About the journal

 Talanta

Talanta, published monthly, provides a forum for the publication of original research papers, preliminary communications, annotations and reviews in all branches of pure and applied analytical chemistry. Letters to the editors will be considered for publication. Analytical data should be submitted only if they are clearly related to analytical measurements.

Original research papers on fundamental studies and novel instrumentation development are especially encouraged. The latter include physical, inorganic and organic chemistry measurement instrumentations that are unique, and chemical sensors. New electronic developments are welcome. Novel applications in areas such as clinical chemistry, environmental analysis, geochemistry and materials science and engineering, etc. are welcome. Since classical spectrophotometric measurements and applications, solvent extraction, titrimetry, etc. are well established, studies in such areas should demonstrate a unique and substantial advantage over presently known systems. Solvent extraction methods in particular, but others as well, should focus on the use of non-hazardous material substitutes and the minimization of waste generation. Studies with new reagents or systems should be as comprehensive as possible, rather than a series of similar papers for several elements or compounds. Contributions will be expected to be of the high standard set and maintained by Talanta and to make a definite and useful contribution to analytical chemistry.

Instructions to Authors

Guide for Authors

General

Papers submitted for publication should be new publications. The submission of a paper is held to imply that it has not previously been published in any language, that is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted for publication it will not be published elsewhere without the written approval of the Editors-in-Chief and consent of the Publisher.

Online Submission of Papers Authors are encouraged to submit their paper online to one for the journal editors by using the Online Submission tool for Talanta. To submit online authors should upload their article as a Microsoft?(MS) Word? WordPerfect? LaTeX or PostScript via the journal's Author Gateway homepage at: http://authors.elsevier.com/journal/talanta. The submission tool generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. It is crucial that all graphical and tabular elements be placed within the text, so that the file is suitable for reviewing. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Full instructions how to use the online submission tool are available at the online submission website of the journal.

Mailing of Manuscripts

Authors who prefer to submit their manuscript by post should submit three copies of their paper. Authors are requested to include a note of their fax number and E-mail address when submitting their manuscript. Manuscripts should be presented in double-spaced typescript.

Contributions from North and South America, India, China, Japan, Australia and countries in that half of the world should be sent to:

Professor Gary D. Christian, Department of Chemistry, University of Washington, Box 351700, Seattle WA 98195-1700, USA, Fax number: (206) 685 3478, E-mail: christia@chem.washington.edu

Contributions from Europe, the Middle East and Africa should be sent to:

Professor Jean-Michel Kauffmann, Univerist?

Refereeing of Papers

All papers submitted are refereed by experts who advise the Editors-in-Chief on the matter of acceptance in accordance with the high standards required and on the understanding that the subject matter has not been previously published and that the authors accept full responsibility for the factual accuracy of the data presented and have obtained any necessary authority to publish. Referees will be encouraged to present critical and unbiased reports which are designed to assist the author in presenting material in the clearest and most unequivocal way possible. At the discretion of the Editors-in-Chief, the names of referees may be disclosed if thereby agreement between author and referee is likely to result. Authors should appreciate that the comments of referees are presented in a constructive spirit, and that agreement between the views of author and referee must result in a higher standard of publication.

Preliminary communications will be refereed urgently and will be accorded priority in publication. Letters to the editors will not be refereed, but will be published at the discretion of the Editors-in-Chief. If accepted, they will also be given priority. All papers accepted are subject to editorial amendment if necessary.

Presentation of manuscripts

Papers must be written in English. Because of the particular importance for analytical methods to be correctly reproducible great care should be taken to ensure that the style and quality is clear and unambiguous. Authors for whom English is a foreign language are recommended to have the paper thoroughly checked and corrected before submission. After the title of the paper and the authors' names the following should be given: (i) the establishment where the work was done, (ii) a summary of the essential contents of the paper, (iii) an indication of the principal author for correspondence. Where possible, papers should follow the pattern: Introduction, Experimental, Results and Discussion, References, or such of these sections as apply.

The presentation of tables, graphs and formulae should be kept to an absolute minimum and where possible the results from a series of investigations should be in a table form or as a graph. The same data should not be presented in both tables and figures or given in the Discussion as well as the Experimental section.

Tables and Figures

Tables should be so constructed as to be intelligible without reference to the text, every table and column being provided with a heading. Units of measure must always be clearly indicated. Unless it is essential to the argument, tables should not list the results of individual experiments, but should summarize results by an accepted method of expression (e.g. standard deviation). The same information should not be produced in both tables and figures. Footnotes to tables should be indicated by superscript letters. Figures should be provided as carefully prepared line drawings about twice the final size on plain white drawing paper, suitable for direct photographic reproduction. The original line drawings should be supplied with one of the copies of the manuscript. Each figure should be clearly marked on the back with the names of the authors and the figure number. Figure captions should be typed on a separate sheet.
Straight-line calibration graphs are not generally permitted: the necessary information can be included in the text (e.g. in the form of an equation).
More information on the preparation of your illustrations can be found at
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.

Nomenclature

All references should conform as closely as possible to the rules established by IUPAC.

References

In the text refer to the subject or to the author's name (without initial), followed by the reference number in square brackets; the full references should be given in a list at the end of the paper in the following form:

[4] A.B. Smith, The Effect of Radiation on Strength of Metals, A.E.R.E., M/R6329, 1962.

[5] N. Feldstein, U.S. Patent 3,574,644, 1971.

Journal-name abbreviations should be those adopted by the Chemical Abstracts Service (Bigliographic Guide for Editors and Authors, The Americal Chemical Society, Washington, DC, 1974). If the correct abbreviation is not known, the title should be given in full.

Articles on Disk

Authors are encouraged to submit final and accepted manuscripts on disk. Two copies of the printout should always be included. Disks must be clearly marked with at least the following: Operating system, disk format (DS/DD), software package used, Authors' names, short title of the paper.

Proofs & Reprints

Proofs, together with transfer of copyright and reprint order forms are despatched direct from the printers to the principal author (as indicated on the paper when submitted) for his or her approval and correction. After careful checking and correction these proofs should be returned without delay to Talanta, Elsevier Science Ltd., Bay 15K, Shannon Industrial Estate, Shannon, Co. Clare, Ireland. Fax: +353 61 472144.

Authors are kindly requested when proof reading to correct only those errors introduced by the printer. Modification to the text at proof stage will necessarily cause a delay in publication and incurs additional costs which may have to be charged to the authors or their institutions.

The publisher reserves the right to publish the paper without waiting for corrected proofs to be returned by the author, if waiting would cause undue delay.

Copyright: Authors are requested to read the note on copyright published inside the covers of each issue. Publication of paper may have to be delayed until a signed transfer of copyright agreement has been received. Authors are recommended to send the agreement at the same time as the proofs are returned.

Reprints: 25 free reprints will be provided to the principal author. Authors should indicate the number of additional paid reprints required when returning their proofs.

Guide to Online Submission

Welcome to the Elsevier online submission service. This service has been designed to be as easy as possible to use. Authors can upload their article as a LaTeX, Microsoft?(MS) Word?/B> or WordPerfect?/B>. It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe?Acrobat?PDF format, but if the article is accepted it will be necessary to send in the original source files.

The system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Note: articles are converted into PDF for the review process but may be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards.

What to submit?
Journal specific guidelines on types of article accepted and how to prepare your article can be found in the Author Gateway journal page, in the Guide for Authors.

File Formats
Word Processor Formats
Please submit your article as a file in one of the following formats:

MS Word 6

MS Word 97

MS Word 98 for Macintosh?

MS Word 2000

WordPerfect 6.1 or higher

RTF

Important notes on word processor file preparation

For review purposes you must submit your article as a SINGLE FILE. You need to embed all your figures and tables within this file.

Fonts: Please choose Times, Times New Roman, Courier, Arial or Helvetica fonts as much as possible. Other fonts (e.g. Chinese, Japanese and Korean (CJK) character fonts) may cause the PDF conversion to fail. If your manuscript does not correctly convert to PDF, replace the font(s) where necessary and try again.

Most formatting codes will be removed or replaced on processing your article so there is no need for you to apply excessive layout styling. In addition, avoid options such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns, automatic paragraph numbering (especially for numbered references). However, do use bold face, italic, subscripts, superscripts, etc.

For the production of your article you will also have to submit your graphic files separately as high resolution graphics. (See also the section on Electronic Artwork below.)

LaTex
For general instructions on how to prepare an article using LaTeX, see the
Latex file guidelines. In addition, please note the following:

Include all your graphics in the LaTeX file, e.g. with the \includegraphics from the graphics package.

Submit any special class (or style) files and other macro files with your article. We are using an up-to-date TeX installation (TeXLive5d), so you need not include any of the standard packages.

PDF
If possible, please submit the original LaTeX or word processor files: this website will take care of converting them into a PDF file.

If you wish to create your own PDF, download the
ES_review.joboptions to the "Settings" folder of your Acrobat Distiller and choose the "ES_review" joboptions before converting your file.

Note: This joboptions file is for Adobe Distiller v4.05 and later. If you are still working with an older version, or if you need more help, see.
PDF settings .

File naming
To avoid confusion, please make sure your file has a short, descriptive name. Short means less than 30 characters and descriptive means names like figure1.tif and smith-article-version1.doc.

Electronic Artwork
For the production of your paper in the journal we need high-resolution graphic files in either TIFF or EPS. For information on how to prepare your artwork for electronic submission, see
http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

The online submission process

Find the journal on the Author Gateway by searching or browsing

Read the 'Guide for Authors' for specific instructions on submitting a paper to that journal

Click on the 'online submisssion' link in the right hand journal services box

Once you are logged in you are taken to the Journal's submission page where you choose to 'Submit New Paper'. You are taken through the following steps:

Enter data related to your manuscript (Title, Authors, Keywords etc.)

Choose the accepting Editor. (if the Journal has more than one Editor, you will find a drop-down list with the names of all the Editors of this Journal to whom you may submit your article. The journal Guide for Authors will give you more information on how to decide which Editor to choose)

Upload your manuscript file(s). See the section on File Formats for more information.

The website creates a PDF from your source file(s). You must check this PDF as it will be sent to the reviewers. If the PDF is not OK edit and resubmit your source file(s) or contacts author support for advice - PDF/PostScript source can be submitted as well as LaTeX/Word Processor files.

Upload your figures separately for the production process and select how you want your figures to appear in print (colour or black and white). If the figures are too large (>5 Mb) you may send manually direct to the editor.

Check your submission details are correct and press submit to send your files to the journal editor

You will receive an acknowledgement email to say the paper is under review

Until the review process is completed you will not be able to update your submission from the website. If you have made a mistake you must contact the editor.

If revision is required:

You will receive an email from the editor

You can revise your paper by using the link in the email which takes you back to the online submission service (when revising your paper all the previous information is retained - no retyping is needed but it can be updated and new files attached). Alternatively you can access the paper directly from the Journal's online submission page or from 'my home' on the Author Gateway.

Make any changes necessary and add or remove figures/other files

A revised PDF is created which is sent to the editor at the end of the process and you receive an acknowledgement email

Once your new version is submitted you will not be able to make any further revisions from the website

After submission
For information on the status of your article, please contact the Editor to whom you submitted your article. There is an email link to the editor in the journal's online submission service or on 'my home' in the Author Gateway.
