About the journal

Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies

The focus of Transportation Research: Part C is high-quality, scholarly research that addresses development, application and implications, in the field of transportation, of emerging technologies from such fields as engineering, computer science, electronics, control systems and telecommunications, among others. The interest is not in the individual technologies per se, but in the ultimate implications of emerging technologies for the planning, design, operation, control, management, maintenance and rehabilitation of transportation systems, services and components. Also of interest are the impacts of emerging technologies on transportation system performance, in terms of level of service, capacity, safety, reliability, resource consumption and the environment, economics and finance, privacy, standards, liability, and societal and institutional roles and barriers. Submissions in the following areas of transportation are encouraged by Part C: emerging technologies for all modes; intelligent transportation systems; adaptive control and real-time operations; sensors and detection systems; infrastructure applications of emerging technologies.

Part C's aims and scope are complementary to Transportation Research Part A: Policy and Practice, Part B: Methodological and Part D: Transport and Environment. The complete set forms the most cohesive and comprehensive reference of current research in transportation science.

Selected abstracts from Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies are available on TransportConnect, the Elsevier Science www service for the academic and professional community.

Instructions to Authors

Five copies of the manuscript should be submitted to the Editor-in-Chief.

English is the language of the journal.

Reprints can be purchased on a reprint order form which will accompany proofs.

The original manuscript and diagrams will be discarded one month after publication unless the publisher is requested to return original material to the author.

Both figures and tables will be photo-reproduced, and authors are required to furnish camera-ready artwork or glossy prints. Photocopies or carbon copies are not adequate as they will not reproduce clearly. In case of difficulty please consult the Photoreprographic Unit of your institution.

All authors must sign the 'Transfer of Copyright' agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.

Style of Manuscript
Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced on one side of the page only with wide-margins. A short abstract should accompany the manuscript on a separate sheet. Both the paper and the abstract should be headed by the name or names of the author(s) and their affiliation(s). In the case of co-authors, it should be clearly indicated which author is to receive correspondence and proofs for correction. Please supply corresponding author's telephone and FAX numbers, and E-mail address if available. After the abstract list up to six keywords.

Mathematical expressions should be carefully inserted, keeping in mind typographical difficulty. Authors should indicate in the margin the names of Greek letters or other unusual symbols when they first occur and clarify any other possible sources of ambiguity: for example, between "0" and the letter "O", the numeral "1" and the letter "l," capital and small letters, etc. Tables should be submitted on separate sheets of paper, should be numbered consecutively, and should have informative titles. The position of tables in the manuscript should be indicated. All figures and illustrations should be professionally drawn about twice the final size required. Their position in the manuscript should be indicated, and figure numbers together with informative titles should be listed on a separate sheet of paper.

Authors are seriously recommended to use SI (metric) units in their manuscripts, with optional English equivalents in parentheses. If there is a persuasive reason for avoiding SI units, this should be explained in the covering letter submitting the manuscript.

The Harvard System of references is used: in the body of the text a paper is referred to by the author's surname with the year of publication in parentheses, and at the end of the paper complete references are given alphabetically by authors' surnames.

Journal references should appear as follows:

Ran, B., Boyce, D.E., 1996. A link-based variational inequality formulation of ideal dynamic user-optimal route choice problem. Transportation Research 4C, 1-12.

Book references should appear as follows:

Davis, R., 1993, Death on the Streets: Cars and the Methodology of Road Safety. Leading Edge Publications, Hawes, Yorks.

Submission of electronic manuscripts
Delivery. Authors may now submit accepted manuscripts on 3.5" or 5.25" disks. Disks must be clearly marked with the following information: (i) operating system; (ii) disk format (e.g. DS/DD); (iii) word processor used, including version number; (iv) authors' names; and (v) short title of article. Two printed copies of the final version of the mauscript should also be submitted with the disk. In the event of differences between disk and hard copy, the hard copy will be considered as the definitive version.

Illustrations should be included separately and clearly marked. Illustrations available electronically should be supplied on separate disks and the operating system, format and graphics program used (with version number) clearly marked.

Preparation. When using a word-processor to prepare a manuscript the following should be noted: (i) page design will be handled by the publisher. There is therefore no need to use formatting commands such as centring, justifying text, indenting, etc.; (ii) use the word processor's facilities to indicate the following text attributes: bold, underline, italic, subscript, superscript, strikeout; (iii) do not use the hyphenation facilities of your word processor; and (iv) when using symbols to denote special characters please supply a list of all codes used. Use "hard returns" (i.e. using the Enter key) only at the end of paragraphs. Use your word-processor's "word-wrap" feature within paragraphs.

It is essential that the printed versions supplied are produced directly from submitted electronic version.

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway
