About the journal

The mission of Transplant Immunology is to disseminate information regarding the study of transplantation pathobiology, to serve as a forum for new ideas and concepts in clinical and experimental transplantation, to foster the evolution of the discipline and to assist transplant investigators in their professional endeavours. Transplantation pathobiology encompasses organ preservation, ischaemia/reperfusion injury, hyperacute rejection and xenotransplantation, acute and chronic rejection, and tissue anomalies that develop in association with transplantation.

Although immunology plays a significant part in transplant pathobiology, other factors related to organ physiology, acute and chronic inflammation, vascular biology, cell biology, tissue repair/remodelling, cellular signalling and gene expression are important contributors to these pathologic processes. Studies in all of these areas are suitable for publication in Transplant Immunology.
Investigators are encouraged to submit the results of in vitro and in vivo studies that fall anywhere along the spectrum from basic research to preclinical and clinical research.
Transplant Immunology also seeks reports on therapeutic agents and approaches, including transplant-related gene therapy strategies. Submitted manuscripts will be rapidly peer-reviewed and published. They will be judged on the basis of scientific merit, originality, timeliness and quality. In addition, Transplant Immunology will publish features intended to help evaluate issues, highlight advancements or assist investigators in their professional endeavours. Unsolicited suggestions and contributions for these features are encouraged.

Instructions to Authors

Guide for Authors

The preferred medium of submission is on disk with accompanying manuscript (see "Electronic manuscripts" below).

Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original work and that it has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere. It also implies the transfer of the Copyright from the author to the publisher. Authors must obtain permission to reproduce copyrighted material. Papers and original illustrations should be submitted on disk plus two copies and accompanied by a letter of transmittal to the following editorial office:

Professor Raffaello Cortesini
Columbia University
Department of Pathology
630 West 168 Street - P&S 14-401
New York, NY 10032, USA
E-mail:
rc238@columbia.edu

After final acceptance of an article only corrections to the title and list of authors as they appear on the accepted article will be permitted, not changes; particularly, no author names may be added to or deleted from the accepted list.

Types of Papers

Review articles, normally approximately 50 typed manuscript pages with about 60 references, and arranged in numbered sections at the authors discretion but with an abstract and list of 3-6 keywords.

Original Research Papers, usually not exceeding 30 manuscript pages and reporting research relating to the testing of an original hypothesis or to the achievement of a single or small related set of objectives. The case for undertaking the study, its originality and its importance must be laid out in the Introduction and the Hypothesis or Objective must be stated under a separate heading. The format should therefore be as follows:
Title page (see below), Abstract (plus 3-6 keywords) on a separate page, 1. Introduction, 2. Objective or Hypothesis, 3. Materials and methods, 4. Results, 5. Discussion and References. The sections numbered here should be so numbered in the manuscript.

Brief communications should be submitted as a continuous text but with the same notional divisions as those of an Original Research Paper. An abstract and Keywords should still be provided. Manuscripts should not exceed 20 typescript pages.

Correspondence in the form of Letters to the Editor, concerning any subject relevant to the subject of the journal, may be published at the Editors' discretion. Such letters should not exceed three typescript pages.

Preparation of Manuscripts The preferred medium of final submission to the accepting editor is on disk with accompanying reviewed and revised manuscript (see "Electronic manuscripts" below). Manuscripts should be in the English language and should be typewritten with double spacing on one side of the paper only. A short Abstract, not exceeding 500 words, should be on a separate sheet; it will appear at the beginning of the paper. A list of 3-6 keywords should appear underneath the Abstract. The title page should be a separate sheet, bearing title, author(s)' name(s) and their full addresses, and a footnote with the corresponding author's Phone and Fax (and e-mail) number. As a rule, papers should be divided into numbered sections, headed by a caption (e.g. Abstract; 1. Introduction; 2. Objective (or Original Hypothesis); 3. Material and methods; 3. Results; 4. Discussion; References).

Pharmaceuticals

The Journal will be distributed internationally; therefore it is essential that generic names are used for drugs. Where this is impossible, for example, in special formulations, it is important to specify at the first usage the content of the formulation and the manufacturer (with location).

Units and Abbreviations

Use SI (Systeme International) Units wherever practicable. Note that the abbreviation for a unit is never followed by a full stop. When using "liter" in a measurement, e.g. "10 g/l " write out the "liter" in full (10 g/liter). Do not use full stops in abbreviations with capital letters, e.g. DNA, ATP, PAS. For lower case abbreviations use full stops, e.g. i.v., etc. Use mm3, not cu.mm.

Footnotes and cross-references Footnotes should be avoided wherever possible. For essential footnotes to tables, use superscript a,b,c, ,etc.

Illustrations

Line drawings (including graphs) should be drawn in black ink on white paper or on tracing paper with blue or faint gray rulings; graduation will not be reproduced. Lettering should be large enough to permit photographic reduction. If figures are not to be reduced their format should not exceed 13.0 x 20 cm (the typing area of the Journal).

Photographs (or half-tone illustrations) must be of good quality, submitted as black and white prints on glossy paper, and have as much contrast as possible. The degree of reduction will be determined by the publisher, but in general it should be assumed that the same degree of reduction will be applied to all figures in the same paper. For photomicrographs, where possible, a scale should appear on the photograph. Color plates will be reproduced at the expense of the author(s). Illustrations should be clearly marked on the reverse side with the number, orientation (top) and author's name; a soft pencil or preferably a felt-tipped pen should be used for marking photographs. The illustrations should be numbered with Arabic numerals. The legends should be typed separately.

Tables Tables should be compiled on separate sheets with double spacing, numbered with Arabic numerals and provided with a short descriptive title, a legend and/or footnotes identified by superscripts a,b,c,, etc.

References Please use the Vancouver reference system. In the text references should be numbered consecutively within square brackets (e.g. [1]). If you cite a reference more than once in the text, please use the same number each time. References in the reference list should accord with the system in Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (N Engl J Med 1991;34;424-29). Please ensure that references are complete and that all references that appear in the text also appear in the list, and vice versa.

Examples (journal [1], book [2], book chapter 3]):

Please note that all authors should be listed when six or less: when seven or more list only the first three and add et al. Do not include references to personal communications, unpublished data or manuscripts in preparation or submitted for publication.

Electronic manuscripts Electronic manuscripts have the advantage that there is no need for the rekeying of text, thereby avoiding the possibility of introducing errors and resulting in reliable and fast delivery of proofs.

The preferred storage medium is a 51-4 or 31-2 inch disk in MS-DOS format, although other systems are welcome, e.g., NEC and Macintosh (in this case, save your file in the usual manner, do not use the option "save in MS-DOS format"). Please do not split the article into separate files (title page as one file, text as another, etc.). Ensure that the letter "l" and digit "1" (also letter "O" and digit "0") have been used properly, and structure your article (tabs, indents, etc.) consistently. Characters not available on your wordprocessor (Greek letters, mathematical symbols, etc.) should not be left open but indicated by a unique code (e.g, gralpha, @, #, etc. for the Greek letter). Such codes should be used consistently throughout the entire text. Please make a list of such codes and provide a key. Do not allow your wordprocessor to introduce word splits and do not use a "justified" layout. Please adhere strictly to the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of the journal. It is very important that you save your file in the wordprocessor format. If your wordprocessor features the option to save files "in flat ASCII, please do not use it. Format your disk correctly and ensure that only the relevant file (one complete article only) is on the disk. Also, specify the type of computer and wordprocessing package used and label the disk with your name and the name of the file on the disk. After final acceptance, your disk plus one, final, printed and exactly matching version (as a printout) should be submitted together to the accepting editor. It is important the the file on disk and the printout are identical. Both will then be forwarded by the editor to Elsevier. Further information may be obtained from the Publisher.

Proofs, Offprints and Page Charge One set of proofs will be sent to the author(s) to be checked for typographical errors. No alteration to the text, tables or legends will be accepted. In case of two or more authors please indicate to whom the proofs should be sent. Twenty-five (25) offprints are provided free of charge. Additional copies (minimum 100) may be ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form, sent out together with the proofs.

Authors can also keep track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

There will be no page charge.

Guide to Online Submission

Introduction

Welcome to the Elsevier online submission service. This service has been designed to be as easy as possible to use. Authors can upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word?/I> or WordPerfect?/I>. It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe?Acrobat?PDF format, but if the article is accepted it will be necessary to send in the original source files.

The system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Note: articles are converted into PDF for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards.

What to submit?
Journal specific guidelines on types of article accepted and how to prepare your article can be found in the Author Gateway journal page, in the Guide for Authors.

File Formats
Word Processor Formats
Please submit your article as a file in one of the following formats:

MS Word 6

MS Word 97

MS Word 98 for Macintosh?

MS Word 2000

WordPerfect 6.1 or higher

RTF

Important notes on word processor file preparation

For review purposes you must submit your article as a SINGLE FILE. You need to embed all your figures and tables within this file.

Fonts: Please choose Times, Times New Roman, Courier, Arial or Helvetica fonts as much as possible. Other fonts (e.g. Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) character fonts) may cause the PDF conversion to fail. If your manuscript does not correctly convert to PDF, replace the font(s) where necessary and try again.

Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for you to apply excessive layout styling. In addition, avoid options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns, automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However, do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts, etc.

For the production of your article you will also have to submit your graphic files separately as high resolution graphics. (See also the section on Electronic Artwork below.)

LaTex
For general instructions on how to prepare an article using LaTeX, see the Latex file guidelines. In addition, please note the following:

Include all your graphics in the LaTeX file, e.g. with the \includegraphics from the graphics package.

Submit any special class (or style) files and other macro files with your article. We are using an up-to-date TeX installation (TeXLive5d), so you need not include any of the standard packages.

PDF
If possible, please submit the original LaTeX or word processor files: this website will take care of converting them into a PDF file.

If you wish to create your own PDF, download the ES_review.joboptions to the "Settings" folder of your Acrobat Distiller and choose the "ES_review" joboptions before converting your file.

Note: This joboptions file is for Adobe Distiller v4.05 and later. If you are still working with an older version, or if you need more help, see. PDF settings .

File naming
To avoid confusion, please make sure your file has a short, descriptive name. Short means less than 30 characters and descriptive means names like figure1.tif and smith-article-version1.doc.

Electronic Artwork
For the production of your paper in the journal we need high-resolution graphic files in either TIFF or EPS. For information on how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission, see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

The online submission process

1.       Find the journal on the Author Gateway by searching or browsing

2.       Read the 'Guide for Authors' for specific instructions on submitting a paper to that journal

3.       Click on the 'online submisssion' link in the right hand journal services box

4.       Log in if you are already a registered user (if you are not already a registered user you need to 'create a profile' by submitting your contact details and choosing a username/password combination). This creates a completely secure environment to send your paper to us online.

5.       Once you are logged in you are taken to the Journal's submission page where you choose to 'Submit New Paper'. You are taken through the following steps:

                         i.            Enter data related to your manuscript (Title, Authors, Keywords etc.)

ii.            Choose the accepting Editor. (if the Journal has more than one Editor, you will find a drop-down list with the names of all the Editors of this Journal to whom you may submit your article. The journal Guide for Authors will give you more information on how to decide which Editor to choose)

iii.            Upload your manuscript file(s). See the section on File Formats for more information.

iv.            The website creates a PDF from your source file(s). You must check this PDF as it will be sent to the reviewers. If the PDF is not OK edit and resubmit your source file(s) or contacts author support for advice - PDF/PostScript source can be submitted as well as LaTeX/Word Processor files.

                       v.            Upload your figures separately for the production process and select how you want your figures to appear in print (colour or black and white). If the figures are too large (>5 Mb) you may send manually direct to the editor.

vi.            Check your submission details are correct and press submit to send your files to the journal editor

6.       You will receive an acknowledgement email to say the paper is under review

7.       Until the review process is completed you will not be able to update your submission from the website. If you have made a mistake you must contact the editor.

If revision is required:

1.       You will receive an email from the editor

2.       You can revise your paper by using the link in the email which takes you back to the online submission service (when revising your paper all the previous information is retained - no retyping is needed but it can be updated and new files attached). Alternatively you can access the paper directly from the Journal's online submission page or from 'my home' on the Author Gateway.

3.       Make any changes necessary and add or remove figures/other files

4.       A revised PDF is created which is sent to the editor at the end of the process and you receive an acknowledgement email

5.       Once your new version is submitted you will not be able to make any further revisions from the website

After submission
For information on the status of your article, please contact the Editor to whom you submitted your article. There is an email link to the editor in the journal's online submission service or on 'my home' in the Author Gateway.

Final decision:
You will receive an email containing the final decision of the Editor, containing editorial comments.

After acceptance
Once your paper has been accepted you can track its progress from your home page on the Author Gateway. It will automatically move from the 'Online Submissions' section of 'my home' to 'Accepted Papers'. From here you can view the progress of your paper through the production process to the final published article. We will also email you with the major milestones, including a direct link to your article when it appears on ScienceDirect. For more information on tracking go to Getting Published with Elsevier.
