About the journal

Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Taking the format of four issues per year, the journal aims to discuss new developments in the field at a level suitable for the general nuclear and particle physicist and also, in greater technical depth, to explore the most important advances in these areas. Although the majority of the articles will be in one or other of the fields of the title of the series, a particular effort is made to treat topics of an interface type for which both particle and nuclear physics are important, in particular such matters as the role of mesons, isobars and quarks in nuclear structure and the use of complex nuclei for probing fundamental particle symmetries. Other topics such as the application of nuclear physics in the medical and archaeological fields will also be treated from time to time. Astrophysicists, too, will be particularly interested in the Editor's inclusion of articles on nucleo-genesis and related matters.

Instructions to Authors

Submission of Papers
Authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and original figures (included in the text) to the Editor, either as hard copy original accompanied by two copies, or by e-mail, as a zipped postscript.
For all correspondence concerning the scientific contents of your article please refer to:
Professor Dr. A. Faessler, Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of Tuebingen, Auf der Morgenstelle 14, Tuebingen D-72076, Germany;
Tel: +49 7071 2976370; Fax: +49 7071 295388; E-mail: Amand.Faessler@uni-tuebingen.de
Submission of a paper implies that it has not been published previously, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that if accepted it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the publisher. Full responsibility for the paper rests with the author. You must have taken the necessary steps to obtain permission for using any material that might be protected by copyright.
Preprints may be posted on electronic public servers, but authors are strongly encouraged to mention that the article has been submitted for publication in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics http://www.elsevier.nl/locate/ppartnuclphys).

Papers which do not comply with the instructions below may suffer long delays in production and may be returned to the author for retyping to these specifications. Authors should use their judgment in handling items not covered by these instructions. Should authors not be able to comply with these instructions, would they please contact the Editor or the Publisher. Authors should retain a copy of their manuscript since the publisher cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers. Original manuscripts are discarded one month after publication unless the Publisher is specifically requested to return original material after use.
Corrections to the paper cannot be undertaken by the Publisher, or the Symposium Editor if it is for Conference Proceedings. The Symposium Editor has the right to omit your paper from the Proceedings if it does not comply with the instructions.

Types of Contributions
In principle, papers are written and submitted by invitation of the Editor, although he would be glad to receive suggestions. Proposals for review articles (approximately 500-1000 words) should be sent by the corresponding author to the Editor at the address as listed above. The Editor will evaluate proposals on the basis of timeliness and relevance, and inform the corresponding author as soon as possible. All submitted papers are subject to peer review.

Manuscript Preparation
In order to achieve rapid publication, the texts in the journal Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics will be printed directly from the authors' typescripts. The authors are therefore fully responsible for the quality of their article and are kindly requested to observe the following instructions for the preparation of their typescripts. To ensure that typescripts are published with the minimum delay it is essential that much greater care than usual be taken with the typing. Authors writing in a language that is not their own are strongly advised to obtain the help of a suitable colleague to ensure that the typescript is clear and grammatically correct. Please have your final drafts read by at least two other persons before submission.
General: Manuscripts must be typewritten, single spaced, on one side of white paper. Good quality print outs with a font size of 12 pt are required in black ink. The text dimensions must be no larger than 27.0 cm high by 18.5 cm wide. Times (Roman) font is preferred. Do not indent when starting a new paragraph; leave one line between paragraphs. Although single spacing is preferable, highly mathematical papers with extensive use of super- and subscripts in text may be typed in 1.5 spacing throughout. Number each page lightly with a blue pencil. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible.
Abstracts: An abstract should precede the text, giving a brief account of the most relevant aspects of the paper (100-200 words).
Keywords: Please supply one or more PACS-1999 codes and up to 5 keywords of your own choice in order to indicate the main topics discussed in the paper and to provide basic terms for indexing. PACS codes can be looked up at our web page: www.elsevier.nl/locate/pacs/
Text: Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title, Authors, Affiliations, Contents List, Abstract, PACS codes, Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References.
First page: Start with the article title, names(s) of the author(s) and affiliations(s).
Second page: List of Contents, Abstract, PACS codes, Keywords. The main text is to follow from a new page onwards. Authors are requested to supply, on a separate sheet, the name(s) and address(es) to which communications should be sent.
Headings: Authors are requested to restrict the use of headings to two levels where possible. Headings should be numbered. The headings should be presented as given below: Main headings should be typed bold and flush to the left-hand side margin. Leave a space of two lines above and one line below these headings. Subheadings should be typed in italics and flush to the left-hand margin.
Footnotes: Footnotes should be avoided if possible. Necessary footnotes should be denoted in the text by superscript consecutive numbers. The footnote should be typed single spaced, and in a smaller font size, at the foot of the page on which it is mentioned. The footnote should be separated from the main text by a line extending halfway across the page. Leave a two-line space above the footnote line.
Equations: Equations should be typed within the text, centered horizontally, and should be numbered consecutively throughout the typescript. The equation's number should be typed in parentheses, flush with the right-hand margin; no dots leading to numbers. Any symbols should be typed and not handwritten.
Mathematical expression: Where mathematical expressions appear in the text, requiring more space either above or below the line (e.g. where a square root sign or a superscript number appears), then the line containing such characters should be 1.5 spaced below the preceding line and above the following line. Simple expressions should be left in the text, typed on one line, using the solidus (i.e. a/x) instead of a two-line form wherever possible to avoid awkward line spacing. Subscripts and superscripts should be clearly typed as such, and the typescript should be scrutinized carefully to ensure that there is no ambiguity in the way in which they appear.
References: The number system of references is to be used, i.e., the references are listed at the end of the chapter in the order in which they appear in the text (where they are referred to by their number in square brackets); the reference list should quote the authors' name(s), the title of the journal (or book), volume number, year of publication and page number, respectively. References should be given in the following form:
Illustrations: All illustrations should be provided in camera-ready form, suitable for reproduction (which may include reduction) without retouching. Photographs, charts and diagrams are all to be referred to as 'Figure(s)' and should be numbered consecutively in the order to which they are referred. All figures are to have a caption. If the manuscript is submitted as a zipped postscript, the figures must be included. Each illustration should have a space of approximately 1 cm above and 0.5 cm below. The figure caption should be typed below the illustration. The word 'Figure' should be shortened to 'Fig.' at the beginning of the figure caption and it should be shortened to 'Fig.' in the text except where it begins a sentence, when it should be spelled out in full - 'Figure'. Figure captions should be typed flush to the left-hand margin and should not exceed the right-hand margin.
Line drawings: Good quality printouts on white paper produced in black ink are required. All lettering, graph lines and points on graphs should be sufficiently large and bold to permit reproduction when the diagram has been reduced to a size suitable for inclusion in the journal. Dye-line prints or photocopies are not suitable for reproduction. Do not use any type of shading on computer-generated illustrations.
Photographs: Original photographs must be supplied as they are to be reproduced (e.g. black and white or colour). If necessary, a scale should be marked on the photograph (Micrographs). Please note that photocopies of photographs are not acceptable.
Colour: Colour artwork can only be reproduced if the author is prepared to pay for the printing costs. Full details are available upon request from Author Services at Elsevier Science.
Tables: Tables are to be typed within the type area. Leave one line space after the text and type the table heading, including the table number, flush to the left-hand margin. Leave one line space between the heading and the table. Tables should be numbered consecutively. Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript lowercase letters. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere in the manuscript, (e.g. in graphs).
Offprints: Twenty-five offprints will be supplied free of charge. Additional offprints and copies of the issue can be ordered at a specially reduced rate using the order form sent to the corresponding author after the manuscript has been accepted. Orders for reprints (produced after publication of an article) will incur a 50% surcharge.

Single Issue Ordering
Corresponding authors can order the (complete) issue in which their contribution appears through the reprint ordering form.
