These payments are not a prerequisite for publication of any paper. Click here for manuscript submission and copyright forms.
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND POLICY
THYROID publishes original basic and clinical work in the field of thyroid molecular biology, biochemistry, pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, management, and therapy. Regular papers, solicited and unsolicited reviews, and letters to the Editor are peer-reviewed by the Editor, members of the Editorial Board and ad hoc reviewers. Thyroid will accept original manuscripts which contain material that has not been reported elsewhere, except in the form of an abstract of not more than 400 words. Prior abstract presentations should be described in a footnote to the title. Submissions must be accompanied by a letter requesting evaluation for publication in THYROID and indicating that the work has not been published or submitted elsewhere. Authors are encouraged to suggest names of appropriate reviewers, and may also request that a particular individual not serve in that capacity.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPT
Type manuscript double spaced on regular 8-1/2 x 11 typewriter paper (not erasable bond). Leave ample margins on the sides, top, and bottom of the page. Submit the original and three copies, including illustrations and tables. Disk submission is required, and the disk must match the hard copy exactly. Disks may be submitted in either PC or macintosh formats, preferably in Microsoft Word or Word Perfect.
The title page must include the authors' names and affiliations, the source of a work or study (if any), a running title of about 45 characters, and a list of key words for indexing. Please indicate the name, address, phone and fax numbers, and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence should be addressed. The second page should consist of an abstract of not more than 200 words, which should be self-explanatory without reference to the text. The papers should follow this format: abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, tables, figures, and legends. Number pages consecutively. At the end of the paper, give the name and address of the individual to whom reprint requests should be directed.
For clinical studies, experimental subjects should be described in detail and informed consent documented. Authors should ascertain that their experimental procedures are in compliance with the guiding principles in the "Care and Use of Animals" published each month in the Information for Authors of the American Journal of Physiology.
Please follow the requested style to avoid delays in publication. Consult a current issue of the Journal for the exact format.
TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS
Type each table with its title on a separate sheet of paper. Use Arabic numerals to number tables. Remember, each table must stand alone, i.e., contain all necessary information in the caption, and the table itself must be understood independently of the text. Details of experimental conditions should be included in the table footnotes. Information that appears in the text should not be repeated in tables, and tables should not contain data that can be given in the text in one or two sentences.
Original pen drawings and charts (drawn and lettered in India ink), glossy photostats of drawings or graphs, and original glossy photographs for all halftone illustrations should be supplied with the original manuscript. (Photocopies cannot be used for reproduction.) All illustrations should be identified on the back and bear the author's name. The top of the illustration should be indicated. A list of figure legends should be supplied at the end of the manuscript, double spaced. Magnifications should be included when appropriate. Illustrations will not be returned unless requested.
Color illustrations can be printed in the Journal by special arrangement with the Publisher. Please contact the Publisher for further details.
ABBREVIATIONS AND NOMENCLATURE
Abbreviations and nomenclature should follow the recommendations of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and the International Union of Biochemistry [see J. Biol. Chem. 252:10 (1977)]. The International System of Units (SI units) is recommended, but conventional units may also be used. In either case, it is desirable to include appropriate conversion factors to aid the reader. The list of abbreviations in Endocrinology 139:17A (January 1998) is generally acceptable in THYROID. Novel abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and must be explained when they first appear, after the first use in the text an abbreviation may be used. Drug names should always be generic.
REFERENCES
References should be presented in the following style: Journal papers: Lombardi A, Tramontano D, Braverman LE, Ingbar SH 1989 Transferrin in FRTL-5 cells: Regulation of its receptors by mitogenic agents and its role in growth. Endocrinology 125:652-658. Books: Wahner B 1961 The influence of the iodide prophylaxis of goiter on the frequency of cancer of the thyroid gland and on its structure. In: Pitt-Rivers R (ed) Advances in Thyroid Research. Pergamon Press, New York, p 350.
Cite references in text as consecutive numbers in parentheses, e.g. (11).
If it is necessary to cite an abstract, this should be so designated. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of the references, and are reminded that inaccurate references are highly frustrating to the reader, the cited author, and indexing services.
PERMISSIONS
The author must obtain permission to reproduce figures, tables, and text from previously published material. Written permission must be obtained from the original copyright holder (generally the publisher, not the author or editor) of the journal or book concerned. An appropriate credit line should be included in the figure legend or table footnote, and full publication information should be included in the reference list. Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other laboratories, and should accompany the manuscript.
REPRINTS
Reprints may be ordered by using the special reprint order form that will accompany the proofs. Reprints ordered after the issue is printed will be charged at a substantially higher rate.
RAPID COMMUNICATIONS
Work submitted for consideration for publication as a Rapid Communication must be: 1) novel, and 2) of exceptional significance. In a separate cover letter, the authors should justify the need for rapid publication of their findings.
Rapid Communications should be submitted camera-ready. Camera-ready copy should conform to the format of other papers published in THYROID: 1) All text should appear in two 3 ?inch columns, justified on both sides, with a center margin of ?inch. 2) Text should be in a serif font, such as Times Roman. 3) Point size for text and main headings should be 10-11 points and for titles 18-20 points. 4) The title should appear in bold upper and lower case, while authors?names should be in all upper case. 5) First headings should be bold, centered, and upper case; second level headings should be italic, flush left, and with only an initial capital letter. 6) Authors?affiliations should be shown by numbered footnotes at the bottom of the first page.
The submission packet must include four copies; one original and three photocopies. Each figure should be mounted in its appropriate place on each of the four copies of the manuscript.
