Illustrations
Do not embed figures and/or tables in text.
Illustration and table captions must be submitted with the manuscript in a separate list and on a separate sheet. All tables and illustrations should be numbered consecutively throughout the paper using Arabic numerals. (Examples: Fig. 1. and Table 1). All illustrations should be provided in separate files and as hardcopy on separate sheets.
Line drawings should be high-contrast laser printouts. Use dark black ink on high-quality opaque white paper. Avoid tracing and textured papers. Line drawings should preferably all require the same degree of reduction, and should be submitted on paper of the same size as, or smaller than, the main text to prevent damage in transit.
Illustrations must fit a one- or two-column format (8.25 or 17.75 cm overall width) on the journal page, the one-column format being preferred. Make sure to use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork. Please submit the line drawings in the actual size. Original illustrations that do not need to be reduced will yield the best quality. Once reduced, all characters within an illustration should be at least 1.5 mm height. Ensure that nothing is hand-drawn or hand-labeled in your figures.
For micrographs and other photographs, please provide glossy prints clearly identified on the back with the figure number.

Color illustrations
Photographs should be submitted as clear black-and-white prints on glossy paper. However, illustrations can be printed in color when they are judged by the Editor to be essential to the presentation. The publisher and author will each bear part of the extra costs involved.
The charge to be passed on to authors of articles containing color figures is EUR 635 for the first page containing color and EUR 317 for each additional page containing color (prices are subject to change). Upon acceptance of your paper, the publisher will send you a consent form. If you know at this stage that you do not wish color reproduction, please provide suitable black and white alternatives.

Keywords
A maximum of four keywords should be indicated below the abstract to describe the contents of the manuscript. Keywords should be selected, if appropriate, from the following classes: theoretical methods, experimental methods, phenomena, materials, and applications. A recommended list of current keywords used for indexing in the Journal is published regularly. This list may also be obtained from the Editor or at
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/tsf, by selecting "How to Submit" at the top bar. Click to go to the keyword list

Preparation of the electronic version of manuscripts
Media. Submissions should be made on a double-density or high-density 3.5" floppy disk, Zip-disk or CD-ROM.
Disk format. Disks formatted for either IBM PC compatibles or Apple Macintosh are preferred. If you can provide either of these, our preference is for the former.
Label. Label all disks with the journal title, the first author name, the disk format, the file formats, and the name of the files.
Electronic submission. Manuscript submitted electronically must comply with the preparation rules described below.

Main Text
Articles prepared using any of the more popular word-processing packages are acceptable but please note the following points. Hard copy. The disk must always be accompanied by hard-copy versions of the article, and the content of the two must be identical. The text on the disk must be the same as that of the final refereed/revised manuscript. No deviations from the version accepted by the Editor are permissible without the prior and explicit approval of the Editor.
File formats. The article must be saved in the native format of the word processor used, e.g. WordPerfect(r) or Microsoft Word(r). However, if a non-western version of these word processors is used, save the file in rich text format (RTF).
Authors who use LaTeXs should utilize the Elsevier LaTeX package. See the Author Gateway at
http://authors.elsevier.com for additional information.
Presentation. Do not use options such as automatic word breaking (hyphenation), justified layout, double columns or automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However, you are encouraged to use your word processor's facilities to indicate text attribute, such as bold face, italic, subscript, superscript, etc. When preparing tables, if you are using a table grid, please use only one grid for each separate table and not a grid for each row. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align the columns not spaces.
Do not embed figures and tables in the core of the text.
Keyboard discipline and accuracy. Please take care to distinguish properly between the digit 1 and the letter l (also 0 and O). Use tabs for indents (paragraphs), not space or the indent function. Use your word processor spell check.

Graphics
Although there are still a large number of technical difficulties to overcome, we are processing graphic files in a growing number of cases. Especially for computer-generated halftones (micrographs [AFM, STM, TEM, SEM, etc.] and images) better results can be achieved when reproducing from electronic files.
The following requirements are to be met:
Hard copy in all cases (for non electronic submission). Since we cannot a priori guarantee the usability of your electronic file(s), hard copies of all illustrations should accompany the accepted printout of the manuscript. One set should be in publishable condition. Character font. Please use the system fonts: Symbols, Times, Helvetica, Univers, or Arial only.
Separate files. Figures should be provided in separate files from the text document in a suitable file format. Use the first author's last name and the figure number as filename, example Smith_Fig2a.tif. Name your files using the correct software extension, e.g. *.tif, *.eps, *.jpg.
Figures file format and resolution. We cannot accept files saved in the format of the application the figures were created. The following formats/resolution should be adhered to.
Line art:

Send in as black and white TIFF files, with a minimum resolution of 1000 pdi.

Send in as EPS files, absolute minimum line width of 0.5 pt, preferred minimum line width of 1 pt. Do not place bitmap images within the EPS file, but send these in as TIFF, instead, as indicated above.

Files of scanned line drawings are acceptable only if done at a minimum of 1016 dpi.

Halftone and halftone-line art combination:

Send in grey scale TIFF files, with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (no lettering), or 500 dpi when there is lettering.

Color images:

Send in as CMYK encoded JPEG images, Maximum quality.

Send in as CMYK encoded EPS files.

Do not compress TIFF files unless you use LZW (Macintosh) compression.

Computer generated graphics should be produced in gray scale if to be published in black & white. Graphics should be created near to the size they will be finally printed. This will help with the lettering and resolution of your files, as the resolution will be lost if we have to enlarge a file. Drawings made in WordPerfect or Word have too low resolution; only if made at a much higher resolution (1016 dpi) can they be used.
Authors using graphic applications that do not allow a full control of the resolution of the TIFF or JPEG export format, such as Microsoft(r) Excel, should generate post-script files (*.ps or *.eps) by printing their graphs to a file after choosing a generic, high resolution post-script printer driver. User of Originlab(tm) Origin and SigmaPlot(r) should verify the resolution of their exported TIFF or JPEG files and, if necessary, generate a higher resolution post-script file. Viewers can be used to verify the content of post-script files.

After acceptance:
Notification. The corresponding author will be notified by the editor of the acceptance of the article and urged to supply an electronic version of the accepted text, if this is not already available (usually this request is made at revision stage). Also an electronic version of illustrations will be asked for.
Copyright transfer. In the course of the production process you will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
Page proofs. When page proofs are made and sent out to authors, this is in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting (or file conversion) process. No changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript will be accepted.

Author benefits:
No page charges. Publishing in Surface Science is free.
Free offprints. The corresponding author will receive 25 offprints free of charge. An offprint order form will be supplied by Elsevier for ordering any additional paid offprints.
Discount. Contributors to Elsevier Science Journals are entitled to a 30% discount on all Elsevier Science books.

Guide to Online Submission

Introduction

Welcome to the Elsevier online submission service. This service has been designed to be as easy as possible to use. Authors can upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word?/I> or WordPerfect?/I>. It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe?Acrobat?PDF format, but if the article is accepted it will be necessary to send in the original source files.

The system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Note: articles are converted into PDF for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards.

Click here for a walkthrough of the online submission process

What to submit?
Journal specific guidelines on types of article accepted and how to prepare your article can be found in the Author Gateway journal page, in the Guide for Authors.

File Formats
Word Processor Formats
Please submit your article as a file in one of the following formats:

MS Word 6

MS Word 97

MS Word 98 for Macintosh?

MS Word 2000

WordPerfect 6.1 or higher

RTF

Important notes on word processor file preparation

For review purposes you must submit your article as a SINGLE FILE. You need to embed all your figures and tables within this file.

Fonts: Please choose Times, Times New Roman, Courier, Arial or Helvetica fonts as much as possible. Other fonts (e.g. Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) character fonts) may cause the PDF conversion to fail. If your manuscript does not correctly convert to PDF, replace the font(s) where necessary and try again.

Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for you to apply excessive layout styling. In addition, avoid options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns, automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However, do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts, etc.

For the production of your article you will also have to submit your graphic files separately as high resolution graphics. (See also the section on Electronic Artwork below.)

LaTex
For general instructions on how to prepare an article using LaTeX, see the Latex file guidelines. In addition, please note the following:

Include all your graphics in the LaTeX file, e.g. with the \includegraphics from the graphics package.

Submit any special class (or style) files and other macro files with your article. We are using an up-to-date TeX installation (TeXLive5d), so you need not include any of the standard packages.

PDF
If possible, please submit the original LaTeX or word processor files: this website will take care of converting them into a PDF file.

If you wish to create your own PDF, download the ES_review.joboptions to the "Settings" folder of your Acrobat Distiller and choose the "ES_review" joboptions before converting your file.

Note: This joboptions file is for Adobe Distiller v4.05 and later. If you are still working with an older version, or if you need more help, see. PDF settings .

File naming
To avoid confusion, please make sure your file has a short, descriptive name. Short means less than 30 characters and descriptive means names like figure1.tif and smith-article-version1.doc.

Electronic Artwork
For the production of your paper in the journal we need high-resolution graphic files in either TIFF or EPS. For information on how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission, see http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

The online submission process

1.       Find the journal on the Author Gateway by searching or browsing

2.       Read the 'Guide for Authors' for specific instructions on submitting a paper to that journal

3.       Click on the 'online submisssion' link in the right hand journal services box

4.       Log in if you are already a registered user (if you are not already a registered user you need to 'create a profile' by submitting your contact details and choosing a username/password combination). This creates a completely secure environment to send your paper to us online.

5.       Once you are logged in you are taken to the Journal's submission page where you choose to 'Submit New Paper'. You are taken through the following steps:

                         i.            Enter data related to your manuscript (Title, Authors, Keywords etc.)

ii.            Choose the accepting Editor. (if the Journal has more than one Editor, you will find a drop-down list with the names of all the Editors of this Journal to whom you may submit your article. The journal Guide for Authors will give you more information on how to decide which Editor to choose)

iii.            Upload your manuscript file(s). See the section on File Formats for more information.

iv.            The website creates a PDF from your source file(s). You must check this PDF as it will be sent to the reviewers. If the PDF is not OK edit and resubmit your source file(s) or contacts author support for advice - PDF/PostScript source can be submitted as well as LaTeX/Word Processor files.

                       v.            Upload your figures separately for the production process and select how you want your figures to appear in print (colour or black and white). If the figures are too large (>5 Mb) you may send manually direct to the editor.

vi.            Check your submission details are correct and press submit to send your files to the journal editor

6.       You will receive an acknowledgement email to say the paper is under review

7.       Until the review process is completed you will not be able to update your submission from the website. If you have made a mistake you must contact the editor.

If revision is required:

1.       You will receive an email from the editor

2.       You can revise your paper by using the link in the email which takes you back to the online submission service (when revising your paper all the previous information is retained - no retyping is needed but it can be updated and new files attached). Alternatively you can access the paper directly from the Journal's online submission page or from 'my home' on the Author Gateway.

3.       Make any changes necessary and add or remove figures/other files

4.       A revised PDF is created which is sent to the editor at the end of the process and you receive an acknowledgement email

5.       Once your new version is submitted you will not be able to make any further revisions from the website

After submission
For information on the status of your article, please contact the Editor to whom you submitted your article. There is an email link to the editor in the journal's online submission service or on 'my home' in the Author Gateway.

Final decision:
You will receive an email containing the final decision of the Editor, containing editorial comments.

After acceptance
Once your paper has been accepted you can track its progress from your home page on the Author Gateway. It will automatically move from the 'Online Submissions' section of 'my home' to 'Accepted Papers'. From here you can view the progress of your paper through the production process to the final published article.
