About the journal
Studies in History and Philosophy of Science is devoted to the integrated study of the history, philosophy and sociology of the sciences. The editors encourage contributions both in the long-established areas of the history of the sciences and the philosophy of the sciences and in the topical areas of historiography of the sciences, the sciences in relation to gender, culture and society and the sciences in relation to arts. The Journal is international in scope and content and publishes papers from a wide range of countries and cultural traditions.
Instructions to Authors
The Editors of Studies in History and Philosophy of Science welcome historical, philosophical and sociological studies of the Sciences. The orientation of the journal is international, with contributions from a wide range of cultural standpoints.
Contributions should not exceed 10,000 words, except by prior agreement with the Editors. They should be sent to The Editors, Studies in History and Philosophy of Science, Department of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Cambridge, Free School Lane, Cambridge CB2 3RH, UK. Manuscripts will not be returned unless postage is pre-paid.
Studies uses the peer review system; articles submitted prepared for blind review will be blind reviewed.
Submissions should be in duplicate, on quarto or A4 paper. They should be in a 12-point font and at space 2, including the notes and the reference list. The notes should be at the end, on separate sheets, and should be referred to in the text by superscript numbers. The name and address of the author should be at the beginning of the text on a separate sheet, and the acknowledgements at the end on a separate sheet. Titles and other material to be printed in italics should be underlined.
The name (date) system should be used in text and footnotes. The reference list at the end should be in the following style:

Authors will be asked, if their paper is accepted, to supply the final version of the contribution, together with up to 6 keywords and an abstract of up to 200 words on disk as well as hard copy.
Authors should provide good-quality copies of illustrations with the necessary permissions for reproduction of copyright material. Permission and reproduction fees are the responsibility of authors. All figures and tables should have their numbers pencilled on the back, and their placement should be indicated in the text; captions should be together on a separate sheet. Illustrations will be returned only if so requested at the time of final submission.
Electronic Submission
Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com.
Proofs
Proofs will be sent to the author (first-named author if no corresponding author is identified of multi-authored papers) and should be returned within 48 hours of receipt. Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore, it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive e-mail or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.
Offprints
Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.
Copyright
All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before their article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, without the author relinquishing his/her proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations. It also includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction or publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright already exists.
