About the journal

Surveys in Geophysics publishes refereed overview articles on the physical, chemical and biological processes occurring within the Earth, on its surface, in its atmosphere and in the near-Earth space environment, including relations with other bodies in the solar system. Observations, their interpretation, theory and modelling are covered in papers dealing with any of the Geosciences and related areas.
The papers present balanced and well constructed reviews of recent advances in areas of topical interest, written for the broad geophysical community, i.e. all Earth scientists having some background in science, especially physics, whether they are working in academia, government or industry. The nature and level of the review articles, which appear as soon as is practicable after the pioneering work that they describe, is such that graduate students will find them very useful.
The subjects dealt with in Surveys in Geophysics comprise all areas covered by the EGU, IUGG and AGU - all aspects of the solid Earth, geodesy, oceans and atmosphere, meteorology and climate, hydrology, environmental issues, solar-terrestrial and space physics, plus the physics of the Moon and the terrestrial-type planets. The physics of the exploration for natural resources, including new methods and techniques of applied geophysics, natural hazards, biogeosciences and instrumentation are also covered, as are nonlinear processes. Novel diagrams are especially encouraged.
Readers of Surveys in Geophysics thus not only have available mature, thoughtful reviews of recent developments in their own field but also keep up to date in areas outside their own. The journal's breadth of coverage, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, makes Surveys in Geophysics one of the leading specialist publications in the Earth sciences.

Instructions to Authors

Manuscripts intended for publication should be written in English and submitted as hard-copy printout (triplicate) and on diskette to:

Surveys in Geophysics
The Journals Editorial Office
Kluwer Academic Publishers
P.O. Box 990
3300 AZ Dordrecht
The Netherlands

Manuscripts in LaTeX

Surveys in Geophysics prefers the submission of papers in LaTeX: however, papers submitted for conventional typesetting can also be accepted. The supply of accepted-for-publication papers in their final form on MS-DOS or Apple Macintosh diskettes in LaTeX together with a hard-copy version (in case anything needs to be checked) will ensure more rapid publication. A LaTeX style file can be obtained from the Publisher: http://www.wkap.nl/authors/jrnlstylefiles/

Manuscripts for conventional typesetting

A most important part of any review paper is the Introduction, which clearly sets the scene for the paper. Discussing why the subject is important, and the rationale for the paper, it defines what is explained in detail in the paper, and also what is not covered. Another important part is the Conclusions section, which pulls together in an innovative way the threads of what is explained in the body of the paper; bullet points can be extremely helpful. The way forward is also discussed here. The Abstract summarises concisely and interestingly the most significant issues raised in the paper and, finally, the main conclusions reached.

All manuscripts for conventional typesetting should be typed on one side of A4 paper (8 1/2 x 11 inch), with margins at least 1 1/4 inches (3.0 cm) on all sides. All material should be double-spaced, including quotations, notes, bibliographies, and figure captions. Quoted passages of more than 40 words should be set off from the text by indenting the left-hand margin five spaces. Pages should be numbered consecutively throughout the manuscript. If you are requesting blind refereeing, the author's name and address should be given on a separate sheet. Please make sure that there is no way of identifying you from your manuscript. Otherwise put your name, institutional affiliation and full address at the beginning of the article, after the title. Articles will normally comprise 15 to 40 pages in print (say 30 to 80 pages of double-spaced typing), and each article should include an Abstract, an Introduction, and a Summary.

Enquiries from prospective authors who may wish to prepare survey articles will be welcomed by the Editor and members of the Editorial Board, who will also be glad to assist authors by reviewing outlines, preliminary drafts of the Abstract, Introduction, and Summary, or even the entire article. Either British or American spelling of English, is acceptable so long as it is consistent through the article.

Key Words

Six to ten key words should be provided by the author, to appear on a line following the abstract.

Formulae

Mathematical formulae should be included, as necessary. However, details of extensive mathematical derivations which are available in referenced literature should be omitted. Similarly, extensive tabular material which can be referenced should be omitted. Formulae should be typewritten if possible. Subscript and superscripts should be indicated clearly as such. For a decimal sign, use of full stop; crosses should be reserved for multiplication. In the typescript vectors are to be indicated by wavy underlining. Please make a clear distinction between the letter 'o' and the zero symbol, also between the number '1' and the letter 'l', [kgr] and k, ?and u, ? and v, [eegr] and n, etc. Unusual signs should be identified in the margin.

Units

All scientific and technical data presented should be stated in SI units, except in unavoidable circumstances.

Footnotes

Footnotes should be avoided if possible, and kept to an absolute mimimum when essential.

References

References should be listed at the end of the article in alphabetical and chronological order, always with full titles and first and last page numbers, in the following style:

Cordier, J.-P.: 1985, Velocities in Reflection Seismology, D. Reidel, Dordrecht.

Matsui, Y. and Kawamura, K.: 1984, 'Computer Simulation of Structures of Silicate Melts and Glasses', in I. Sunagawa (ed.), Materials Science of the Earth's Interior, D. Reidel, Dordrecht, pp. 3-23.

Jarvis, M. J.: 2001, 'Antarctica's Role in Understanding Long-Term Change in the Upper Atmosphere', Surveys in Geophysics 22, 155-174.

Figures

All photographs, graphs and diagrams should be referred to as a 'Figure' and they should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). Multi-part figures ought to be labeled with lower case letters (a, b, etc.). Please insert keys and scale bars directly in the figures. Relatively small text and great variation in text sizes within figures should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Figures may be sized to fit approximately within the column(s) of the journal. Provide a detailed legend (without abbreviations) to each figure, refer to the figure in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Please place the legends in the manuscript after the references.

Hard-copy figures

Original or good quality printouts of all figures should be submitted with the manuscript. Computer generated printouts should be flawless and on good quality paper. Non-computer generated line figures should be drawn with Indian ink on white matt paper or tracing paper. Photographs should be in black-and-white on glossy paper. If a figure is to be in colour (author's expense), please supply the highest quality possible so that the figure can be scanned. Slides, glossy photos and computer generated printouts on glossy photo quality paper are acceptable. On the reverse side of each figure, the name of the (first) author and the figure number should be written in pencil; the top of the figure should be clearly indicated.

Electronic figures

You should supply the electronic versions of your figures. We prefer figures in TIFF, EPS, PS, PDF and Microsoft® Office format. Be aware that we may not be able to use other file formats and that the hard copy may be scanned instead. For vector graphics, EPS is the preferred format. For bitmapped graphics, TIFF is the preferred format. The following resolutions are optimal: line figures - 600 - 1200 dpi; photographs - 300 dpi; screen dumps - leave as is. Colour figures can be submitted in the RGB colour system. Font-related problems can be avoided by using standard fonts such as Times Roman, Courier and Helvetica. Figures should be saved in separate files. The figure legends should be included in the text file.

Tables

Each table should be numbered consecutively (1, 2, etc.). In tables, footnotes are preferable to long explanatory material in either the heading or body of the table. Such explanatory footnotes, identified by superscript letters, should be placed immediately below the table. Please provide a caption (without abbreviations) to each table, refer to the table in the text and note its approximate location in the margin. Finally, please place the tables after the figure legends in the manuscript.

Permissions

It is the responsibility of the author to obtain written permission for quotation from unpublished material, or for all quotations in excess of 250 words in one extract or 500 words in total from any work still in copyright, and for the reprinting of illustrations or tables from unpublished or copyright material.

Copyright

Copyright of articles will be established in the name of Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Proofs

The author will receive two sets of page proofs of the article, together with an annotated copy of the typescript, and is requested to return one corrected proof to the publishers without delay.

Offprints and fees

50 offprints of each article will be provided free of charge. Additional offprints can be ordered on the forms sent with the proofs. No page charges are levied on authors or institutions. However, foldouts or illustrations in colour must be paid for by the author. A range of foldouts and colour illustrations is available. Colour work ranges from full-colour halftones (most expensive) to two-colour (black plus one other colour) line figures (generally most economical). Costs can be reduced if color illustrations can be submitted as color separates. The costs of foldouts depend on the number and variety of folds. The publisher will provide a price quotation on receipt of a detailed specification. If color illustrations and/or fold-outs are necessary, please contact the publishers in advance.

Authors which have been invited by the editor personally and in writing are entitled to a free one year subscription of the journal.
