Instructions to Authors

Ultrasonic Imaging accepts full-length papers, research notes, comments on papers appearing in the journal, book reviews, and occasional review articles. Authors wishing to submit review articles should contact the editor beforehand. Manuscripts should be submitted to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/uix. Questions can be directed to the editor, Ernest Feleppa, by e-mail at efeleppa@riversideresearch.org or by calling him at (212) 502-1775.

Introduction and Disclosure Statement
Manuscripts submitted to Ultrasonic Imaging will be critically reviewed by the editor with appropriate independent reviews by members of the Editorial Board and other expert referees. The publisher may make changes in format to conform to editorial usage and style. Changes may include deletions that are necessary to meet space and format requirements.

Manuscripts are considered for publication with the stipulation that they are submitted solely to Ultrasonic Imaging and that no part of the submission has previously been published elsewhere. Where questions exist about possible previous publication, authors should explain and submit copies of material that appeared in print or on a website.

Statements and opinions expressed in the articles and communications appearing in the journal are those of the author(s) and not necessarily those of the editor and publisher. The editor and publisher disclaim any responsibility or liability for such material. Neither the editors nor the publisher guarantee, warrant, or endorse any product or service advertised in this publication, nor do they guarantee any claim made by the manufacturer or provider of an advertized product or service.

Manuscript Preparation
Manuscripts submitted to Ultrasonic Imaging must be prepared as described in the guidelines of the Chicago Manual of Style (16th ed). All manuscripts must be submitted electronically in Microsoft Word file format (*.doc files) or in LaTeX (if LaTeX, please save the LaTeX document as a Post Script file (.ps) and submit the Post Script file. Or, save the LaTeX document as a PDF file. Using Adobe Acrobat Professional or Standard, import the PDF file and save as Word file (.doc) or Rich Text Format file (.rtf). Then submit the resulting .doc or .rtf file.). Each image should be numbered (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) in order as it appears in text, with instructions in the body of the manuscript on where it should be placed.

    1. Order. Submissions should be arranged into the following sections: (1) title page, including author names and affiliations and 3-5 keywords; (2) main document, consisting of all text-based material, including abstract, article text, references, figure captions, tables, and sidebar text; and (3) artwork, images, and photographs. (Figures are submitted separately from text; see the Graphics and Tables section below)
    2. Title Page. On the title page include: (1) the full title of the article; (2) authors’ full names, arranged in the order they should appear in print; (3) institutional affiliation of all authors; (4) contact information for the corresponding author (e-mail, phone, and mailing address); and 3-5 keywords to facilitate online searches for the topics covered in the article. (5) Acknowledgments and funding information related to the article.
    3. Main document layout. The main document should consist of text-based elements only: the body of the article, references, tables and table captions, and figure captions. Each table and figure must be referenced in the body of the manuscript (e.g: "For more information ... , see Table 2"). Minimize layout specifications such as multiple columns, font changes, type size, page parameters, etc.
    4. References. All references should be formatted in the Vancouver style. Examples:

Graphics and Tables
Artwork such as charts and graphs, maps, photographs, figures, and line art. Images should be easily readable, clear, and neat. Color images are preferred for the online version of the journal; figures in the print version will be published in grayscale , unless the author elects to pay for color art. . (The color charges are $800 for the first piece of art and $200 per piece thereafter). Notify the editor upon submission if you intend to elect color printing. Number artwork files consecutively in the order the images appear within the article (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.) and submit each image as a separate file. Further information can be found at http://www.sagepub.com/journalgateway/msg.htm

Photos and illustrations.
and illustrations. Acceptable file formats include TIFF, EPS, JPEG, and press-ready PDF. Submit images in approximately the same size they are to appear in print, at fine resolution, i.e., at least 300 dots per inch (dpi).

Line art (charts, graphs, maps, and line graphics). Submit original line art in the same program it was created (e.g., MS Word or Excel for graphs). Scanned line-based artwork should be submitted at 900 dpi, in roughly the size it will appear in print.

Tables. Statistics, facts, and resource lists should be submitted in table format for easier reading. Submit tables in an editable format such as Microsoft Word or Excel-based tables. Tables should be submitted as part of the main document file; multiple tables should be numbered in the order of their appearance in the article. Include brief descriptive captions for each. All tables will be reformatted and typeset in the journal’s table style.

Permission to Reprint Copyrighted Material
The author is responsible for providing written permission and releases for materials where needed. Because the process of obtaining permission can be time consuming, we highly recommended that authors submit necessary documentation at the time of manuscript submission. No article will be published in Ultrasonic Imaging without all required permissions.

Written permission from the copyright holder to use non-original material (including any photographs, images, figures or tables, or quotations exceeding 100 words) must be submitted with the manuscript, and acknowledgment must be given to the original source of the copyrighted material in the manuscript. You may download and submit the SAGE Request for Permission to Reprint Material for Scholarly Purposes Form.

Identifying information regarding a person featured in an article, including recognizable photos or voice recordings, should be removed from the manuscript, or you must obtain written informed consent from the person. For images and recordings, submit a signed copy of the SAGE Audio-Video Likeness Release Form.

Conflict of Interest
The author is responsible for disclosing any potential conflict of interest regarding the manuscript, as specified in the Exclusive License to Publish Form that authors will be required to sign upon manuscript acceptance. (See below.)

Agreement
Authors of accepted manuscripts are required to sign an electronic Exclusive License to Publish Form. Upon manuscript acceptance, authors will be instructed on how to sign and submit the required license agreement online.

Obtaining English-Language Help for your Submission

Authors who would like to refine the use of English in their manuscripts might consider obtaining the services of a professional English-language editing company. We highlight some of these companies at http://www.sagepub.com/journalgateway/engLang.htm

Please be aware that SAGE has no affiliation with these companies and makes no endorsement of them. An author's use of these services in no way guarantees that his or her submission will ultimately be accepted. Any arrangement an author enters into will be exclusively between the author and the particular company, and any costs incurred are the sole responsibility of the author.
