Instructions to Authors

Note to Authors: please make sure your contact address information is clearly visible on the outside of all packages you are sending to Editors.***

General points
Address manuscripts to the Editorial Office, Attn. Lolo Humble, Department of Primary Health Care, P O Box 454, SE-405 30 Gothenburg, Sweden.

All papers are published in English.

All material submitted for publication is assumed to be submitted exclusively to the SJPHC and should conform to the uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals (Vancouver style; see for instance BMJ 1991;302:338-41 or www.icmje.org).

Before the final decision to publish an article is made by the Editor-in-Chief, all submitted manuscripts are evaluated by referees.

All authors must give signed consent to publication.

Give the name and address of the author to whom correspondence and proofs should be sent.

Express all scientific measurements (except blood pressure) in SI units; spell out numbers up to and including 10; use numerals for all other numbers. Give generic names of drugs whenever possible; brand names may follow in parentheses. Initials may be used (without points) for well-known abbreviations, such as WHO.

The author must warrant that whenever appropriate, any patient or participant mentioned in the text or shown in a photograph has given informed consent to publication of such material. When informed consent has been obtained, it should be indicated in the published article.

Submit two copies of the manuscript and illustrations to SJPHC, and keep one copy for reference. Type all manuscripts in double spacing, references and tables included.

Electronic Manuscripts
The final, and only the final, manuscript should be submitted on diskette along with two copies of the printout. The electronic files and the printout must be identical. The diskette should be labelled with your name and the name of the computer platform and version of the word processing system you have used. Please observe that Taylor & Francis can receive files from any word processing system; however styled Microsoft Word files are preferred. Graphic elements should be kept as separate files in EPS- or TIFF-format. Halftones and color photos should be included separately.

Please contact the Editorial Office for guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript.

Please use these simple guidelines when preparing your electronic manuscript:

Please be consistent. The same elements should be keyed in exactly the same way throughout the manuscript.

Do not break words at the end of lines. Use a hyphen only to hyphenate compound words.

Enter only one space after the full stop at the end of a sentence.

When emphasizing words, please use the italic feature of your word processor software.

Do not justify your text; use a ragged right-hand margin.

Use a double hyphen (--) to indicate a dash in text.

Do not use the lowercase l for 1 (one) or the uppercase O for 0 (zero).

The space bar should only be used as a word separator. Use TAB when indenting paragraphs or separating columns in tables.

Please keep graphic elements (e.g. images) as separate files (e.g. EPS- or TIFF-files). Originals of good quality can also be submitted as usual.

Please print out the submittal form, fill it out and send it together with your diskette and printed copies to the Editorial office:

Department of Primary Health Care,
P O Box 454,
SE-405 30 Gothenburg,
Sweden.

For further information and support, please send mail to: post@tandf.no

Points specific to each section
Arrange the manuscript in the customary order: Abstract, Introduction, Material and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Legends, Tables and Figures. The length of an original article must not exceed 2000 words and have no more than five tables or figures, and 20 references. Only in exceptional cases, when special reasons have been given, can longer manuscripts and a larger number of references be accepted.

Short papers. We also welcome short papers, not exceeding 600 words, one table or figure, and six references , mainly with the purpose of publishing new important results without delay.

Supplements and special papers: Apart from the quarterly issues, reports from medical meetings, medical theses or extra long articles can be published as supplements to the journal, but at the author's expense. Moderately long articles can be published as Special papers on extra pages within the Journal itself, but again at the author's expense.

The title page should bear the title (brief but comprehensive) containing words necessary for correct indexing, name(s) of authors(s), and institution, location, country. State number of words in the article (body of text, excluding abstract, tables, reference list, including acknowledgements), and give name and address of author to whom proofs are to be sent.

Page two should carry a structured Abstract, not exceeding 200 words, followed by Key words, according to Index Medicus. The abstract should contain the following mandatory headings: (headings within brackets are optional): Objective, Design, Setting, (Intervention), Subjects (or patients), Main outcome measures, Results, Conclusion (Implications).

Discussions The editors encourage structured discussions (not mandatory) with the following suggested structure:
1) Statement of principal findings;
2) Strengths and weaknesses of the study;
3) Strengths and weaknesses in relation to other studies, discussing particularly any differences in results;
4) Meaning of the study; possible mechanisms and implications for clinicians or policy makers;
5) Unanswered questions and future research.

Acknowledgements should be limited to substantial contributions and financial support.

References must conform to the Vancouver style, being numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in text and tables with arabic numerals. List all authors for each source when six or less; when seven or more, give first six + et al. Quote title in full, the journal's title abbreviated according to the style used in Index Medicus, year of publication, volume number and first and last page numbers, English translation of title in brackets after title in other language, followed by 'English summary', if present.

Figures (halftones and line drawings) can be submitted camera-ready. They must be professionally drawn and photographed, and letters, numbers and symbols must be clear and in proportion to each other.

Tables. Each table should be typed doublespaced on a separate sheet, with heading and number (roman numerals). Tables should not duplicate information given in the text of the article.

Announcement. On a separate page authors should (one or two lines) state/explain why they consider their paper important to read: As a GP you will learn from my/our paper that ...

Proofs. Authors are requested to check their proofs carefully for printer's errors and return them promptly to the publisher. Alterations or additions will as a rule not be accepted when they deviate from the original typescripts.

Early Electronic Offprints: Corresponding authors can now receive their article by e-mail as a complete PDF. This allows the author to print up to 50 copies, free of charge, and disseminate them to colleagues. In many cases this facility will be available up to two weeks prior to publication. Or, alternatively, corresponding authors will receive the traditional 50 offprints. A copy of the journal will be sent by post to all corresponding authors after publication. Additional copies of the journal can be purchased at the author’s preferential rate of ?5.00/$25.00 per copy.
