Instructions to Authors The collaboration between author and publisher officially begins with the submission of a book proposal and ends with the marketing of the publication to the widest possible audience. These guidelines establish the framework for a successful collaboration by explaining the roles of the author and the publisher at each of the four stages of the process:
- submitting a proposal
- An acquisitions editor is responsible for the organization of a publishing program in a particular area of study. In that capacity, the editor reviews new proposals, negotiates agreements with authors, and advises the author on the development of the book through peer reviews, market surveys, and knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of competitive works. The publishing agreement details the terms and conditions of publication, including length of the final work, the physical preparation of the text and graphics, the securing of permissions, the schedule for completion of the manuscript, payment of royalties, allowable author corrections, and index preparation.
- preparing a manuscript
-
After the publishing agreement is signed, please consult this section for detailed instructions on the preparation of the text and illustrations. Preparation of materials for publication differs significantly from the preparation of materials for the Internet, display presentations, or other media. Although the emphasis during this stage is on content, it is useful for the publisher to review samples of electronic files for text and graphics early in the writing process to ensure that the files are in a proper and usable format.
- production of the book
- marketing of the book
Each section describes the role of the relevant department at Springer, provides instructions for the preparation and review of materials, and explains the time frame for the completion of these tasks. Authors should focus on the first two stages, during which their participation is most extensive. Implementing these guidelines will result in a more accurate, attractive, timely, and cost-efficient publication.
