About the journal

 Plant and Soil

Plant and Soil publishes original papers and solicited review articles dealing with the interface of plant biology and soil sciences, which are of general interest. This area includes fundamental and applied aspects of mineral nutrition, plant-water relations, symbiotic and pathogenic plant-microbe interactions, root anatomy and morphology, soil biology, ecology, agrochemistry and agrophysics. Articles including a major molecular or mathematical component also fall within the scope of the journal. All contributions appear in the English language.

Plant and Soil is indexed/abstracted in Biological Abstracts; BIOSIS Previews; Biological & Agricultural Index; CAB Abstracts; Chemical Abstracts; Current Advances in Plant Science; Current Contents/Agriculture, Biology & Environmental Sciences; Ecology Abstracts; Elsevier BIOBASE/Current Awareness in Biological Sciences; Environmental Abstracts/Enviroline; Geobase/Geo Abstracts; Geographical Abstracts: Human Geography Health and Safety Science; The ISI Alerting Services; Microbiology Abstracts B; PASCAL Database; Reference Update; Science Citation Index; Science Citation Index Expanded; Water Resources Abstracts

Instructions to Authors

Online Manuscript Submission

Plant and Soil is now using a fully web-enabled on-line manuscript submission and review system, which offers authors the option to track the progress of the review process of manuscripts in real time. To keep the review time as short as possible (no postal delays!), authors are requested to submit their manuscripts online at: http://plso.edmgr.com

The online manuscript submission and review system for Plant and Soil offers easy and straightforward login and submission procedures. This system supports a wide range of submission file formats: for manuscripts - Word, WordPerfect, RTF, TXT and LaTex; for figures - TIFF, GIF, JPEG, EPS, PPT, and Postscript.

NOTE: All manuscripts should be submitted using the journals onlinemanuscript submission system. By using the on-line manuscript submission and review system, it is NOT necessary to submit the manuscript also in printout + disk. In case you encounter any difficulties while submitting your manuscript on line, please get in touch with the responsible Editorial Assistant by clicking on "CONTACT US" from the tool bar.

No page charges are levied.

Time of Publication

The Editor-in-Chief assigns manuscripts to a Section Editor who makes the final editorial decision based on the advice of at least two independent reviewers. Manuscripts will be reviewed within 2 months of submission and published within 4 months of final acceptance. When papers are accepted subject to revision, usually only a single revised version will be considered, and the revised manuscript must be submitted within 8 weeks of the acceptance in principle.

Manuscript Presentation

The journal’s language is English. British English or American English spelling and terminology may be used, but either one should be followed consistently throughout the article. The manuscripts should be provided with a preceding page, mentioning the numbers of text pages, tables and figures, a short running title and name, address (including name of country), telephone and FAX numbers, and E-mail address of the corresponding author. The manuscripts should be typed in double space and all margins be kept wide. There should be line-numbering in all manuscripts. The manuscript should be divided into sections, viz. Key words, Abstract, Abbreviations, Introduction, Materials and methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References. The Abstract must contain the aim of the research and a brief conclusion, as well as the main findings of the research project. Key words (maximum 6) should be given in alphabetical order and separated by commas. The title should provide a concise statement of the contents. In dividing and subdividing the manuscript, lower case headings should be used. The sections should not be numbered. References to notes in the text should be superior numbers.

Illustrations and Tables

Figures, photographs and tables should be added separately, i.e. not inserted in the typed text. Captions to figures and photographs should be collected into one or more separate pages. Captions to tables should be given at the beginning of a table. Line drawings should be in a form suitable for reproduction without modification. Extremely small type should be avoided as figures are often reduced in size. Legends and text in figures should be inserted. Table notes should be referred to by superscript letters. Photographs should be supplied as black-and-white high, contrast glossy prints. Colour plates may be inserted at the author’s expense. Positions of tables, figures and photographs should be indicated in the left margin.

Abbreviations and Units

Only SI units and abbreviations should be used. Abbreviations should be explained when they first appear in the text. If a non-standard abbreviation is to be used extensively, it should be defined in full on page 2 as mentioned above. For mineral contents the elements (P, N, K, etc.) should be used. Isotopes should be indicated as 14C, 32P, etc. Ions should be mentioned as H+, Mg2+, etc. For molar concentration italic M (underlined) should be used. Latin biological names should be italicized (underlined).

Acknowledgements

These should follow the Discussion. If references to grant support are cited, write out complete names of the funding agencies.

References

References to literature should be arranged alphabetically.
References to literature in the text should be made in alphabetical order by mentioning author and year; in the case of two authors, both should be mentioned, but with three or more only the name of the first author plus et al. should be given. Do not use in list or text: unpublished results or in preparation. An in press reference to Plant and Soil should state the file number. Reference to personal communications should only be mentioned in the text. Please follow the style shown below:
