STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Founded in 1986, Palaios is a bimonthly journal dedicated to emphasizing the impact of life on Earth¡¯s history as recorded in the paleontological and sedimentological records. Palaios disseminates information to an international spectrum of geologists interested in a broad range of topics, including, but not limited to: biogeochemistry, ichnology, paleoclimatology, paleoecology, paleoceanography, sedimentology, and stratigraphy.

Palaios publishes papers that elucidate the applications of paleontology to solving diverse geologic problems. Palaios therefore welcomes contributions that emphasize using paleontology to answer any number of important geologic and biologic questions that further our understanding of Earth history. Accordingly, manuscripts whose subject matter and conclusions have broad geologic implications, rather than narrowly focused discourses, will be selected for publication. Moreover, Palaios welcomes original contributions to research and discourages papers that already have had substantial parts of their conclusions or data published elsewhere. Given that the purpose of Palaios is to generate enthusiasm for paleontology among a broad spectrum of readers, the editor requests: titles that interest; abstracts that emphasize conclusions; illustrations of professional caliber used in place of words; and lively, yet scholarly, text.

MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES

Palaios has a varied format in each issue that accommodates several types of manuscripts. The following are the formats that are used in Palaios:

1) ONLINE: usually 1-2 published pages (5-10 ms pages), invited editorial contribution;

2) Research Reports: usually 10-15 published pages (30-45 ms pages), comprehensive research papers;

3) Research Letters: usually 2-5 published pages (10-20 ms pages) or less, preliminary reports of significant discoveries, brief research notes on new methods and/or instrumentation, or short reports on topics of interest to the Palaios readership;

4) Book Reviews: usually 1-2 published pages (5-10 ms pages), in-depth reviews of selected books and;

5) Comments and Replies: readers' responses to papers in previous issues, author¡¯s replies to comments.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION PROCEDURE

Please follow ALL of the instructions to authors below. Manuscripts in improper format may be sent back to authors for reformatting prior to review.

When properly formatted, send THREE unbound copies of a prospective manuscript to the editor, each with a complete set of illustrations. One set of illustrations should be suitable for printing, and two clear xerographic copies should be suitable for reviewers. Photo reproductions must be clear.

All submissions should be sent to:

A SEPARATE TITLE PAGE IS REQUIRED for Research Reports and Research Letters (see format below).

EXCEPT title page, NUMBER ALL PAGES in the TOP right-hand corner.

The manuscript should be ordered as follows (as necessary, see below): Title page, Abstract page (with keywords), Text, References, Table and Figure Captions, Tables, and Figures.

 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR RESEARCH REPORTS AND RESEARCH LETTERS

Please submit Research Reports and Research Letters with the following IN ORDER:

1) SEPARATE Title Page: Should include IN THE FOLLOWING ORDER, ALL CENTERED:

Figures and Figure captions in which more than one illustration is used should be labeled with CAPITAL letters (e.g., Fig. 3A, B, C, etc.). This applies to both the Figure and Figure caption.

Each Figure must be referred to in the text, spelled out in full or, where parenthetical, abbreviated. For example, "The trends illustrated in Figure 6 are manifested in bivariate plots (Fig. 7A, B), time-series (Figs. 8¨C10), and surface trends (Figs. 11A, 12)."

Authors will receive page proofs directly from Allen Press. Therefore, all authors must provide a street address for page proofs to be delivered to. Authors are expected to read proofs very carefully. Authors also will receive Transfer of Copyright forms with page proofs. All page proofs and signed Transfer of Copyright are to be returned as soon as possible to the Editorial Office (Authors of ONLINEs, Book Reviews, and "Comment and Reply" will not receive proofs; these contributions may be modified at the discretion of the Editorial Office).

REPRINTS

Reprints can be ordered on a form supplied with the page proofs. SEPM members receive a discount on reprints from Allen Press if they request the discount on the original order form. The Editorial Office does not handle reprint orders.
