Instructions to Authors

Submission of Manuscripts

All contributions are peer reviewed by independent referees. Only papers that are of highest scientific quality, that are concisely written and that comply with these Guidelines for Authors can be accepted. All manuscripts (one original and two double sided copies) together with a cover letter from the author of correspondence should be submitted to the Editor Chief:

Prof. Dr. Adolf Nahrstedt
Institute of Pharmaceutical Biology and
Phytochemistry
University of Muenster
Hittorfstr. 56
D-48149 Muenster, Germany

Language of publication is English. Manuscripts written by authors whose mother language is not English should be checked by a native speak er before submission.

Submission of a manuscript to PLANTA MEDICA implies that it represents original research not previously published and that it is not being considered for publication elsewhere. The corresponding author must declare that the manuscript is submitted on behalf of all authors. Copyright belongs to the publisher upon acceptance of the manuscript. There is no page charge. Rejected manuscripts will not be return ed to the authors except for original illustra tions on request.

Authors investigating the chemistry of a single species should aim to publish their results in a single manuscript rather than in a series of papers. Manuscripts that report fragmentary parts of a larger study will be returned to the authors at the Editor's discretion.

Submission of a manuscript signifies accep tance of the journal's Guidelines for Authors.

Format of Manuscripts

Rapid Communications (up to 6 typewritten pages) are intended for the publication of exceptionally significant new and original results, such as unusual structures, bioactivities and innovative analytical techniques that deserve rapid publication. Authors should provide a justification statement with the manuscript, giving reasons why it should be considered for rapid communication. The Editor will decide whether or not the work merits rapid publication. Rapid Communica tions usually will be published 4-5 months after submission. Manuscripts should be written in the form of a Letter (see below) and must not exceed 6 typewritten pages includ ing references. Emphasis should be given to the concise presentation of the results, but sufficient experimental data must be reported to allow other scientists in the field to reproduce the experiments. After acceptance the authors should be prepared to promptly submit their work on a diskette (see below) upon request by the Editor.

Reviews (up to 12 typewritten pages) will generally be invited by the Editor. They should be as concise as possible and do not need to include experimental details. The main purpose of reviews is to provide a concise, accurate introduction to the subject matter and inform the reader critically of the latest developments in this area. 4-6 Key words should be list ed. Maximum length of Reviews is 3000 words or 12 typewritten pages including references.

Papers (up to 12 typewritten pages) are research articles describing original experimental results. The material should be arranged in the order: Abstract, Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion sections. The Experimental Section should contain sufficient details so that others are able to reproduce the experiment(s). Previously reported methods should be referenced only. 4-6 Key words should be listed. Maximum length of Papers is 3000 words or 12 typewritten pages including references. In exceptional and well justified cases longer manuscripts may be accepted.

Letters (up to 4 typewritten pages) should be concise reports on new specific results of general interest. The Letter format contains a short Abstract; no keywords; introductory remarks and results and discussion without headlines; Material and Methods (headline) with brief experimental details without subheadlines; references. In case of spectroscopical work on known substances refer, if possible, to published data; the manuscript should then contain the following indication: \(Copies of the original spectra are obtainable from the author of correspondence.\) In each case spectra or copies thereof are required as corequisite with the manuscript. Maximum length of Letters is about 1000 words or 4 typewritten pages.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Manuscripts must be typed double-spaced throughout - text and references - on regular letter size paper. Manuscripts must be submitt ed with one original (one sided) and two copies (double sided).

For all manuscripts, provide a separate title page (title, full names referenced by Arabic superscripts with affiliation and addresses of all authors, and on separate pages also, a list of references, footnotes, figure legends, and tables.

The Abstract should contain brief information on purpose, methods, results and conclusion.

The name and address of the author responsible for all correspondence including fax and e-mail number should be provided after the references.

References should be numbered in the order in which they are cited in the text [1], [2], [3] ... and the list of references should be arranged consecutively according to the numbers in text. Use Index Medicus abbreviations for journal titles. List the first six authors followed by et al. Authors bear complete responsibility for the accuracy of the references. The following examples illustrate the format for references:

1Trute A, Nahrstedt A. Separation of rosmarinic acid enantiomers by three different chromatographic methods and the determination of rosmarinic acid in Hedera helix. Phytochem Anal 1996; 7: 204-8
2Mabberley DJ. The Plant-Book, 2nd Edition. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press; 1997. p. 520-1.
3Lechtenberg M, Nahrstedt A. Cyanogenic Glyco sides. In: Ikan R, editor. Chichester: Wiley & Sons; 1999. p. 147-91.

If reference is made to papers submitted or in press, authors are requested to enclose a copy of the manuscript or galley proof. Avoid references to unpublished personal communica tions. For Papers a maximum of 20 references is suggested. Recent review articles can substitute for all but the most pertinent original articles.

Tables and Figures must be referred to in the text by Arabic numerals. Provide each with a descriptive legend on separate pages for fig ures. Indicate footnote within tables by super script small letters, and type footnotes below the table. Submit illustrations (apparatus, spectra, chromatograms, X-ray crystal struc tures, etc.) as high quality photographic prints or as camera-ready, original drawings.

IR, NMR, mass, and UV spectra should be given as figures only if new relationships between molecular structures and spectroscopic properties are demonstrated or if new compounds are described where the listing of characteristic signals is not sufficient. Figures of chromatograms will only be accepted if they are essential for understanding the methods or the results described. Number illustrations on the back with a soft pencil; include author's names and indicate the top of the figure. Do not mount prints.

Structural formulas should be prepared using ChemDraw\R or similar programs. For printing they will be reduced to 70% of their original size. Atomic symbols in formula: 10 point Arial; tables and names under formula: 10 point Arial; numbering of atoms: 7 point Arial; letter ing on reaction arrow: 8 point Arial; compound numbers: 10 point Arial bold. Maximum widths of up to 12cm for single column print and up to 25cm for double column print; widths between 12,1 and ca. 15cm should be avoided: Further information will be sent with the editorial letter after evaluation of the manuscript.

X-Ray Crystallographic Data must include a line drawing of the structure, a perspective drawing, and a discussion of bond lengths and angles. A supplement describing full details of the structure and methods and means of its determination in a form suitable for deposi tion must be submitted with the Fachinformationszentrum Energie, Physik, Mathematik, D-76344 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, or a similar information storage centre. The manuscript must state at which storage centre the data have been deposited.

Abbreviations should generally be used spar ingly. In most cases it is appropriate to use the full INN drug name. Provide a list of all non-standard abbreviations on a separate page. Use the metric system for all measurements, if possible. Metric abbreviations should be expressed in lower case without period (cm, ml, s). Define all symbols used in equations and formulas. If symbols are used extensively, provide a list of all symbols together with the list of abbreviations.

Documentation of Plants and Plant Materials: Use the correct botanical nomenclature follow ing the Index Kewensis, The Plant-Book (Mabberley DJ, 2nd edition; ISBN 052144210) and or the International code of botanical Nomenclature (www.bgbm.fu-berlin.de/iapt/nomenclature/code/tokyo-e/default.htm). Give the plant name (underlined or in italic), the author of this name and the plant family. Indicate who identified the plant material. The manuscript must include references to vouch er specimens of the plants or the material examined includ ing their registration number(s). Such specimens should be deposited in a major regional herbarium which permits loan of such material.

Chemical Nomenclature used should be based on the systematic rules adopted by Chemical Abstracts (Index Guide Vol. 76), Ring Index and Supplements (American Chemical Society, 1959-1965), IUPAC (Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry, Parts A, B & C, Pergamon Press, 1979) etc. Trivial names should be avoid ed unless they are definitely advantageous over the corresponding systematic names.

Description of the Isolation and Purification of Compounds: The kind and amount of material, solvents and extraction methods must be indicated. The description of chromatographic systems should contain the quantatitive information that allows the reader to repeat the work, e.g.: \(MPLC on silica gel (2\x50cm), MeOH/ EtOAc 8:2, 3ml/min; tR of 1: 60-70ml, 2: 120-140ml, 3: 145-175ml; detection of eluates by TLC (SiO2, MeOH/H2O 9:1; Dragendorff reagent), Rf 1: 0.35, 2: 0.55, 3: 0.73\). When using gradients the volumes of solvents should be presented; fractions should be defin ed by their elution volume. Similar information is necessary for HPLC, GLC, DCCC, MLCC and all other methods of purification.

GC identifications of constituents of essential oils must be supported by retention indices on a polar and an apolar column.

General Information

Pharmacological Investigations
PLANTA MEDICA will only consider manuscripts in which conclusions are based on adequate statistics which account for the type of data distribution, on the number of experimental observations required for the applica tion of the respective statistical method, and which incorporate the appropriate tests of significance. In each case positive controls (reference compounds) should be used and the dose/dependence should be shown. When working with experimental animals, reference should be made to principles of laboratory animal care or similar regulations.

Pharmacological investigations of extracts require detailed extract characterisation. This includes botanical characterisation of plant material, solvent(s), duration and temperature of extraction, plus other method(s) used for preparation(s). The drug to extract ratio (DER) must be given. A chromatographic (e.g. HPLC profile recorded at different wavelengths) or chemical characterisation (quantities of typical constituents) has to be presented; altogether the phytochemical standardisation of an extract and/or fraction(s) require state of the art methods. The investigation must clearly indicate a dose/activity dependence in comparison to a reference compound (positive control) together with the appropriate statistics.

Clinical Studies
Studies reporting on plant preparation tested in humans will be accepted for review and publication. Clinical studies must be designed, implemented and analyzed in a manner to meet current standards of randomized controlled trials. For guidelines see the following reviews: Begg C et al. JAMA 1996; 276: 637-9 and Altmann DG: BMJ 1996; 313: 570-1. All methods and variables used in a trial should be describ ed; the data must be based on adequate statistics. Herbal medicinal products used must be characterized as described above under \(pharmacological investigations with extracts\).

Electronic Manuscripts
Authors should not send manuscripts on diskette with the first submission. However, the final version of the manuscript should be made avail able on a diskette on request by the Editor after the manuscript has been accepted for publica tion. Commonly used text processors should be used and the operating system, programme and version numbers should be indicated on the diskette. Please save your file in the standard format of your text processor and in one or several exchange formats (for example, *.txt, *.rtf). If possible, the \(endnote\) function of the text processor should be used for the management of references. Figure legends and tables should be listed at the end of the document.

Please save figures, tables and structural formulas as separate files. They should not be integrat ed into the text document. The following graphic file formats are preferred: For coloured and black-and-white bit-maps: *.eps, *.tif, *.jpg, *.wmf (resolution: 300 dpi). For diagrams and line drawings: *.eps (resolution: 800 dpi).

In addition to the electronic files, two paper versions of both text and figures must be submitt ed. In case of doubt, the paper version is given the higher priority. Please provide a signed declaration that the paper and electronical ver sions are identical.

Proofs and Reprints
Galley proofs will be sent to the author responsible for correspondence (indicated after the references). 25 reprints of each article will be supplied free of charge. These will be shipp ed after publication of the journal issue. An order form for further reprints (in increments of 50) will be sent with the galley proofs and should be signed and returned with the corrected proofs even if additional reprints are not requested.
