figures or diagrams in color must be met by the author.

Figures and graphs save in WORD or EXCEL do not transport well into typesetting packages. Use a dedicated graphics package whenever possible.

Use as few fonts as possible, preferably only Times New Roman, Arial or Helvetica in a consistent font size.

If providing a scanned copy of image, set the scanner to black and white mode (gray scale) for a black and white image. If your figures are to appear in color, use CMYK not RGB.

When the background of a figure is blank please use only black out of 4 CMYK colours to reach the colour.

i) Line drawings

Save as separate jpeg files or in a PowerPoint file.

Do not specify hairline rules on graphs - set a minimum weighting of 0.5 pts (1/2 points).

If scanning, set a minimum resolution (raster width) of 800 dpi and set the dimensions in which it will appear.

ii) Line and tone combinations

Save as separate jpeg files or in a PowerPoint file.

Minimize the number of tints.

Use a maximum of 30% gray fill against which to lay black text.

Opt for hatching instead of tints where possible.

If scanning, set with a minimum resolution (raster width) of 600 dpi.

iii) Original photos (non rasterised grey scale images)

Patients in photographs should not be identifiable and should have their eyes masked. Any identifiable photograph should be accompanied by written permission from the patient, parent or guardian. Colour photographs can only be accepted if the author bears the cost of reproduction.

Ensure that you supply the original image.

Save as .tiff or .eps (not .jpg).

Set the rasterise or dither function off.

Scan with a resolution (raster width) of 300 dpi.

Scan with a raster angle of 45°.

Set the lightest gray scale to 5% and the darkest to 95%.

iv) Previously published figures (rasterised gray scale images)

Save as .tiff or .eps (not .jpg).

Beware of moiré patterns.

Scan with a resolution (raster width) of 300 dpi.

Scan with a raster angle of 45°.

Set the lightest gray scale to 5%, and the darkest to 95%.

Word or Excel Users

Ideally figures should be supplied separate jpeg files or in a PowerPoint file. However if you cannot avoid using Word or Excel please follow the guidelines below.

Figures should be sized for reproduction at 100% e.g. for LR&T

Maximum 75 mm wide for a figure that fits 1 column

Maximum 150 mm wide for a figure that fits 2 columns

Any text should be included within the width.

Ensure the font size is point 6 or larger.

Use Times New Roman Font - or ensure that all figures in your paper use the same font.

The minimum finished line thickness on any graph should be 1/4 point.

Avoid light shading as this is difficult to reproduce when the figure is extracted from word/excel into the typesetting system.

Use black or very dark shading or patterns such as hatching instead.

Do not include background shading on your figures - or draw a border around them.

Do not include the figure legend within the figure.

If your figure has a key this should appear in the legend or below the figure. Do not place this next to the figure.

Statistics

Numbers of patients or subjects should be given, with percentages in brackets. Means should be expressed as the mean with standard deviation of the mean: where appropriate, authors should also consider supplying the median. Care should be taken that all statistical methods are appropriate, and that it is clear which methods were used for which analyses. Any statistical methods not in common use should be supported by references or described in detail. Results of statistical tests should be reported as well as the p values; where possible, confidence intervals should also be reported.

Ethics

It will be assumed that studies reported in papers submitted to Vascular Medicine have the approval of local ethical committees where relevant.

References

References should always be appropriate: more is not necessarily better. Only articles that have been published or are in press may be included. They should be numbered in the order in which they appear in the text, and should be given in the 'Vancouver style' (see (1) below). In summary, for articles give names and initials of all authors (unless seven or more, in which case give the first three only then et al.), the title of the article, the journal title abbreviated according to Index Medicus, year of publication, volume number and first and last page number; for chapters in books give authors, chapter title, editors of the book, the book title, place of publication, publisher, year of publication and first and last page number. Copyright and Permissions

SAGE requires the author as the rights holder to sign a Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement for all articles we publish. SAGE’s Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement is a licence agreement under which the author retains copyright in the work but grants SAGE the sole and exclusive right and licence to publish for the full legal term of copyright.

Authors must obtain permission to reproduce all matter in the following categories:

i) All maps, diagrams, figures and photographs - forms are available from the publishers.

ii) Single passages of prose exceeding 250 words, or scattered passages totalling more than 400 words from any one work. Please supply the publisher with full information for all work cited, including

author, date published, publisher and page references.

Copyright extends to 70 years after the death of the author or 70 years after publication of a scholarly edition, whichever is longer.

Proofs

Proofs will be supplied only once in the form of page proofs. It is necessary to regard submitted manuscripts as final texts to which no changes should be made at proof stage apart from printer's errors. Please remember that:

i) Proof corrections are disproportionately expensive. For example, the insertion of three commas on a page will frequently cost as much, or more than, the original setting cost of the entire page.

ii) If you return proofs even a few days after the date stipulated, it may be too late to include your corrections in the final version of the journal.

E-Prints

Access to 25 free e-prints will be provided; the corresponding author will receive a maximum of five complimentary copies of the journal.

SAGE Open

If you wish your article to be freely available online immediately upon publication (as some funding bodies now require), you can opt for it to be included in SAGE Open upon payment of a publication fee. Manuscript submission and refereeing procedure is unchanged, but on acceptance of your article you will be asked to let SAGE know directly if you are choosing SAGE Open. For further information please visit http:/www.sagepub.co.uk/sageopen.sp

If funding has been provided for your research, convention dictates that you acknowledge the source and grant information in the Acknowledgements section of your article. Please note that in some cases, grant funders require authors to attribute the funding source, describe the role of the study funding body and include the relevant grant reference numbers.
