About the journal

Safety Science serves as an international medium for research in the science and technology of human safety. It extends from safety of people at work to other spheres, such as transport, leisure and home, as well as every other field of man's hazardous activities.

Safety Science is multidisciplinary. Its contributors and its audience range from psychologists to chemical engineers. The journal covers the physics and engineering of safety; its social, policy and organisational aspects; the management of risks; the effectiveness of control techniques for safety; standardization, legislation, inspection, insurance, costing aspects, human behaviour and safety and the like.

Safety Science will enable academic researchers, engineers and decision makers in companies, government agencies and international bodies, to augment their information level on the latest trends in the field, from policy makers and management scientists to transport engineers.

The journal focuses primarily on original research papers across its whole scope, but also welcomes state-of-the-art review papers and first hand case histories on accidents and disasters of special significance. The emphasis is on safety risks, as distinct from health risks, but may include both.

Instructions to Authors

The editors would like to draw the attention of potential authors to a paper by Shannon, Robson & Guastello,"Methodological criteria for evaluating occupational safety intervention" which appeared in volume 31 (2) of the journal. This gives some very useful indications of the sort of criteria which the journal uses to judge papers presented for publication. The paper is partly based on the experiences of reviewers in the past, and the shortcomings they have found in manuscripts sent to them for assessment. We hope that you find the paper useful in planning research and in writing it up in a suitable form for publication.

SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Papers on Safety Technology (e.g. fire and explosion, reliability, risk assessment methodologies, machinery safety, protective equipment) should be submitted to J. Saari, Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, Topeliuksenkatu 41 aA, Helsinki, Finland. All other papers (e.g. accident analysis, human factors, management, policy) should be submitted to Professor A.R. Hale, Delft University of Technology, Department of Technology & Society, Safety Science Group, Kanaalweg 2b, 2628 EB Delft, The Netherlands. E-mail:
safety.science@tbm.tudelft.nl, including any papers where it is not clear to you under which category it falls.
Types of contributions. The journal welcomes research papers, short communications, letters to the Editor, announcements of forthcoming conferences or symposia, book reviews and reports of recent events and developments in the safety field. Prospective authors of review papers are advised to contact one of the Editors prior to commencement. All papers are refereed and are expected to attain a high standard of content, clarity and conciseness. Because of Safety Science's international character, jargon should be avoided and terms rigorously defined. Contributors should take particular care to define all terms used in statistical analyses and, where relevant, apprise readers of their country's legis lative background to their subject. This applies particularly to the use of the term accident, the reportability of which differs from country to country. Particular emphasis is laid on full referencing. The Harvard System of references is used: in the body of the text a paper is referred to by the author's surname with the year of publication in parentheses, and at the end of the paper complete references are given alphabetically by authors' surnames. Examples of references are as follows:

Journal article
Näätanen, R., Summaia, H., 1974. A model for the role of motivational factors in drivers' decision-making. Accident Analysis and Prevention 6, 243-261.

Chapter in book
Jackson, N., Carter, P., 1992. The perception of risk. In: Ansell, J., Wharton, F. (Eds.). Risk: Analysis, Assessment and Management, Wiley, Chichester, pp. 41-54.

Published report
Health and Safety Commission (HSC), 1993. Third Report: Organising for Safety. ACSNI Study Group on Human Factors. HMSO, London.

Manuscript preparation. Three copies of the manuscript should be submitted in double-spaced typing on pages of uniform size with a wide margin on the left. The top copy should bear the name and full postal address of the corresponding author, together with telephone and fax numbers, and if available an e-mail address. A summary of 100-200 words is required. References should be collected in an alphabetical list at the end of the paper.
Illustrations. Line drawings should be in a form suitable for reproduction, drawn in Indian ink on drawing paper. They should preferably all require the same degree of reduction, and should be submitted on paper of the same size as, or smaller than, the main text, to prevent damage in transit. Photographs should be submitted as clear black-and-white prints on glossy paper. Each illustration must be clearly numbered. Legends to the illustrations must be submitted in a separate list.
All tables and illustrations should be numbered consecutively, and separately throughout the paper.
Language. The principal language of the journal is English, but papers in French and German will be published.

Submission of electronic text
In order to publish the paper as quickly as possible after acceptance, authors are encouraged to submit the final text also on a 3.5" or 5.25" diskette. Please note that the journal can accommodate manuscripts prepared with most commercially available software packages. Please observe the following criteria: (1) specify what software was used, including which release (e.g. WordPerfect 6.0); (2) specify what computer was used; (3) include both text file and ASCII file on the disk; (4) the file should be single-spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature (i.e. no returns at the end of each line). All textual elements should begin flush left, no paragraph indents. Insert two returns after every element such as title, headings, figure and table callouts etc.; (5) label the disk with the journal name, the last name of the first author, and the name of the text and ASCII files on the disk: (6) submit the disk accompanied by three copies of the hard copy, typed double spaced. Make sure that the disk and the hard copy match exactly; (7) retain a backup copy of the disk and a copy of the manuscript for reference and safety.

PROOFS
Before publication authors' proofs will be sent to the corresponding author. It is important that authors read the proof carefully and answer all queries on the page proofs and return both proofs and original manuscript to the publisher within a short time (48 hours). Except for typographical errors, changes should be kept to a minimum and rewriting the text is not permitted. Authors may be charged for changes other than the correction of typographical errors. Please note that authors are urged to check their proofs carefully before return, since the inclusion of late corrections cannot be guaranteed.

ARTICLES IN PRESS
Authors can view their accepted papers in the "Articles in Press" section on
ScienceDirect
The section "Articles in Press" contains peer reviewed and accepted articles to be published in this journal. When the final article is assigned to an issue of the journal, the "Article in Press" version will be removed and will appear in the associated journal issue. Please be aware that "Articles in Press" do not have all bibliographic details available yet. There are two types of "Articles in Press":
? Uncorrected proofs: these are articles that are not yet finalized and that will be corrected by the authors. Therefore the text could change before final publication. Uncorrected proofs may be temporarily unavailable for production reasons.
? Corrected proofs: these are articles containing the authors' corrections. The content of the article will remain unchanged, and further corrections are not possible. The only difference with the finally published article is that specific issue and page numbers have not yet been assigned.

REPRINTS
The corresponding author will receive a form for ordering reprints and full copies of the issue in which the paper appears. Twenty five free reprints are provided; orders for additional reprints must be received before printing in order to qualify for lower prepublication rates. All co-author reprint requirements should be included on the reprint order form. Reprint forms, copyright forms and page proofs should be returned to: Elsevier Science Ltd, Bampfylde Street, Exeter EX1 2 AH, UK.

COPYRIGHT
All authors must sign the 'Transfer of Copyright' agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Elsevier Science Ltd to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the authors' proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microform or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, and includes the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, including reproduction in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any figures for which copyright exists.

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.
