About the journal
Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia
PASA is an ISI-listed, fully refereed journal for new and significant research in astrophysics. With a strongly international author base, PASA maintains a focus on areas of research relevant to Australian astronomy.
Instructions to Authors
The Journal publishes papers in all branches of astronomy and astrophysics, including instrumentation and software development. The refereeing and acceptance of papers is supervised by an Editorial Board appointed by the Astronomical Society of Australia. A paper submitted for publication should contain original and significant research, or a description of a new technique or instrument, unless it is an invited review or historical article. While most papers will be approximately five journal pages in length, longer papers of sufficient scientific merit are welcome. Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published before in essentially the same form, that it has not been submitted for publication elsewhere, and that all authors and the institutions where the work was carried out agree to its publication.
Preparation of Manuscripts
Your research should be presented concisely and clearly and in English. The Introduction should give a brief background to the work and provide a clear statement of the aims of the paper. The Conclusions should summarise in general terms the major findings. Authors are encouraged to note the typographical conventions displayed in recent issues of the Journal. Observing these conventions will shorten the interval between submission and publication. The Editor reserves the right to return for revision papers which are not presented according to these Instructions.
When preparing your manuscript, please use the PASA LaTeX template, or, alternatively, the PASA Word template, available from the Electronic PASA world wide web site at http://www.atnf.csiro.au/pasa/. If you are unable to obtain a copy of the PASA templates from the above world wide web site please contact the Editor at the address below and a copy can be sent to you. If it is not possible for you to use the PASA templates, you can prepare your manuscript using plain TeX, plain LateX or plain Word.
It is important to note that the use of style files from other journals is NOT acceptable and articles submitted which use such style files will be returned for correction. For submission the manuscript should be typewritten or computer-printed on singlesided A4 paper, following the format of the PASA templates. All pages must be numbered consecutively, including the acknowledgements, references and appendices. When preparing your manuscript electronically, it is preferable to embed any figures and tables in the text in an appropriate location soon after their first mention. Instructions on how to do this are given in the PASA templates.
Addresses The full postal address of each author must be given, including email where available.
Abstract This should state briefly the scope of the work and the principal findings, and should be suitable for direct reproduction by abstracting services; usually this will not require more than 200 words.
Keywords A list of no more than six keywords from the standard list used by all astronomical journals should be included. The standard list may be found in the Astrophysical Journal (ApJ) annual index.
Section headings should be numbered and be in bold type on the left-hand margin. In LaTeX please use the "section" and "subsection" commands as instructed in the PASA LaTeX template.
Mathematical Equations should be displayed on a separate line with two line spaces above and below. Keep in mind the width of a printed column and break equations accordingly. Displayed equations should be numbered sequentially throughout the paper, not section by section. In the main text, make use of the solidus to avoid two-line fractions. The exp(x+y) form is preferred to e with a superscript x+y and, similarly, the square root sign should be avoided in favour of a one-half power.
Units should follow the SI or International System of Units (Systeme International d'Unites). SI units are strongly preferred but long-standing, non-SI units in common usage in astronomy will be tolerated (eg angstrom, solar mass, jansky). Units which are not SI units must be defined by their equivalent in SI units (in parentheses) on their first appearance in the text.
References PASA has adopted the ApJ style of referencing within the text and in the reference list. This style may be found in section 1.9 of the ApJ Instructions to Authors at the end of the first issue every month for Part 1. All references must be listed at the end of the text, with names of authors arranged alphabetically. Use the following abbreviations for the core journals:

Soviet Astronomy | Tables are numbered and must be referred to in the text. They should be arranged with regard to the dimensions of the printed page, i.e. one or two columns in width. The number of columns within each table should be kept to a minimum. Long headings to columns can be avoided by the use of explanatory footnotes.
Figures Authors are encouraged to prepare their illustrations electronically, both line diagrams and half-tone images, in postscript format or encapsulated postscript format.
Authors unable to prepare electronic illustrations should submit original hardcopy artwork with their manuscripts. Such figures are to be lettered in the 'Times' typeface and be suitable for direct reproduction. Most figures will be reduced to fit either the one- or two-column dimensions of the page. The minimum typesize after reduction should be 8 pt. Thus, for the preferred reductions of figures to 40, 50, 65 or 80% of their linear dimensions, the typesize of your original lettering should be 20, 16, 12 or 10 pt respectively.
Please note that line drawings and half-tone images must be numbered in the same sequence. Each figure must be referred to in the text.
Submission Three paper copies of the manuscript should be submitted to the Editor at the following address:
Editor Dr M. C. Storey Publications of the Astronomical Society of Australia ATNF, PO Box 76 Epping, NSW 2121 Australia
Fax (02) 9351 7726 International Fax +61 2 9351 7726 Telephone (02) 9372 4533 International Telephone +61 2 9372 4533 Email mstorey@atnf.csiro.au
The electronic version of your paper should not be sent until the paper has been accepted for publication. At that stage, the Editor will advise you on how to submit the final electronic version of your manuscript. Proofs will normally be sent to the first author. Please note that reprints are not available.
