About the journal

Ultrastructural Pathology

Published bimonthly, Ultrastructural Pathology is the only journal to be devoted entirely to diagnostic ultrastructural pathology. The journal spotlights ongoing advances in the uses of electron microscopic and immunohistochemical techniques, correlations of ultrastructural data with light microscopy, histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, biochemistry, cell and tissue culturing, electron probe analysis, and important new investigative, clinical, and diagnostic EM methods. The journal is affiliated with the Society for Ultrastructural Pathology and EuroCellPath

 Cover

Readership:

Surgical pathologists, electron microscopists, cell biologists, and all those practicing electron microscopy for diagnostic purposes.

Instructions to Authors

***Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

Ultrastructural Pathology is devoted to the prompt publication of papers on diagnostic electron microscopy, where the word diagnostic is used in its broadest sense.

Main emphasis is on the use of electron microscopy in the study of human disease. Manuscripts correlating ultrastructural data with light microscopy, histochemistry, bio-chemistry, cell and tissue culturing, electron probe X-ray analysis, and other techniques will be encouraged. Papers on experimental animals will be considered only if they contain ultrastructural information of at least potential importance to diagnosis in humans. Papers on normal human ultrastructure will occasionally be published as a basis for the study of disease. Original research papers, case histories, papers on instrumentation and techniques, brief reports, "a case for the panel" (submitted electron micrographs with unknown structures, to be commented on by members of the editorial or consulting board), "intriguing cases," and letters to the editor are welcome.

Ultrastructural Pathology also contains solicited review articles, book reviews, and announcements of conferences, appointments, new equipment, etc. Larger contributions may be published as supplements, subject to normal reviewing procedures.

A paper is received with the understanding that it is submitted solely to Ultrastructural Pathology and that no great portion of it has been, or is being, published elsewhere. If in doubt, enclose a copy of the former publication (or the paper as submitted to the other publication). All accepted manuscripts, artwork, and photographs become the publisher's property.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION

Send the original typewritten manuscript and one photocopy with two sets of illustrations and a cover letter to Jan Vincents Johannessen, MD, PhD, Bruce Mackay, MD, PhD, Jahn M. Nesland, MD, PhD, or Douglas W. Henderson, MB, BS, RCPath. Enclose a self-addressed postcard for the editor to return as acknowledgement of manuscript receipt.

Copyright Release

Transfer of copyright from author to publisher must be clearly stated in writing to enable the publisher to assure maximum dissemination of the author's work. The signed '"transfer of Copyright Agreement" must be received before the publisher begins work on a paper. Submission of this signed form with the paper will greatly facilitate its early publication. The signed '"transfer of Copyright Agreement" also acknowledges that the author recognises full responsibility for obtaining permission to reproduce copyrighted material from other sources. (Please note that the copyright transfer is effective only if the paper is accepted for publication in the journal.)

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION

Type all manuscript pages (including tables, figure legends, and references) double-spaced and on only one side of letter-sized white bond paper. Allow margins of 4 cm (1-1/2") left and 2.5 cm (1") top, right, and bottom.

Title Page

Include the following: full title of the paper; all authors' names with highest academic degree and full affiliation; an abbreviated paper title (maximum of 40 characters) to be used as running head; acknowledgements; name, address, telephone number, and fax number of person who will handle correspondence, page proofs, and requests for reprints.

Abstract

The second page of the paper should include the abstract (maximum of 200 words) followed by a list of up to six keywords for coding and indexing.

Text

Make short and concise; include a brief introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, summary, references, tables, figures, and figure legends.

Reference

Follow the American Medical Association Manual of Style, Eighth Edition for reference style. Number in the order cited; place Arabic numeral within brackets for text citation. Papers "in press" may be included in the reference list; results "to be published" or received by "personal communication" should appear within parentheses in the text. Journal titles should be abbreviated as in Index Medius. Reference Samples:

Paper:

Levine GD, Rosai J. A spindle cell variant of thymic carcinoid tumor. Arch Pathol Lab Med. 1976; 100:293-300.

Book:

Bessis M; Weed RI, trans. Living Blood Cells and Their Ultrastructure. New York: Springer-Verlag, 1973.

Chapter in an edited book:

Dustin P, Tondeur M, Libert J. Metabolic and storage diseases. In: Johannessen JV, ed. Electron Microscopy in Human Medicine. New York: McGraw-Hill; 1978:148-245.

Tables

Number consecutively with single Arabic numerals; briefly and descriptively title each table and refer to it in the text. Doublespace each table and place it on a separate page.

Figures

Number consecutively with single Arabic numerals; briefly and descriptively caption each figure and refer to it in the text. Include a scale bar on the prints, and indicate the length of the scale bar in the caption. Original magnification may also be noted in the caption. Type captions double-spaced on a list separate from the figures.

Photographs

All photographs must fit the format of the journal without reduction. They should be either a single column [8.5 cm (3-1/4")] or a full page [17.9 cm (7")] in width and no more than a full page [23.5 cm (9- 1/4")] in-depth. Photos that are wider than a singe column yet narrower than a full page are unacceptable and will be returned to the author or cropped by the publisher. All photographs must be glossy and have good contrast. Figure number, author's name, and indication of top should be written on the back with a soft pencil. Preferred mounting may be shown on a separate drawing. Lettering and arrows should be on figures.

Line illustrations

They should be professionally made, with maximum contrast and sharp, even lettering; if they are not, they will be remade by the publisher at the author's expense.

Four-colour illustrations will be considered for publication; however, the author will be required to bear the full cost involved in their printing and publication. The charge for the first figure is $1,500. Subsequent figures, totalling no more than 4 text pages, are $500.00 each. Good quality colour prints should be provided, in their final size. Figures needing reduction or enlargement will be charged an additional 25 percent. The publisher has the right to refuse publication of colour prints deemed unacceptable.

Letters to the Editor

Letters should be prepared as manuscripts (typed double-spaced). Accompanying figures should be limited to the single column width (8.5 cm); figures must have legends and be prepared according to the rules above.

Spelling

Follow Merrriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Tenth Edition.

Page Charges

Part of the publication cost is covered by a page charge of $43.50 per printed page. If these charges are paid, the author will receive 50 reprints of the article. The acceptance and publication of papers are not dependent on the payment of these charges.

Proofs and Author's Alterations

Page proofs are sent to the designated author. They must be carefully checked and returned within 48 hours of receipt in order to avoid publication delay. Only minor corrections against the manuscript can be allowed without charge.

Early Electronic Offprints

Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author's preferential rate of ?5.00 per copy.
