About the journal

Solar Energy Materials & Solar Cells is intended as a vehicle for the dissemination of research results on materials science and technology related to photovoltaic, photothermal and photoelectrochemical solar energy conversion. Materials science is taken in the broadest possible sense and encompasses physics, chemistry, optics, materials fabrication and analysis for all types of materials.
Of particular interest are:
Solar Cells, covering single crystal, polycrystalline and amorphous materials utilising homojunctions and heterojunctions, Schottky barriers, liquid junctions and their applications. Also of interest is analysis of component materials, individual cells and complete systems, including their economic aspects.
Photothermal Devices, in the broadest sense, including solar absorber devices, heat storage materials, radiative cooling systems and their applications.
Photoelectrochemical and Photochemical Devices, covering photoelectrodes, photocatalysis, photoconversion and solar desalination systems and their applications.
Optical Properties of materials, including light trapping, texturising, solar concentrators which include imaging and non-imaging optical collectors.
Light Control, including systems for energy efficient architecture and daylighting, chromogenics and smart windows.
The pertinent issues are comprehensive and encompass bulk materials, coatings and thin films and surface treatments, from basic as well as from applications-oriented and manufacturing related perspectives

Instructions to Authors

General
The journal accepts both full-length research papers and shorter communications (Letters). For regular papers please submit your manuscript in triplicate to the Editor-in-Chief. Submission of your manuscript is welcome provided that it, or any translation of it has not been copyrighted or published, and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere. For Letter papers, please submit your manuscript to Dr Greg Smestad.

Upon acceptance of an article, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the Publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. Manuscripts should be prepared for publication in accordance with instructions given in the "Guide for Authors" (available from the Publisher) details of which are given below.

Types of contributions
The journal welcomes the following types of contributions:

  • Original research articles
  • Review articles, providing a comprehensive review on a scientific topic
  • Fast Communications: Short, self-contained articles on ongoing research, or reporting interesting, possibly tentative, ideas, or comments on previously published research are published in the Letters Section.

To whom can I submit my manuscript?
Regular manuscripts should be submitted in triplicate to the Editor-in-Chief:
C.M. Lampert
Star Science
8730 Water Road
Cotati, CA 94931-4252, USA
E-mail: cmlstar@juno.com

Letters papers should be submitted in triplicate to the Letters Editor - Dr Greg Smestad
G. Smestad
P.O. Box 51038

E-mail: smestad@solideas.com

Alternatively, regular manuscripts originating from Europe, India or Japan may be submitted to the appropriate area editor:

Area Editor for India

Each paper should be introduced by three to five keywords as well as by a self contained abstract of no more than 100 words, not counting the formulas.

Please make sure that the paper is submitted in its final form. Corrections in the proof stage other than printer's errors should be avoided: costs arising from such corrections will be charged to the authors.

Footnotes should be avoided if possible or be brief. They should be numbered consecutively.

References should be consecutively numbered, as in the following examples: books [1], articles in journals [2], papers in a contributed volume [3,4], unpublished papers [5].

Figures should be provided in a form suitable for photographic reproduction and reduction. Lettering should be uniform of size corresponding to the anticipated reduction.

Hand-written lettering on figures is not acceptable. Figures should be identified by arabic numerals and the captions should be typed, double-spaced, on a separate sheet rather than lettered on the figures themselves. Photographs and coloured pictures must be of impeccable quality. Please note that for colour photographs the publisher will charge the printing costs to the author. A final accepted manuscript may be submitted in paper only (typed on one side in double spacing with wide margins). An accepted article may also be submitted in electronic form (a LaTeX file, or as a file from other wordprocessors).

Electronic submission: Non-LaTeX
Only the final accepted manuscript can be submitted on disk, along with a paper-printed version which is identical to the file. Please label the disk with your name, and mention which wordprocessor you have used. The electronic text should be prepared in a way very similar to that of conventional manuscripts. The word-processed text should be in single column format. Keep the layout of the text as simple as possible; in particular, do not use the wordprocessor's options to justify the text or to hyphenate the words.Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://authors.elsevier.com

The manuscript may contain parts (e.g. formulas or complex tables) or last-minute corrections which are not included in the text on diskette; however, if this is the case then the differences with the diskette version should be clearly marked on the manuscript.

Illustrative material (original figures or high-quality glossy prints, or photographs showing a sharp contrast) should be included separately.

Author Benefits

  • No page charge is due
  • 25 offprints of each contribution free of charge
  • 30% discount on Elsevier Science books (see Catalogue)

Author Enquiries:
Authors can keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

For specific enquires on the preparation of electronic artwork, consult http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork/.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.

Instructions to Authors - Letters
These instructions should be read in conjunction with the general instructions detailed above. Letters are intended as brief reports of significant, original and timely research which warrant rapid publication. In considering a manuscript for publication, particular attention will be given to the originality of research, the desirability of speedy publication, the clarity of the presentation and the validity of the conclusions. Letters will be published in approximately 5 months and should have a size of 5 printed pages or less. Authors should also be sure to give full and accurate address, telephone, fax and e-mail details to ensure that authors proofs and any queries are dealt with as rapidly as possible. All letters papers should be sent to:
