About the journal

  Progress in Surface Science

Progress in Surface Science on ScienceDirect(Opens new window)

Progress in Surface Science publishes progress reports and review articles by invited authors of international stature. The papers are aimed at surface scientists and cover various aspects of surface science. Papers in the new section Progress Highlights, are more concise and general at the same time, and are aimed at all scientists. Because of the transdisciplinary nature of surface science, topics are chosen for their timeliness from across the wide spectrum of scientific and engineering subjects. The journal strives to promote the exchange of ideas between surface scientists in the various areas. Authors are encouraged to write articles that are of relevance and interest to both established surface scientists and newcomers in the field.

Instructions to Authors

General Criteria for Acceptance of Manuscripts
Manuscripts should contain a newly written, consistent overview of recent progress of some topic of Surface Science. They do not need to be comprehensive or 'complete', but must contain a novel compilation and arrangement of material available in the literature. Emphasis on recent progress is strongly encouraged. A personal assessment of the status of the field reviewed is encouraged, but personal opinions of the authors and facts accepted in the field should be clearly identifiable for the reader. At least the introductory and summary sections of the regular progress reports and review articles should be assessable and valuable for most surface scientists. Progress Highlights should be accessible to all physical scientists. The position of the topic discussed within the field of Surface Science should be identified. Articles entirely focused on the practitioners of the topic are not encouraged. All reviews are refereed by at least one anonymous referee.

Submission of Papers
Papers should be submitted only upon invitation from an Editor of the journal. Potential authors are invited to submit brief descriptions of proposed articles to Prof. Kleyn or to a member of the Editorial Board, prior to the preparation of full-length manuscripts. For contact details see the journal inside cover.

Note: Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher.

Manuscript Preparation

General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, double-spaced with wide margins on one side of white paper. Good quality printouts with a font size of 12 or 10 pt are required. The corresponding author should be identified (include a Fax number and E-mail address). Full postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. An electronic copy of the paper should accompany the final version. The Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of uniformity. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since we cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is asked to return original material after use.

Abstracts: An abstract of approximately 200 words summarising the purpose and results of the paper should be supplied.

Keywords: Ten keywords should be supplied for indexing and cross referencing.

Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Abstract, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Vitae, Figure Captions and then Tables. Do not import the Figures or Tables into your text. The corresponding author should be identified with an asterisk and footnote. All other footnotes (except for table footnotes) should be identified with superscript Arabic numbers.

Symbols: Symbols and formulae should be typed neatly in position with appropriate space above and below to distinguish them from the text. Subscripts and superscripts should be typed clearly as such, and the manuscript should be reviewed carefully to ensure that there is no ambiguity in their presentation. Numbers and letters which are intended to be sub- or superscripts should not align with the rest of the text.

References: All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript. In the text refer to references by a number in square brackets on the line (e.g. Since Balazs et al. [1]), and the full reference should be given in a numerical list at the end of the paper.
References should be given in the following form:
[1] A.C. Balazs, C. Singh, E. Zhulina, S.-S. Chern, Y. Lyayskaya, G. Pickett, Theory of polymer chains tethered at interfaces, Prog. Surf. Science 55 (1997) 181-269.
[2] F.X. Smith, Atomic Processes and Reactivity, Pergamon, New York, 1985.
[3] C. Bartlett, Building and managing the transnational: the new organization challenge, in: M.E. Porter (Ed.), Competition in Global Industries, Harvard Business School Press, Boston, 1986, pp. 367-401.

Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as "Figure(s)"and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. They should accompany the manuscript, but should not be included within the text. All illustrations should be clearly marked on the back with the figure number and the author' s name. All figures are to have a caption. Captions should be supplied on a separate sheet.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph. Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork.

Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to grey scale (for the printed version should you not opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white prints corresponding to all the colour illustrations.

For further information see http://www.elsevier.com/locate/authorartwork

Tables: Tables should be numbered consecutively and given a suitable caption and each table typed on a separate sheet. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).

Electronic submission

Authors should submit an electronic copy of their paper with the final version of the manuscript. The electronic copy should match the hardcopy exactly. Always keep a backup copy of the electronic file for reference and safety. Full details of electronic submission and formats can be obtained from http://www.elsevier.com/locate/disksub or from Author Services at Elsevier Science.

After acceptance

Important. When page proofs are made and sent out to authors, this is in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting (or file conversion) process. No changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript will be accepted.

Copyright transfer. In the course of the production process you will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Author benefits

No page charges. Publishing in Progress in Surface Science is free

Free offprints. The corresponding author will receive 25 offprints free of charge. An offprint order form will be supplied by the publisher for ordering additional paid offprints.

Discount. Contributors to Elsevier Science journals are entitled to a 30% discount on all Elsevier Science books.

Authors enquiries

Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted article, and set up e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature of Elsevier's Author Gateway.

Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided when an article is accepted for publication.
