About the journal
NORDIC PULP & PAPER RESEARCH JOURNAL
Original manuscripts containing new significant results in the fields of science and technology for wood constituents, pulp and paper and not scheduled for publication elsewhere will be considered for publication. Reviews and manuscripts based on preprints from conferences may also be accepted. The copyright of the published article belongs to the author(s). All manuscripts will be peer reviewed.
Instructions to Authors
Manuscript preparation The manuscript should preferably be submitted by e-mail (rainer.s@mentoronline.se) or by other electronic media. Figures and equations should be supplied on separate pages in high resolution PDF. Manuscripts on paper will also be accepted. NPPRJ is published in black and white. "How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper" by Robert A. Day is an excellent guide when preparing a manuscript.
English Language The manuscripts must be written in good English, linguistically revised. Either American or British spelling may be used, but consistency is desired. Report your own work in past tense, for others' work use present tense (as discussed in the book of Day).
Keywords 4-8 keywords should be given. They may be selected from "Thesaurus of Pulp and Paper Terminology" edited by Institute of Paper Science and Technology, Atlanta, GA, USA.
Summary The Summary at the beginning of the paper should be informative, not merely indicative. It should state briefly the purpose of the work, the significant results and conclusions. The normal length is about half a typewritten page. Abbreviations and acronyms should be avoided.
Address(es) of the author(s) Addresses (including e-mail) is given at the time of the publication for each author in a special note after the Summary.
The IMRAD format We urge the authors to follow the IMRAD principle whenever this is possible
Introduction Scope of the problem investigated, Review of pertinent literature, Method of investigation, State the aim of the work.
Materials and Methods Give full details of all the experiments, so that they can be repeated. Results should not be reported here
Results Representative data shall be presented. Methods shall not be described here.
Discussion Discuss principles and relationships, point out exceptions. Show agreement with published research work. The significance of the work or conclusions should be presented in the end of the discussion or in a separate section.
Appendix Special information, which impedes the flow of the paper can be given as an Appendix
Illustrations The lines of the figures, on separate sheets, must be sufficiently heavy to be readily legible and the letters and symbols sufficiently large. 3D figures must be avoided. The minimum resolution of pictures must be 300 dpi (10 cm width). Grayscale or colour pictures should not be used. Note that the width of a column is 82 mm. Units should be given on the axes. Magnification of photomicrographs must be indicated e.g. with a scale line.
Mathematics The SI system (metric system) shall be used throughout. Great caution must be given to the correct positioning in equations of subscripts, super-scripts and mathematical signs. All mathematical symbols must be explained. All equations should be presented in their own line and should also be numbered. Long equations should be divided in order to fit into a column. The size of exponents and indices in equations shall be 50% of the main letter. Use only Arabic numerals.
Name-year system for literature citations Relevant literature references shall be given according to the name-year-system (Harvard-system). In the running text, the name(s) or the author(s) and the year of publication are written within parentheses. If there are three or more authors, the first name followed by “et al.?is given. Example: (Mao, Hartler 1992; Sandås et al. 1989). If the name(s) of the author(s) are given in a sentence just repeat the year of publication within parenthesis. References shall not include unpublished works.
At the end of the article under heading “Literature? all references are listed in alphabetic order according to the first author. Use CAS abbreviations for the names of the cited journals.
Literature (Examples):
- Mao, B. and Hartler, N. (1992): Improved modified kraft cooking, Nordic Pulp Paper Res. J. 7(4), 168.
- Sandås, S.E., Salminen, P.J. and Eklund, D.E. (1989): Measuring the water retention of coating colors, Tappi J. 72(12), 207.
- Smith, J.F. (1934): US pat. 3.428.000.
- Stewart, R. (1965): In "Oxidation in Organic Chemistry", part A. Edited K. Wiberg.
- Academic Press, New York, pp. 2-68.
