Instructions to Authors

Placenta invites submission of full length papers and short communications of high quality. Book reviews, letters to the editor are also published. Single case reports are acceptable only if they illustrate a point of general interest. Full length reviews, and mini-reviews (Current Topics) are usually solicited by editor's invitation but may also be submitted. Short Communications must consist of not more than 6 typed pages and no more than 2 figures. The publication of short communications can be expedited upon request but will not be accepted for expedition if major revisions are required.

Placenta covers all aspects of the human and animal placenta including development, structure, physiology, metabolism, endocrinology, microbiology, pathology, immunology, pharmacology, cell biology, biochemistry, and molecular mechanisms underlying placental function. Studies of implantation, comparative placentation, placental modeling, trophoblastic neoplasia, clinical aspects of altered placental structure or function and the study of the vascular supply and its regulation are also presented. We welcome studies on the fetus and fetoplacental interactions. All submissions are sent to expert referees for comments as to acceptability for publication.

A manuscript will be accepted only on the understanding that it is an original contribution which has not been published previously.

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically at http://plac.editorialmanager.com/ (see instructions below)

Papers from Africa and Europe are handled by Professor Gernot Desoye, Graz, Austria and papers from the Americas, Asia and Australasia are handled by Professor Leslie Myatt, Cincinnati, USA.

Digital Object Identifier

W. B. Saunders assigns a unique digital object identifier (DOI) to every article it publishes. The DOI appears on the title page of the article. It is assigned after the article has been accepted for publication and persists throughout the lifetime of the article. Due to its persistence, it can be used to query W.B. Saunders for information on the article during the production process, to find the article on the Internet through various Web sites, including IDEAL, and to cite the article in academic references. When using a W. B. Saunders article in a reference section, it is important to include the article?s DOI in the reference as volume and page information is not always available for articles published online. The references section shows samples of DOI included in references. Further information may be found at http://www.academicpress.com/doi

Manuscript Submission

Manuscripts can be submitted preferably as an internet file or alternatively as a paper/diskette version. Internet submission is encouraged to reduce the manuscript processing time, and will thereby shorten the average time that authors must wait for a decision. Microsoft Word or WordPerfect are recommended for creating document files. For most figures, Tag Image Format Files (TIF) files are preferred. Note that Microsoft PowerPoint files can be converted into TIF files by choosing "Tag Image Format File" as the document type when "saving as."

Internet Submission

Authors who can supply each of the following separate electronic files are encouraged to submit their manuscripts via the internet (http://plac.editorialmanager.com/):

Manuscript (Title Page and Abstract, Text, References and Figure Legends and Tables; all separate files )

Figures (Each figure should be a separate file labeled Figure 1, Figure 2, etc. and images should be at least 200 dpi)

Follow the instructions on the manuscript submission site for creation of the pdf file. Please also include the mandatory checklist and submit the names of three potential reviewers with email addresses.

Authors who cannot submit these files electronically should submit a printed manuscript with diskette. The editorial office will upload the manuscript, tables, and figures for the authors by proxy (see below).

Paper/Diskette Submission

Authors who are unable to submit their manuscript via the internet should submit a cover letter, three printed copies of the manuscript (Title page, Abstract, Text, References, and Tables), and either:

  • A diskette containing separate files for the cover letter, manuscript (Title page, Abstract, Text, References, and Tables), and figures, or
  • A diskette containing separate files for the cover letter and manuscript (Title page, Abstract, Text, References, and Tables), along with three hard copies of the figures that the Editorial Office can scan to the appropriate editor.

Manuscript Tracking

Each submission is assigned a unique number and authors are notified of receipt. Placenta releases information about manuscripts only to authors. The corresponding author can obtain information on the status of a manuscript via Editorial Manager using his/her username and password. The editorial office will submit all manuscripts received via mail to Editorial Manager, and the editorial office will send a username and password to the author.

Manuscript Style

Manuscripts should be submitted in English as double spaced typescript with generous margins, complete in all respects, including a title and a suggested running head. The name and address of the author should appear in the exact form required for publication. Papers should be structured conventionally: summary (=<200 words), introduction, materials and methods, results and discussion. Brevity without loss of precision will enhance all sections, particularly materials and methods. We will render spelling consistent with that presented in the Oxford English Dictionary. Footnotes should be avoided and acknowledgements, or grant sources, given at the end of the text.

Reference Format

References in the text must correlate with the reference list and should be cited by name and date, not numbers, thus: Smith (1963); Smith and Jones (1965); Smith, Jones and Brown (1967). Where a reference has four or more authors it should be cited in the text thus: Smith et al (1972). If there are two references for Smith and Jones (1965) these should be designated a and b. The same will apply to Smith et al (1972), even if the co-authors in these references are different.

The reference list at the end of the paper should include the names of all the authors. References are listed alphabetically. Where several papers by the same author are cited these should be arranged in single-author, double-author, treble-author, and multi-author groups (in that order), the references being arranged chronologically within each group, the earliest first. Groups of references within the text should be arranged in chronological order.

In some instances, extra information such as edition and chapter number may be helpful to the reader. References which have not been published are acceptable only if 'in press'. References in languages other than English will be printed as submitted. Responsibility for the accuracy of references rests solely with the authors.

Figures

Figures For electronic submission follow manuscript submission instructions. Supported formats include TIFF, GIF, JPEG, PICT and PDF, use at least 200 dpi resolution. If submitting offline, three high quality photographic prints of each illustration should be submitted, one of which must be fully labelled; if the other two prints are unlabelled, they should be accompanied by photocopies of the labelled prints. Do not send negatives or photocopies on their own. Mounting is undesirable. Please indicate lightly in pencil, on the reverse side, permissible lines of cropping, your name, the figure number, optimal size, and the 'top' of the illustration. Labeling should be consistent with the text and must be large enough to be legible when reduced to page size. Please provide a magnification bar with all micrographs. Very simple line formulae can be set by the printer; complex formulae or biochemical pathways should be submitted as artwork and will be printed as they are presented to us. (The type area is 130 x 200mm. Please remember to allow sufficient space for the illustration legend in calculating the size of your illustration original.)

Illustrations should be given adequate legends, typed up as a list separate from the text. The illustrations should also be cited in the text.

Tables

Tables should be numbered in Arabic numbers, given adequate titles or headings, separately attached to the manuscript, and should be cited in the text.

Units & Abbreviations

The Royal Society of Medicine has published Units, Symbols and Abbreviations\MA Guide for Biological and Medical Editors and Authors 4th ed. (Ed.) Baran, D. N. You are requested to follow these, or similar, recommendations (e.g. IUPACIUB Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature), to use metric units and, wherever possible, to adopt the International System of Units (SI). Where SI units have not been universally accepted it is advisable to give values in traditional units in brackets. If abbreviations are used, the terms should be written out in full when first used, the abbreviation then being given in parentheses. Where abbreviations are adopted, capitals are preferred, for example ECG, BMR (not ecg, bmr) without full stops.

Copyright Information

Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright of the paper shall be assigned to the Publisher. In consideration for the assignment of copyright, the Publisher will supply 50 offprints of each paper. The Publisher will not put any limitation on the personal freedom of the author to use material contained in the paper in any other works which may be published.

Permissions Information

If illustrations are borrowed from published sources, written permission must be obtained from both publisher and author, and a credit line giving the source added to the legend. If text material totaling 250 to 300 words, or any tables, are borrowed verbatim from published sources, written permission is required from both publisher and author. With shorter quotations, it is sufficient to add a bibliographic credit. Permission letters for reproduced text or illustration must accompany the manuscript. If you have been unable to obtain permission, please point this out.

Proofs

Page proofs will be submitted to the first named or a nominated author. Major alterations will be charged to the author.

We will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive email or fax. Subsequent additional corrections will not be possible, so please ensure that your first communication is complete.

Offprints

A total of 25 free offprints of each paper will be made available to its author(s). Additional copies can be ordered at proof stage when a scale of costs will be supplied.
