Submitting to AGU Journals
AGU editors welcome contributions from authors throughout the world. The decision to accept a contribution for publication is made by the journal editor solely on the basis of suitability of subject matter to the focus of the journal, originality of the contribution, and scientific merit. The editor has complete responsibility and authority to accept a submitted article for publication or to reject it. The editor may confer with associate editors or reviewers for an evaluation to use in making this decision.
See what the Publications Committee members are saying about AGU's transition to Electronic Publishing.
File formats for accepted articles. Authors will be asked to provide final manuscripts and artwork as electronic files (MSWord, WordPerfect or LaTeX for text; EPS or TIFF for images).
Submitting Manuscripts Electronically
GEMS (Geophysical Electronic Manuscript System) allows authors to submit manuscripts online to be edited, reviewed, and published in electronic formats. All journals are moving to this system. Below is a list of journals currently accepting manuscripts in GEMS for the review process:

Acceptable file formats for the review process:
¡¤ Microsoft Word (.doc files), Corel WordPerfect (.wpd files), LaTeX, and Portable Document Format (.pdf).
¡¤ Artwork in true encapsulated postscript (.eps) files and/or Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) file. Guidelines for Submitting Images has more information about submitting electronic files for all types of digital artwork.
Acceptable file formats for the production process
¡¤ Authors can access macros and templates for MS Word, Word Perfect, and LaTeX for help in preparing manuscripts to AGU specifications. These formatting instructions are accessed at the AGU Formatting Toolkit.
¡¤ For additional information on manuscript preparation see "Information for Journal Contributors".
¡¤ Links to additional topics of interest to authors are provided in the Tools for Authors page.
To use GEMS:
¡¤ When you first link to GEMS, you will be asked to register. This registration is good for all journals for the purposes of submission as well as review.
¡¤ You will need to have the names of the files you intend to submit.
¡¤ You will be asked to provide the following:
o An abstract as a separate file.
o Index terms (a principal term and up to three additional index terms)
There will be hot links throughout the process to guide you through this online submission process.
Auxiliary Materials [Electronic Supplements]. Color figures, oversize maps, videotape, or electronic supplements that cannot be included in the print journal may be provided as auxiliary material. While auxiliary materials are not essential to understanding of the article and its conclusions, the reviewers will determine the relevance of the material. The material must meet the technical standards set for usefulness and archival purposes. As of 2002 the electronic version of the article will be the archival record. See the Guidelines for information about submitting these materials.
