1.0 General Policy

Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics (PCCP) is an international journal for the publication of original research papers, Invited Articles, Review Articles, Communications and Comments in the areas of physical chemistry, biophysical chemistry and chemical physics. The journal is published bimonthly. There is no page charge for articles published in PCCP.

1.1 Research Papers

Full papers contain original scientific work that has not been published previously. However, extension of work that has appeared in print in a short form such as a PCCP Communication or Chemical Communication is normally acceptable. There are no restrictions on the length of a paper.

The PCCP contents list is sectionalised using the following section headings:

1Properties of Molecules

2Kinetics and Reaction Dynamics

3Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics

4Macromolecules and Soft Matter

5Nanosciences

6Interfaces, Electrochemistry

7Biophysical Chemistry

8Solids and Materials Science

9Catalysis

Authors should indicate at the time of submission which section is the most appropriate for their paper.

1.2 Invited Articles

Invited Articles are commissioned by the PCCP Editorial Board. Suggestions from readers for topics and authors of Invited Articles should be addressed to the Managing Editor, E-mail: pccp@rsc.org. Invited Articles are intended to be high profile articles of interest to a broad spectrum of research workers within the areas of physical chemistry, chemical physics and biophysical chemistry. Whilst recognizing the wide readership of PCCP, authors should aspire to present an authoritative state-of-the-art account of the selected research field. Notes on the preparation of Invited Articles are available from the Managing Editor.

1.3 Review Articles

Review Articles are critical assessments of research in areas of current interest in physical chemistry, chemical physics and biophysical chemistry. Reviews should provide an in depth account of the selected topic but remain accessible to the general PCCP reader by providing a thorough introduction to the subject. The present level of understanding in the field should be discussed, along with the implications of recent developments and authors should aim to stimulate progress in the area. Reviews should conclude with a section on possible future prospects. Review Articles should consist of 5,000 to 10,000 words of text together with supporting figures and tables.

1.4 Communications

Communications contain either a complete study or a preliminary report but in either case must contain original and highly significant work whose interest to the PCCP readership and high novelty warrants rapid publication. Authors should supply with their submission a justification of why the work merits urgent publication as a Communication. Referees will be asked to judge the work on these grounds. Communications are given high visibility within the journal; they are published at the front of an issue in a separate section from the full paper subject categories and are the only article type to have graphical abstracts. Communications will not normally exceed the length of four printed journal pages, however, exceptions may be made at the Editor's discretion. Full papers based on Communications will be acceptable provided that they represent a substantial extension of the original material.

1.5 Comments

Comments are a medium for the discussion and exchange of scientific opinions, normally concerning material published in PCCP. Comments will normally be forwarded to the authors of the work being discussed, and these authors will be given the opportunity to submit a Reply for publication together with the Comment. For publication of a Comment or a Reply, they must be judged by the referees to present new insights and be of interest to the PCCP readership. Comments and Replies will be reviewed in the normal way, but additional referees will be consulted if there is an unresolved disagreement between correspondents, or where there is doubt as to the significance of the Comment or Reply. Comments will not normally exceed a length of one printed journal page. Publication will take place only when all parties have had an opportunity to respond appropriately.

1.6 Submission of Articles

Articles should be submitted using the RSC file-upload service: www.rsc.org/submissions

Before submission authors are encouraged to check the RSC Reviews web site to ensure that they have cited relevant recent reviews: www.rsc.org/reviews

On submitting their manuscripts, authors are encouraged to supply the names and addresses of 2? potential referees. Owing to the non-availability of many referees and editorial staff in July–August each year, authors are advised to limit their submissions during this period in order to minimize delays.

Rapid publication is aided by careful preparation of text and illustrations. Particular attention is drawn to the use of (i) SI units and associated conventions, (ii) IUPAC nomenclature for compounds and (iii) standard methods of literature citation.

Ideally, articles should be submitted as a single MS Word file or PDF with figures embedded. This file will be used for online refereeing where possible and allows manuscripts to be handled more accurately and efficiently by the Editorial Office.

The RSC e-submission service allows any number of files to be uploaded. All files relating to a single manuscript should be uploaded simultaneously during one transaction. Files uploaded separately will result in more than one manuscript number being assigned and may subsequently be lost. The following information should be provided:

(a) The manuscript as a single MS Word file or PDF with figures embedded

(b) Crystallographic data in CIF format, if applicable

(c) Data for deposition with the ESI service, if applicable

(d) The most appropriate section heading of the PCCP contents list

(e) Details of any relevant preliminary Communications (please give reference or include PDF file)

(f) Names of potential referees

(g) Copies of any in press or submitted to references

(h) For Communications, a justification of why the work merits urgent publication

(i) For Communications, a graphical contents entry should be provided on submission of the manuscript. This should include: Graphic: maximum size 8cm x 4 cm. Text: one sentence no longer than 20 words, highlighting the novel aspects of the work. The text provided may be rewritten to maintain the journal style

(j) For Comments, details of the original PCCP paper being commented upon

All authors submitting work for publication are required to agree a Licence to Publish. Authors will be asked to agree a Licence to Publish online. Alternatively the form at www.rsc.org/pdf/pccp/pccp_copy.pdf should be forwarded to the Editorial Office.

After submission your file will be acknowledged by the Editorial Office as soon possible. Authors should contact the Editorial Office if they have not received an acknowledgement within 4 working days. Authors should not forward more than one version of their manuscript or submit the manuscript by post or e-mail to avoid errors in manuscript handling by the Editorial Office.

1.7 Requirements for Revised Articles and Material for Proof Preparation

Revised manuscripts should be sent to the Editorial Office by file-upload: www.rsc.org/submissions.

Please note that when an article is accepted for publication, a Microsoft Word or LaTex (or similar native format) version of the manuscript will be required for proof preparation. For other word processors, save the file as Rich Text Format (.rtf) if possible. Please supply the text file as unjustified, ranged left, and without end-of-line hyphenation. Auto-referencing features that bury references within the text should not be used. Please include any tables at the end of the text file, and use either the word processor's table editor or tabs for formatting (but not a mixture of the two).

Separate copies of the artwork in TIFF, EPS or PDF formats with greater than 600dpi resolution are required. It would be helpful if PDF graphics were produced using the "PDF Creation Files" job options from our website: www.rsc.org/is/journals/templates/templates.htm.

Chemical structure diagrams may be submitted as CS ChemDraw (saved as filename.cdx), ChemWindows (saved as filename.chm) or ISIS/Draw files (exported as filename.tgf).

Unfortunately PDF files containing text and encapsulated figures are not suitable for proof preparation.

Please check the manuscript carefully for consistency, particularly in the representation of chemical formulae, compound names and words with alternative spellings.

Successful use of your electronic files should speed up the production process and avoid errors being introduced. Authors should ensure that files submitted at this stage contain the final version of their manuscript. Proof corrections should only correct errors from the Production process and should not be used to make general changes to the text.

We will try to use the supplied data in our production process, but mathematical equations and tables in particular may be re-keyed by the typesetter. It is imperative that authors check their proofs (including any tabulated data and figures) very carefully. Papers are published as advance Articles on the web as soon as possible after the return of proof corrections. Late corrections cannot be incorporated after publication of the Advance Article.

2.0 Administration

Receipt of a paper will be acknowledged, and the paper will be given a reference number which authors are asked to quote on all their subsequent correspondence. If no acknowledgement is received after a reasonable period of time authors should check with the Editorial Office ( E-mail: pccp@rsc.org) as to whether the paper or the acknowledgement has gone astray.

Editorial Policy. Every paper deemed suitable for consideration as a submission will be assessed by at least two referees, by whose advice the Editor will be guided as to its acceptability. Authors may submit with their manuscript the names of suitable potential referees. Papers that are accepted must not be published elsewhere except by permission of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Submission of a manuscript will be regarded as an undertaking that the same material is not being considered for publication by another journal. Conditions governing acceptance are available from the Editorial Office.

Licence to Publish. The whole of the literary matter (including tables, figures, diagrams and photographs) in PCCP and any Supplementary Material is subject to a Licence to Publish. The paper may not be reproduced without permission from The Royal Society of Chemistry or the copyright owner of the paper as may be indicated.

3.0 Notes on the Preparation of Papers

3.1 Organisation of Material

Various templates for manuscript preparation are available at http://www.rsc.org/is/journals/templates/templates.htm together with instructions for their use. The format of these templates resembles the journal layout and are designed to give authors a clearer idea of the length and layout of their final paper. This may be of particular use for authors of Communications and Comments which have specific page restrictions.

Use of the templates is optional and not a requirement for submitting work to PCCP. For authors not wishing to use a template the following guidelines should be used.

1Manuscripts must be typed in double-line spacing, with margins at top, bottom and left-hand side of at least 4 cm. Pages should be numbered sequentially.

2The first page should be set out as follows:

(i) Name and address of the author(s) to whom proofs and correspondence should be sent.

(ii) Title of the paper.

(iii) Authors names, including one forename for each author.

(iv) The address where the work was carried out; if this is different from the current address of an author a footnote indicating the present address of this author should be included.

(v) Abstract, preceded and followed by a horizontal line, and typed in double-line spacing.

3Suitable headings and sub-headings should be used in the main text as appropriate (except for Communications and Comments, in which no headings are used).

4Bibliographic references and footnotes should follow the main text and should have the following format:

1R. M. Barrer and R. J. B. Craven, Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2000, 2, 545?52.

2R. M. Barrer and R. J. B. Craven, in New Developments in Zeolite Science and Technology, ed. Y. Murakame, A. Iijima and J. W. Ward, Kodansha, Tokyo, 1986, p. 521?03.

Please note that although page ranges are preferred, references which specify the first page only of an article are acceptable.

Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index (CASSI). See www.rsc.org/is/journals/authrefs/jabbr.htm

Authors are encouraged to check the RSC the RSC Reviews web site to ensure that they have cited relevant reviews: www.rsc.org/reviews

5Tables should be typed on separate sheets at the end of the manuscript.

6Diagrams should be accompanied by a separately typed set of captions. Extensive identifying lettering should be placed in the caption rather than on lines on graphs, etc. Artwork should be presized for single or double column format. Colour photographs will be accepted only when a black-and-white photograph fails to show some vital feature.

3.2 Units and Symbols

The recommendations of IUPAC should be followed. Their basis is the Système Internationale dUnités (SI). A detailed treatment is given in the so-called Green Book. Quantities, Units and Symbols in Physical Chemistry, Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, 1988 edn.

3.3 Nomenclature

Current IUPAC nomenclature and symbolism should be used.

Attention is drawn to the following publications in which the rules themselves and guidance on their use are given:

Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry, Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, 1993.

Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry, Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, 1990.

Biochemical Nomenclature and Related Documents, Portland Press, London, 1992.

Compendium of Chemical Terminology: IUPAC Recommendations, Blackwell Scientific Publications, Oxford, 1987.

4.0 Electronic Supplementary Information (ESI) Service

Authors are encouraged to make use of the RSC's Electronic Supplementary Information service to enhance and increase the impact of their articles. ESI data can take full advantage of the electronic medium, allowing use of full colour diagrams, 3D molecular models and even movies. Authors can also improve the readability of their articles by placing appropriate material, such as repetitive experimental details, primary kinetic data, spectra, diagrams and bulky data, with the ESI service. In particular, publication of lengthy tables or raw data is discouraged and such material should be deposited. Deposited data will be made freely available via the Journal Web-pages. The electronic data should be supplied in one of the formats below (other formats may also be acceptable).

5.0 Publication of X-Ray Crystallographic Work

Authors should submit all supplementary crystallographic data electronically as a Crystallographic Information File (CIF) file, which should include: a table of final fractional atomic cooordinates; any calculated cooordinates (e.g. hydrogen); a full list of bond lengths and angles with estimated standard deviations; a full list of displacement parameters in the form Bij or Uij (in ?small>2 or pm2); FULL details of the refinement.

Authors wishing to submit X-ray crystallographic work are strongly encouraged to consult the full guidelines before submitting such work (available from www.rsc.org/is/journals/authrefs/cryst.htm)

Deposition of Material at the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre ?Supplementary crystallographic data will be passed to the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC) as part of the assessment process. Each structure will be assigned a separate CCDC number, which will be detailed in the subsequent crystallographic report. Data will be held in their confidential archive until publication of the article, when they will be entered into the Cambridge Structural Database (if an organic carbon is present) while purely inorganic data will be forwarded to the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe. Enquiries for data can be directed to CCDC, 12 Union Road, Cambridge, UK CB2 1EZ, E-mail: deposit@ccdc.cam.ac.uk, Fax +44 (0) 1223 336033

If the article is not published by the RSC, these data will remain in the CCDC's confidential archive. If the crystal structure(s) are then published elsewhere, the CCDC Deposition Number(s) detailed in the crystallographic report should be quoted in that publication and the CCDC advised of the new journal and the appropriate reference.
