About the journal

Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology

Journal of the British Neuropathological Society

Neuropathology and Applied Neurobiology is an international journal sponsored by the British Neuropathological Society for the publication of original papers, both clinical and experimental, on problems and pathological process in neuropathology and muscle disease. Multidisciplinary papers are especially welcomed, particularly those with a neurobiological emphasis. It welcomes contributions therefore on all relevant aspects of neural and muscular tissues in health and in disease, regardless of methodology. Brief case reports are encouraged provided they are of primary pathological interest. Annotations and reviews are also encouraged and sometimes invited. Constructive and interesting correspondence is welcomed. Copyright for articles resides with the publishers, from whom permission for reproduction etc. should be sought.

Information to be published in the Diary Section should be sent to the Editor-in-Chief.

Manuscripts are accepted on the understanding that they have not been and will not be published elsewhere other than in abstract form.

There should be a letter of submission that contains a statement that all authors have seen and approved the manuscript. When necessary, the authors should state that they have obtained appropriate ethical approval for studies and that animal work conforms to appropriate local standards, specifying what these are. Any conflict of interest of any of the authors in respect of the manuscript contents should be disclosed. After a brief editorial review to assess suitability, each manuscript is reviewed by at least two referees. In the letter of submission authors may suggest the names (include street and e-mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers) of two potential referees. Authors may also request that certain persons not be used as referees and this will be taken into account when assigning a referee.

Two copies of the manuscript and illustrations should be sent to aid refereeing and these should be typed double-spaced, on one side of standard (A4) paper. A title page should have the names of all contributing authors, their places of work, the name and e-mail address of the author for correspondence purposes, up to eight keywords (according to Index Medicus, Medical Subject Heading - if possible) for indexing, and a short running title.

'Original articles' should be concisely written. The paper should begin with a full abstract of about 250 words then proceed to Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Discussion sections.

'Brief reports' and 'Case reports' should be concisely written and formatted as an extended letter. They should be no longer than 1500 words and may have one page of illustrations if required. Both medical and veterinary reports are welcome.

'Annotations' should be on a topic of current interest, and no longer than 2000 words with 30 to 40 references. They should be interestingly written with a full abstract and aim to instruct and stimulate rather than to gain total coverage of the subject.

'Reviews' should be on a topic of current interest, and no longer than 6000 words. They should be interestingly written with a full abstract and aim to provide a comprehensive summary of the subject.

The structure of the abstract is important as it will ensure maximum exposure on electronic indexing systems such as MEDLINE or EMBASE. Please ensure that the abstract gives a comprehensive account of the contents without reference to the text. Ensure that there are details of background, hypothesis, study details, main results and conclusions.

References

The reference list should be in numbered alphabetical order, and should be set out as in the following examples.

1 Love S, Barber R, Wilcock GK. Neuronal death in brain infarcts in man. Neuropathol Appl Neurobiol 2000; 26: 55-66
2 Graham DI, Gennarelli TA. Trauma. In Greenfield's Neuropathology Eds. DI Graham, PL Lantos, 6th edn. London: Arnold. 1996: 197-262

References should use a modified Vancouver system. Each reference is referred to in the text by the relevant number from the reference list (ie. [2]). Every contributing author name should be included. Authors are responsible for the accuracy of their references. Manuscripts of papers quoted as 'in press' should accompany the submitted paper.

Abbrevations in the text should be avoided: if used, they should be written out in full when first used. Details that might disclose the identity of any patients should be omitted.

Units of measurements, symbols and abbreviations, where used, should be in conformity with the guidelines laid down in Baron D.N. (1988) Units, Symbols and Abbreviations, 4th edn. published and supplied by the Royal Society of Medicine, 1 Wimpole Street, London, W1M 8AE.

Tables should be supplied on separate sheets, but their approximate positions should be indicated in the text.

Illustrations should be labelled with the figure number and author's name in soft pencil on the back and the top edge identified. Two sets of illustrations should be submitted for review. Photographs should be glossy prints of good contrast, suitable for reproduction by lithography. Masking instructions or lettering arrows, etc. can be indicated on an overlay, if necessary, for inclusion by the publisher's artists or added directly to figure using transfers. A good paper is enhanced by an aesthetic layout of illustrations. Authors may design their own pages by arranging the illustrations in an area 16.5 ¡Á 21.5cm leaving adequate space for captions. Illustrations may be trimmed to column width (8 cm). Each unmounted set should be submitted in a labelled envelope, accompanied by the suggested layout. Authors are asked to take note of the general layout of the journal. It is acceptable to submit full size glossy photographic reproductions of mounted illustrations for review purposes provided that unmounted top-quality illustrations are also provided for publication. Please indicate this in a cover letter and label pictures accordingly. Line diagrams should be reproduced in black, on tracing paper or thick white paper. Text figures and photographic illustrations should be numbered seriatim. Legends should be typed separately and appended to the end of the manuscript. Authors are encouraged, where possible, to submit electronic copies of artwork. Line artwork can be supplied as an EPS figure or embedded in a word processor document. Bitmapped (photographic images) should be supplied as TIFF files. Further details about electronic submission can be found at www.blacksci.co.uk/elecmed/digill.htm.

Colour

It is the policy of NAN for authors to pay the full cost for the reproduction of their colour artwork.

Therefore, please note that if there is colour artwork in your manuscript when it is accepted for publication, Blackwell Publishing require you to complete and return a colour work agreement form before your paper can be published. This form can be downloaded as a PDF* from the internet. The web address for the form is: http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW.pdf

If you are a member of the British Neuropathological Society you will be eligible for a 50% discount in the price of colour work. If you are a member, you need to fill out an alternative form available from : http://www.blackwellpublishing.com/pdf/Sub3000_X_CoW_D.pdf

If you are unable to access the internet, or are unable to download the form, please contact Production editor at:

Revisions

If a manuscript is returned for revision, the revised manuscript must be returned to the Editorial Office within three (3) months of the date it was returned to the authors: otherwise, it will be treated as a new submission.

Following final approval of articles authors are asked to submit the accepted version on disk. These should be IBM compatible. An accurate hard copy must accompany each disk, together with details of the type of computer used, the software, and the disk system if known. Do not justify. Particular attention should be taken to ensure that any articles submitted in the form adhere exactly to the Journal style in all respects. Disks will not be returned to authors.

Proofs

PDF proofs will be sent to the author's e-mail address on the title page and should be returned within 3 days. The e-mail server must be able to accept attachments up to 4 MB in size. Acrobat Reader will be required in order to read this file. This software can be downloaded (free of charge) from the following Web site:

www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

This will enable the file to be opened, read on screen, and printed out in order for any corrections to be added. Further instructions will be sent with the proof. Proofs will be posted if no e-mail address is available; in your absence, please arrange for a colleague to access your e-mail to retrieve the proofs. Alterations in the text, other than corrections, will be charged to the authors.

A form which transfers copyright to Blackwell Science will be sent to the corresponding author on acceptance of a manuscript for publication and this must be returned to the Editorial Office, signed on behalf of all authors, prior to publication. The Copyright Assignment Form can also be found on the web site.

One copy of all manuscripts submitted to the Journal, regardless of the final editorial decision, will be kept on file in the Editorial Office for six months, after which time it will be destroyed. Copies of manuscripts will not normally be returned to authors. Copies of original illustrations will usually be returned to authors when a paper is not accepted for publication.

Twenty-five offprints of each paper will be provided free of charge and additional copies may be ordered when proofs are returned. A scale of charges will be sent with the proofs.

The Journal does not have page or handling charges.

The Editorial Board cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to manuscripts or illustrations sent to them.
