About the journal

A Journal of Statistics for the Physical, Chemical, and Engineering Sciences

Since its inception in 1959, the mission of Technometrics has been to contribute to the development and use of statistical methods in the physical, chemical, and engineering sciences.

Technometrics publishes papers that describe new statistical techniques, illustrate innovative application of known statistical methods, or review methods, issues, or philosophy in a particular area of statistics or science, when such papers are consistent with the journal's objective. Since 1959, the methods presented in the journal have reflected changes in the discipline.

In recent years, some of these changes have been associated with improved computer technology and availability, resulting in highly flexible and computer-intensive approaches to scientific data analysis. (See for example the lead article in the August 1998 issue by Richard A. Becker, Linda A. Clark, and Diane Lambert entitled "Events Defined By Duration and Severity, with an Application to Network Reliability," with discussion by Jeff Robinson and Josef Schmee.) With the emergence of massive computing and data storage capabilities, statistical approaches to screening, flexible modeling, pattern characterization, and change detection that were infeasible 20 years ago are now viable. There have also been shifts in basic attitudes about data analysis (e.g., less formal hypothesis testing, more fitted models via graphical analysis), and in how some of our important application areas are managed (e.g., quality assurance through robust design rather than detailed inspection).

Many of the problems in industry today concern the analysis of huge data sets that lead to improved quality or better understanding of the manufacturing or development process. The journal would like to encourage submissions that address problems of this nature and that take advantage of modern resources.

Instructions to Authors

The purpose of Technometrics is to contribute to the development and use of statistical methods in the physical, chemical, and engineering sciences. This objective places a premium on clear communication among statisticians and practitioners of these sciences and an emphasis on the application of statistical concepts and methods to problems that occur in these fields. The journal will publish papers describing new statistical techniques, papers illustrating innovative application of known statistical methods, expository papers on particular statistical methods, and papers dealing with the philosophy and problems of applying statistical methods, when such papers are consistent with the journal's objective. Every article shall include adequate justification of the application of the technique, preferably by means of an actual application to a problem in the physical, chemical, or engineering sciences. All papers must contain a short, clear summary of contents and conclusions. Mathematical derivations not essential to the flow of the text should be placed in an appendix. Only rarely will papers requiring more than 25 double-spaced typed pages be accepted. Brief descriptions of problems requiring solution and short technical notes that clearly pertain to the journal's purpose will also be accepted for publication. Concise letters to the editor will be published when they are considered timely and appropriate. Further instructions for the preparation of manuscripts are given on the inside of back cover.

Submission

Authors should check their manuscripts for conformance with the Technometrics editorial policy stated above.

SUBMITTING ARTICLES TO Technometrics

The editor of Technometrics prefers to receive your article submissions as PDF or PS files (printable on 8.5 x 11 paper). Please submit a blinded, as well as an unblinded version. Send files by email to the editorial office at technometrics@stat.ohio-state.edu or send an email message with a pointer to an ftp or http site from where these files can be downloaded. See Information for Authors for details.

For Technometrics Book Reviews, email files that can be printed out as editable copy (WORD, WordPerfect, or FAXed as last resort). No need to mail hard copies. Email to the editorial office at walberjc@bp.com.

If submitting hard copy, four good copies of new manuscripts should then be submitted to the office of Editor:

William I. Notz
Department of Statistics
The Ohio State University
1958 Neil Avenue
Columbus, OH 43210
win@stat.ohio-state.edu

Two copies should include the authors' names and institutional or company affiliations. The other two should not contain this information but should be otherwise identical. Any supporting documents written by one or more of the authors should be submitted in the same manner. Copies are nonreturnable. Authors should retain their original manuscripts for correction and revision. Photocopies and computer-printed copies of manuscripts are acceptable only if completely legible. Articles giving results based on computation should provide enough information to enable readers to evaluate the quality of the results. When results depend on computer programs that are not available commercially, authors may be asked to submit machine-readable copies of these programs so that they may be checked by reviewers.

Technometrics uses a double-blind referee process for all submissions; the editor and associate editors will know the identity of the authors, but referees will not. Authors are responsible for writing their papers in such a way as to make blind review possible, and they agree by their submission to cooperate in this process.

Copyright

Articles that have been published previously or that are under review by another journal must not be submitted to Technometrics. Copyright Transfer to American Statistical Association is a condition of publication.

Preparation

LaTeX
Manuscripts submitted in LaTeX (any version) should use the "article" style and should not use any special macros.

Each manuscript should be formatted to print on one side of a page, completely double- spaced, with wide margins at the sides, top, and bottom. Each manuscript should include a brief abstract of fewer than 100 words, followed by a list of no more than six key words and phrases used in the article. They key words should identify the main topics in the article and should be suitable for indexing, but they should not repeat words that appear in the article's title. See instructions for examples of key words and phrases.

Footnotes and References

Footnotes should be replaced by remarks in the text or placed in an appendix. References within the text should give the authors' names, followed by the year of publication in parentheses. References should be listed in alphabetical order at the end of the manuscript, after any appendixes but before any tables and figures.

In this list, each reference should contain, in the following order, the last name and initials of the author followed by those of the coauthors, year of publication, title of reference, source, volume number, and page. Do not abbreviate journal titles. References to books must include the publisher's name and location. Only list references actually cited in the text.

Tables and Figures

Tables and figures are numbered with Arabic numerals and referred to in the text by number. Original figure artwork must be submitted in camera-ready condition when the article is accepted for publication. Figures must be visually clear and capable of withstanding reduction. All bars, rules, words, symbols, and numbers must be typeset or done in black tape or Indian ink. Photocopies and figures prepared with colored inks are not acceptable. A separate list of captions should be provided with the camera-ready figures. The type for the captions will be set with the manuscript.

Mathematical Formulas

Formulas should be typewritten, and symbols not available on a typewriter must be carefully inserted in ink. Authors should remember the typographical difficulties of complicated mathematical formulas. The difference between capital and lowercase letters should be clearly shown. Care should be taken to avoid confusion between such pairs as zero and the letter O , the numeral 1 and a the letter l , 1 used as a superscript and prime (\prime), alpha and a , kappa and k , mu and u , nu and v , eta and n , and so forth. Subscripts and superscripts should be clearly below or above the line. Variables are automatically italicized by the typesetter and should not be underlined on manuscripts. Boldface letters may be indicated by a wavy underline on the manuscript. Complicated exponentials should be represented by the symbol exp; that is, $\exp(a^2 + b^2)$ should be used in place of $e^{(a^2 + b^2)}$.

Fractions in the body of the text (and when possible in displayed expressions) and fractions occurring in the numerators or denominators of fractions should be written with the solidus; that is, $(a + b)/(c + d)$ rather than

$${{a+b}\over{c+d}}.$$
